Nintendo has released an announcement today in regards to their Virtual Console lineup, stating that the next update on Monday, June 4th will include the 100th game to be released for the Wii's retro game distribution system. The honor of the 100th game distinction goes to none other than the original NES title Zelda II - The Adventure of Link, the fourth Zelda title to be released on the Virtual Console so far.

According to Nintendo's statistics, more than 4.7 million VC games have so far been downloaded on the Wii since the service opened for business on November 19th, 2006. The vast number represents a rate of more than 1000 games per hour since the console's launch last year.

The company also has a list of the five most popular VC titles, which are, in order:

1) Super Mario Bros. (NES)

2) Super Mario 64 (N64)

3) Mario Kart 64 (N64)

4) Super Mario World (SNES)

5) The Legend of Zelda (NES)

Nintendo has not yet announced the other titles that will accompany the release of Zelda II, but will make an official announcement prior to the Virtual Console update, which is scheduled to go up on 9 AM PST next Monday.Kicking ass and taking names!

Of those "Top 5 VC Titles" you listed I only got Super Mario World (SNES). I hadn't played that one since back when I first bought my SNES.

I'm surprised to see the original Legend of Zeld on NES outsold Link to the Past (SNES)--I downloaded that like a chump (I already have it on a GBA cartridge.)

BUT. . . this week, FINALLY. Square finally released ACT RAISER. And it lives up to the nostalgia. The music, the bosses, the whole weird combo of God Sim/ Side Scrolling Platformer. This game's a cult classic for a reason. GET IT.

Wii Shop Channel is cool; if only they would add a game demo channel and an outlet for new titles where devs could really play with concepts on the Wii and make some fun low price grooviness for us. I think all this will happen.

The Wii is just getting started.

Dude, a game demo channel would be awesome!

Here's a question. Would it be possible to create something where people could stream games to play? I mean, one of Nintendo's faults is that there isn't enough memory to hold much on the Wii as far as demos and vids, and memory cards are pretty much limited to backing up save files. Would they make it like a pay-as-you-play type deal, charging you a monthly fee or something.

Games I loved and would like to play again include:

NES

Guardian Legend Si-fi action-rpg with cool dungeon crawling and bosses. One of the old Broderbund classics.

Legacy of the Wizard Another great old Broderbund game. You play a whole family, each with their own special strengths and abilities, unloking areas in this action-rpg.

Magic of Scheherazade One of my all-time favorite console rpg's, from the incredibly creative and talented Culture Brain.

Baseball Simulator 1.000 Another great game by Culture Brain, an incredibly fun baseball game that includes the Ultra League, where players have super powers. Anyone who has ever played Backyard Baseball will immediately recognize that Backyard Baseball basically stole heavily from this game.

SNES

Tecmo Super Bowl The most fun arcade football game I've ever played. The fully sortabel individual and team stats make this game a blast. Full season and playoffs.

Super Baseball Simulator 1.000 It's Baseball Simulator 1.000 on steroids. You get full editing off all your players. Back in the old days, I would create customer teams with players that could steal from first to home, or knock one out of the park on a check swing. This game is a total kick.

Secret of Mana Party-based rpg that is one of my all-time favorites..

Jurrasic Park This is probably one of the more overlooked and underappreciated games ever made. At a time when most console games were being dumbed down for the masses, the same old fighting games and platform jumpers over and over, along comes a console game that in a lot of ways was a prelude to pc games. Full of innovative ideas, Jurrasic Park incorporated action, rpg, and adventure elements into one seamless game. And get this - it had 3D! Rudimentary, yes. But in addition to the 2D outdoor action, indoors you were in 3D mode and had to solve objectives like you would in later first person games for the pc. The other thing that made this game great, amazingly, is that there was no save feature. You played it in one sitting. This made the game incredibly immersive, as you basically had to find your way off the island in real time. And unlike console games for its time - the game was non-linear. You could achieve many objectives in the order of your choosing. Great game.
