My friend just dropped by yesterday with copies (legitimate copies ) of the above two games, and we installed them both on my PC to check them out with full graphics. C&C3 was amazing, pure and simple. After months of me disregarding it because it's "not a Westwood game," I think I'm just going to shut my mouth and play it quietly. Finished the first two GDI missions, and am going to try to finish the campaign within the next few weeks.

STALKER was next, and after installing and doing all the set-up options I have to say it was...meh. Really, it was pretty normal. I mean yeah it was atmospheric, and I don't think I've played any games like it, but I don't think I'll be playing much of it any time soon. Nothing about it jumps out at you and surprises/interests you and so it's just normal so far.

Anyway, I'll play some more C&C3 and let you guys know what it's like, but for anyone who enjoys RTS games this is a game to get. It's been a while since I've played any RTS games though, so I have to get back into the hotkey mode and the whole "ASDF does NOT move the camera around, so stop confusing your troops with attack/stop commands!"

You have alot of praise for C&C3 but is it better than Company of Heroes!? COH if probably the best RTS Ive ever played

I'll be honest, I haven't played much COH. Once I really got into the game my laptop broke down (%$#@!$ ^&%*#$ @$$%&%@!) so I haven't gotten around to playing any more of it. COH seems to have a more methodical feel to it which I absolutely loved, but I didn't get to play any multiplayer so I'm not going to comment on it. With C&C3 I played around 5 of the GDI missions (around half of the campaign really...don't expect it to last you long, although there are three campaigns) and it's just a really fast game. I mean the last mission I played was me micromanaging units on three fronts, switching harvesters between two different tiberium deposits, and pumping out units while my attack force is getting whittled down. It's a more traditional RTS in the sense of build base --> scout around --> climb up tech tree --> pump out heavy hitters --> profit.

HOWEVER, having said that, don't expect your battles to be anything more than a send-all-your-units-in-at-once kinda thing. It's not like in COH where positioning is everything, it's just an all-out brawl. I'll probably get back into COH once I go back to the US and my Alienware gets fixed, but until then C&C3 is pretty sweet. I actually logged off WoW to play C&C3! Is this the start of a new addiction? Who knows...

Just tried playing STALKER, and damn that first mission is HARD! I can't kill a single person! I've got a pea shooter that does diddly squat for damage and all my friends die. Then you get 5 people with shotguns taking aim at my face. That's just ridiculous.

STALKER is hard as hell for your first 3 guns. Once you get one with better accuracy, it becomes alot more forgiving.

Played some more C&C3, finished mission number 6. It's a timed mission, and the timer can be reset by destroying a certain structure (which they will eventually rebuild and the timer will start again). Pretty damn hectic I must say. Unfortunately, defending your base is as simple as placing a few turrets and station some units near them. The AI always attacks from the same direction, so defense is ridiculously easy.

The units are pretty impressive though, and if you have a top-of-the-line rig then you're going to want to turn all the graphics settings up because this one is a beauty. Explosions, plasma beams, sonic emitters, all these things look absolutely sublime and you're going to want to experience them all.

I beat all three campaigns on C&C3 a few weeks ago, I love it. I was a huge fan of the original one (I beat the campaigns on that too) so naturally I had to pick up the new one, regardless that its EA.

What do you think of the cutscenes? I thought they were hilarous, I loved the cutscenes in the original, and wouldn't have it any other way. I actually enjoy reading the intelligence information also.

Yeah I loved the cutscenes, and the intelligence information was also pretty sweet. For once I can say I'm glad EA picked up the rights to this game. Bravo EA, you did good.

Although I gotta say, from what I've seen so far, there isn't really much depth in the gameplay. I mean it's more of a speed contest to see who can pump out the most units fastest rather than actually depending on strategy and such.

Agreed. It seems to me like there isn't really a good defensive way to play the game in multiplayer, I mean, even obelisks aren't as powerful as they used to be, and nothing can hold off a wave of mammoths. Not only that, but superweapons can be attained so quickly, the powers seem a little too useful, and building a base takes no time at all. I'm looking forward to some custom maps, because I think some bottlenecks might at least add some defensibility to the game, like back in dark reign 2.

There was this awesome map in Generals that had basically three land bridges between the two sides, and that was the only way to get across to the opponent. It was a bottleneck massacre, as all you had to do was place a bunch of turrets and tanks near the ends of the bridges to defend yourself. I think there was a way to go around the side of the map, but that took too long. It was pretty fun.

But yeah I agree, it's hard to turtle up in this game as you WILL get yourself destroyed. You have to play offensively, which is not something I'm used to.

%&#! THE GDI CROATIA LEVEL!!!

Whoever made that mission needs to be kicked in the balls. What a douchebag.

Update: Finished the Croatia mission and the one after it (Albania I believe). After getting over the ridiculous hump that is Croatia, the missions seem to go back to being quite fun. Hopefully there's nothing similar waiting for me later in the game, because it's a helluva lot of fun.

Had my ass handed to me in Stalker as well using those crappy pistols , even the shotgun and the AKSU. It only really opened up once I got an AK74. Nowadays I walk around with impunity toting what looks like an FN-FAL. I also got this weird gun that looks like a grenade launcher but modded to use AK74 bullets, it's awesome but starting to break apart.

Anyway I'll skip on CC3 for now I'm not too much into RTS and if it's just an all-out brawl surely it'll feel like Warcraft 3, which I didn't like either. I want something with more depth in the combat like Age of Mythology.

It's actually not like Warcraft 3 so much since Warcraft involved more (Bane close your eyes here) strategy and micromanagement. C&C3 is just more of a "build a huge army and send them at the enemy" kind of game, but it never tries to be anything more and for that reason it's pretty fun. I still long for Warcraft 3 and might end up installing it somewhere down the line, but C&C3 is very fun for now.

LOL I wasn't trying to say that WarCraft 3 is very deep (although I think it is), I'm just saying it has more depth than C&C3, so if you were looking for a particularly deep game in C&C3 and you weren't impressed by WC3 then look elsewhere.
