I bought a generic webcam from ebay, but it's not working so well. I have 4 computers in my house and the webcam works on all of them, except my piii 500. It will restart the computer from time to time. I didn't use any 3rd party software because WinXP recognized it and the webcam didn't come with any software at all either.

I have tried to find a solution to this situation. People have been telling me theories online. Some say that I need to put the software that runs the webcame on a different partition. Some say it was lack of Ram that caused it. (that piii has 384 SDRam). I don't think these are the causes but I really don't know any better on this particular issue.

Does any of you know? Please let me know. Thanks.

Edit: crap, sorry about that...just reread your post and realised that you had tried it on different comps.

Okay, first off the simple stuff. Stuff you've probably already done but it's good to ask anyway in case you haven't.

Is the webcam USB? If it is have you tried switching ports to see if it works in another one? Do you have any other hardware hooked up through a USB port? Like a mouse or keyboard or anything else like that? And lastly..have you tried updating your USB drivers?

Also, if it's a fairly new webcam then it might be USB2.0 compliant. Since you're running it on a PIII500 it'll probably just have 1.0 ports, if I knew more about your other comps..like how old they are and stuff...I'd be able to help you out there more.

And have you gone into your device manager to see if Windows properly detected it?

Yeah..I know I sound like an instruction manual right now..but when comps crap out it's usually cuz of something simple that you've overlooked. You do have more than enough ram for it, the average nowadays is still 256 meg so you're good there...and having the drivers installed on a different partition won't do anything for you.

That computer is old. I bought itt when piii 500 was first introduced so that was like 3 or 4 years ago. I checked almost everything. Eve the USB version, they are all normal. Don't knnow what the problem is and it bugs the heck outta me.

Thanks for the help though, I think I will just re-install windows tonight...

What is the brand of the webcam? You should be able to go online and download any drivers or software needed from the manufacturer. The memory was a joke...you have plenty.
