View Full Version : Best character in Super Smash Bros Brawl

I felt my Best character in Super Smash Bros. Melee thread needed a sequel, considering Brawl is about to release and the last thread had more posts than all of the rest of the gamecube section combined, and probably had more first time user posts than any other thread at VGR.
So, anyone bold enough to make predictions on the upcoming best character? I have a feeling that with all the characters there's probably not going to be any that are clearly above the rest, hell, i doubt there will even be two that are clearly above the rest (like star fox and sheik were in melee)
I really can't wait for this game to come out, and finally with some online play! There will defiantly be some VGR SSBB tournaments going on, dammit if only melee was online!
I have a feeling this new SSB is going to be even more hectic with less skill required than the first one. Even though I am excited as hell about the new one it would still be freaking sweet to play the first two online, if only to end age-old arguments :p
It's still up in the air as to whether or not all the characters from the first two super smash bros. will even be in Brawl. I sure hope they all are, I can't imagine why they would be excluded...unless of course they did it too make sure that the game was balanced...
I noticed they have Ike from Fire Emblem in Brawl...I wonder how they would differentiate him from Roy and Marth?
Who all is buying this game? I don't even have a Wii, but I might just get one for this game!
Im going to be in Japan for a month when this game releases, so im not going to buy a wii or this game until sometime when I get back in 2008.

I've always been a Marth man, so I'm gonna stick with him. Snake is going to be a beast simply because, well, he's Snake.

Do we even have a complete character list yet? You should post a list of the known characters in the upcoming game.
I don't know how we could discuss at this point which one is best, but its a good idea to get this thread rolling, because like you said, the SSBM thread is the longest running thread at this site; the Bargain Hunters thread in genreal discussion being the other one.
One thing that's discussable at this point, though, is which of the new characters we're most looking forward to.
Of the new characters I've heard of, Zero Suit Samus is probably the one I'm most excited about.

I thought Marth was gone and being replaced by a different Fire Emblem character. Someone needs to post a complete list of the known characters in SSBB.
Damn. I'm getting pretty stoked about this game. Doesn't it include a complete single player campaign component too? I really haven't read too much about the game because its one I know I'm buying without question. I guess I'd kinda like to know what all they added to this game content-wise.

I believe they are replacing him with "Ike" from Fire Emblem "Path of Radiance"

SONIC - a possibility, but who really knows
A lot of the characters that are in the "possible" list may not return because a lot of them are clone characters, but who knows?
I'd really like to see at least two fire emblem characters in the game, because I thought the duels between marth and roy were always fun.
I can't imagine them not including Ness, Mr. Game and Watch, Captain Falcon, Sheik, or Falco, since the first three are not clones and without sheik zelda would just be boring. Falco may be a clone, but I think he is such a popular character that they will add him.
Oh yeah, and that pokemon trainer character doesn't really fight, you control three of the pokemon he uses, which are Squirtle, Ivysaur, and Charizard
The only character that really is a mystery to me is "Pit" from Kid Icarus. I never really played this game, so what is this kid going to be all about? What weapons does he use, what does he do?

I only got up to the second level in Kid Ikarus when I was playing it on my PSp, and it kicked my ass so bad that I quit playing it. As far as I know, he shoots arrows.
And is Ganondorf a clone character? That's a bummer if they don't include him.
And like illest, my character will end up being Snake. Or Sonic. I'm a big Sonic fan, of the 16-bit era, anyways. Of course, there is Kirby. Have you seen what he looks like when he swallows Snake? He looks like John Rambo!
I don't think Snake is part of Save the Forest, fellas.

I wasn't planning on buying a wii......
But can you imagine the "best character" thread if SSB is online?
I'll still stick with Samus, Donkey Kong and Link.
As long as I can beat down the princesses with a big gorilla I'm happy.

No ifs anymore. It's been confirmed awhile ago that SSBB is online and ready to go.
I've never played a SSB before, so I don't know who the best character is or what really to expect beyond the fact that its a fighting game. I'm gonna be grabbing this one, though. All the hype behind the series and the online component has finally piqued my interest.

Yep, this game should be one of the biggest online fighting games ever. I can't wait to go over to my friends and play the hell out of this game, if he doesn't buy it, I will.
Maybe i'll get a chance to play it in tokyo before I make it stateside again.

Dude. What really blows me away is that despite the tons of characters, stages, weapons, fighting styles, and unlockables--which would be a deep game all unto itself--is just a small part of the package, with the tons of other gameplay modes, AND a single player 2-d sidescroller mixed with the characters fight moves (in SSBM). SSBB looks to up the ante even further.
Before Brawl comes out, pick yourself up a copy of Melee. I'm no longer a fan of the fight-game genre, but this is an exception--it is just truly one of those transcendent games. It's one of the best.
Yep, this game should be one of the biggest online fighting games ever. I don't think just one of the biggest, it will be THE biggest. There is no other game in this genre that's sold over 6 million copies in the last three generations of consoles--as far as I'm aware, SSBM is the only fight game to reach that level. And it has an IGN reader review score of 96%. And its the longest running gameplay discussion thread in VGR's history.

one[/i] of the biggest, it will be THE biggest.
I'd like to 1-up your prediction by saying my own, and that's that Brawl, if the online lobby system and matchmaking are done right, will become the most played online console game for years and years, even surpassing Halo 3(which will become the most-played online console game).
This one possibly has the right enough stuff to make it something special. But that's only if Nintendo does everything right. Online gameplay and rankings, leaderboards for all the mini-games involved, 4-player matches, new and interesting play-modes. I can't wait to see how it all turns out.

You pitch a good sale, but I think I'm gonna wait for Brawl before I get into the series. I figure that if I'm gonna give it a try, I might as well wait for the latest and greatest to do so.

Nintendo announced that Sonic will be playable in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, however the release date in Japan has been pushed back to January 24, 2008, for 6800 yen; and a new US release date is currently undetermined.
Damn release dates! This WAS the holiday game to buy!

These guys have had it in for each other since the Snes-Genesis days! People have been wanting this match up for a decade! My bet is on sonic, unless mario has some new crazy mario galaxy powers under his sleeve!

The game is out in America... but I live in Europe. IM DYING HERE. Anyway is fox still the best? From the videos I watched, pikachu seems very good too.

Pikachu is much improved. One of my friends mained Falco in Melee, but he's kicking ass with Pikachu. My other friend who mained Fox is now playing around with Olimar and winning most matches (although he still rapes with Fox). As far as me, I mained Marth in Melee, and he is MUCH better in Brawl, but I'm trying to play with Snake since I just love MGS so much and Snake is so cool.
Falco is a lot better too, and Lucas is pretty tight also. According to my friend Pit is really cheap, but I can't win when I play with him...I guess he's not my style.
When's the game coming out in Europe?

So far, I've gone through the game with Zelda/Shiek. I'm going to use Ike, maybe Samus, and Bowser. I think most of the characters I want to use are locked.

Played a lot of Brawl today. Fox is definitely nerfed. My friend who use to main Fox doesn't use him anymore, since I can beat him pretty handily now. He's transferred to Olimar, who's surprisingly good. Pit is just freaking cheap, I can't handle him. I really own sh** with Snake though, the guy is insane. It's freaking impossible to kill the guy, he hits like a Mack truck, and he can make the level into an obstacle course with his mines and C4. It's so satisfying having Sonic down-A into a mine and fly into oblivion. Snake is awesome. :D But everyone knows that already.

Nerfed? No comprende.
What happened to the side scroller game, like the one that was in SSB Melee? I thought this Space whatever was it, but so far, it doesn't appear that way.
ilnadmy
03-22-2008, 01:40 PM
Nerfed --> toned down. Fox's aerial game has been toned back, and he's no longer as powerful as he was in Melee.
Subspace Emissary is the sidescroller game here. It's basically a story mode, but I haven't played much of it. The little I did play seemed kind of fun, but not really why I play Brawl hehe. The best parts are the small cutscenes you get before and after every level. It's like pure Nintendo fan service.

03-23-2008, 06:50 AM
Oh, ok. So far, I've been doing matches. I thought the side scroller was the best part of Melee (for some reason, I didn't like that game at all. Then again, my gaming interests and expectations have changed quite a bit from when SSBM was released). I could still play Brawl w/o the side scroller, but the overall game would be less appealing to me w/o it.

Brawl is only really fun if you have people to play with. I have three other friends who play Brawl religiously, and basically every time we get together we end up playing Brawl. So that's why it's so fun. I haven't tried taking it online since it's my friend's Wii, but we're going to be roommates next year, so I'll probably get a lot of experience with online Brawl. Playing against the CPU just doesn't compare - the amount of insanity and pure chaos that results in a 4-player FFA battle with Smash Balls and Assist Trophies just doesn't compare to the monotony of fighting against computer opponents.

I disagree. The action is going to be frantic regardless of solo or multiplayer, and at times I would rather play against the cpu if people don't know how to play the game (You know the ones who always ask how did you do this, that, or whatever instead of actually playing the game).
I went through the game with Ike. Not a bad character to use. I need more characters to use, though. I want Snake and Ganondorf (sp?), but they haven't beeb unlocked just yet.

Honestly, im a little disappointed with the pacing in this game. Melee just seemed to have it perfected, now it just doesn't feel quite right. Theres also something strangely annoying about the character models.
I also can't really make up my mind about whether the graphics actually improved or got worse, but im leaning towards worse.
I agree that fox was nerfed, but don't be surprised if he still remains a top-tier character. Speed almost always dictates the best characters (example- every other fighting game ever made) and fox still may be the fastest...but who knows.
honestly im not really feeling the "next-gen" step of this game. Neither the controls or graphics or functionality really make it next-gen (i mean come on we all know that in reality Melee should have been online last gen-anyways, so ****ty online doesn't make up at all for that this gen)
anyways, what would you all rate the game? so far I think I would give it a 8.5/10.

Just play 15 vs matches on Shadow Moses Island, you'll unlock Snake. You can even play against the CPU if you want.
My friend who used to main Fox in Melee has switched to Pit. Damn that fairy is annoying. He's fast, has those stupid spammable arrows, and is just a nuisance to play against. The thing with Snake is his attacks are slow, so playing against fast characters is hard. I guess you're right - the faster the character, the better he'll be in the hands of a pro.

The graphics are improved. I've used the photo mode a lot to stop and look at things, and there are places where the textures are much less muddy than pretty much any GC game I can think of. . . almost next-gen looking, and places where the backgrounds display very little to no jaggie-ness (the same can't be said of the characters). But even the characters animation looks quite good. STILL, when you look at how much better later games on systems look, and consider that SSBM came out like 6 years ago, SSBB doesn't indicate to me that the hardware is responsible for graphical improvements. I think it would look about the same if it were a GC game, which to me it is because I play it with the wavebird controller.
I like the campaign mode, The Subspace Emissary. Overall, I'd still call the game a 9; there's just so much content, it's fun, polished, and I love all the collectible stuff. There's over 250 pieces of music, the stickers, the trophies. . . tons of characters and levels.
The levels blow me away. Especially love the Pikmin level (big shock, eh?)
The online, as I've experienced so far, SUCKS. Bad jerky lag, which I haven't experienced on Ps3 games using the same wi-fi router. But, even if there were no lag, its so bare bones generic, it doesn't even show you the players NAME. With no leaderboard, no way to add strangers to your friends list if you enjoyed playing them, no voice chat option. . .I mean, it FEELS like you are just playing the computer, but with lag.
Overall, though, great game.

Ok I've got the game, but now the thread seems to be stuck.
For me, the best character is Marth. He is fast, he has range, he has power, he has priority, he has a sword. And now that his side b is actually useable, he just owns.
My main in Melee was Pikachu, and I found him a little better this time. Thunder seems to be buffed, and he is just more... useful now for some reason.
Other Good Characters
Toon Link is good because he is fast (faster than Link at least), and has endless projectiles.
Meta Knight his pretty good, his attacks are incredibly fast, and having specials which all help in recovery, he has one of the best recoveries in the game.
Olimar is also very good. His smashes are perfect, his areals are good, he has range, and can rack up damage in no time.
