do you think it will be an easy download later? just wondering if i should just get a PS3 as a do "everything" or not. BTW i have a PS2 with several games, also making the PS3 a worthwhile consideration. is it worth getting a PS3 to watch standard dvd's or should i get an upscaling dvd player cuz this won't happen anytime soon.

The goal Sony is trying to accomplish with PS3 is to replace dvd with blu-ray. So, i think it's unlikely that you'll see any update in that regard.
wouldn't getting something like this http://www.compumusic.com/p38897.htm makes the matter simpler?

It doesn't upscale DVD's yet but it is a feature that is supposedly on the way:

You can get a good upscaling DVD player these days for like $80. I'd go that route.
