Yo guys, I just yesterday finally did the hook up with my PSP and the PS3 and let me tell you its a very interesting little feature. Basically your PS3 sets itself up as server and your PSP connects to it. This can be done through two ways. Through a direct connection of your PSP and PS3 through the wifi, or if your PS3 is connected to the internet you can connect your PSP to the internet and connect that way. The latter option I'm assuming you to connect to your PS3 with your PSP from anywhere in the world that has internet, but I'm not exactly sure about it. I've heard no issues with PS3's but I'm not about to take chances.
Now to meat of the feature. Basically when you do the remote play mode your PSP becomes the PS3. The video feed that is on your tv goes to your PSP screen and you basically control the PS3 functions from your PSP. Now the "play" in remote play is a bit decieving since you can't actually play any PS3 games on PSP (obviously the control schemes on the machines are a bit different). However I'm not sure if the same will apply for PS1 games, but it probably will as the control assignment will be different for PSP versions. You can basically access everything else though. Movies and music that you have saved on your harddrive on your PS3 you can watch or listen too on your PSP. You can even scroll through the games you have on your harddrive. You can't watch DVD, BD, or a listen to a CD from it. It only allows access to things saved on the hard drive.
The best thing I like about this feature is that I can be watching TV or be upstairs on my PC and still be using my PSP to control what the PS3 is doing. A great example of this is right now I'm on VGR writing this upstairs on my PC. Since I have my PSP next to me I can still control what the PS3 is downloading (currently downloading Heavenly Sword demo) and then when the demo is downloaded I can have it installed on the PS3 by using my PSP so when I'm done with my business upstairs the Heavenly Sword demo will be downloaded and installed and ready for me to play. You can also use PS Store. So if I'm downstairs I can be watching TV and using my PSP to determine the downloads or purchases I want to make from the store without having to take up the TV screen. I can also see what friends are on. Right now Folken is online playing Ninja Gaiden and Tashi is online just doing whatever I guess. So in that regard it's also nice so if I see someone come online from my PSP I can ask them is they want to game and then go game on my PS3 with them.
So this feature in a nutshell allows your PS3 interface to be mobile and updated without you personally being there with your PS3. Great feature, but it can still be improved. I know playing PS3 games on your PSP is a bit much to ask, but damn that'd be cool.
