View Full Version : Re: Kill.switch
Ok guys, show a little patience if you discussed this one earlier.
[not evident in existing threads]
Kill.switch. tactical military shooter, if its old news, then you likely have something to say about it [either way, good or bad].
If its new, whats your take on its success?
I like seeing these types of games for consoles [you PC "only" guys relax, Ive heard you loud 'n clear about console shooters, lol].
Hopefully more will be successfully implemented.

I've only played the demo, so my impressions are from that. Some interesting elements, but as a third-person shooter it's a fairly awkward beast. Part of the strategy involved is using cover and blind firing, but in this case you can target without exposing yourself. Problem is, you have to align yourself properly with your cover, otherwise you won't be able to target properly. You really have to play it to see what I mean. The AI is okay, but it's still the same, hide behind cover and then jump out to fire some rounds providing you with your window of opportunity to take down said bad guy, before popping back behind cover. The AI will try to flush you out, but all they do is wind up exposing themselves. Not a bad game, but this is not a breakthrough product from the demo. You do have to move around and try to gain positional advantage. Not a bad game, but I'd have to play a lot more to render an opinion on this one.
I have a feeling that this game will likely be overlooked. On the ps2, people will be hyped by Socom2, and on the xbox Rainbow Six 3, so where killswitch is going to fit in, I don't know.

Thanks for your review of demo. I couldny agree more about how some games are "overlooked" or at least overshadowed by big name releases
[its that name recognition thing].
I keep an eye out for further offerings on Kill.switch.
A lot of games are going to get tagged and tagged hard this holiday season. When I see stuff like Tak and the power of Juju or whatever, I ask myself, why bother? Unless you're putting out a frickin' amazing game, or you're putting out a $19.99 cheapie, you're going to be dead meat when competing with the big name titles out there. Right now, any negative review on an upcoming title is what I'm looking for so I can pare down the list to manageable proportions.
Casual gamers bought the dreadful Enter the Matrix in droves, so you can expect them to buy the LOTR:Rotk heavily. No matter how crappy EA's james bond game is, it still sells. Socom was a million seller for sony, so expect Socom II to pull even bigger numbers. Jak and Daxter 2 and R&C:GC will pull in numbers. Prince of Persia should probably do well, but Beyond Good and Evil could be in trouble. The marketing on this game doesn't give a clear idea on what this game is even about. Hovercraft racing crossed with Pokemon Snap, is that the idea. Confused marketing could sink BG&E.
I think you're going to see a big shakeout this holiday season. If you're out there with a $49.99 product, it better be effin' incredible. If not you better go in low at $19.99 and hope some parents looking to save themselves some dough will pick your title up as a stocking stuffer. Even then, you're going to have a very, very hard time with so many quality titles out there at greatest hits or platinum hits pricing. For new gamers, old games for us are new for them. I saw GTA3 at Future Shop for $19.99 canadian. Man, I wouldn't my job to depend on a title doing well this holiday season.

I've just played through a couple of levels of the game. It seems like an OK action game, but I think it may get boring after a while if the gameplay remains the same throughout the game. I kind of like how the game forces you to take cover instead of just running through the level and gunning everyone down. The camera is a little annoying sometimes as you move through some of the rooms, but in the outdoor environments they seem to be OK. If I had to rate the game from what I've played so far I'd probably give it a 7.5 out of 10.

I've play through about 12 levels now and although the gameplay elements have remained the same, I still have not become bored with the game. The difficulty level has been ramped up quite a bit in the later levels and this may be what is keeping me interested. I would still score the game a 7.5 because technically its not very impressive, but few games can keep me interested for this long. I kind of wish some of these gameplay mechanics were included in Splinter Cell. Could've made the game much more fun.

I finally got a chance to play a demo of this game (PS2 version though). It was pretty interesting. I'm not sure how this game will do, but more than likely, I will be picking up the full version when it drops in price in 2004.
