View Full Version : I thought 1080p didn't matter for 360 gaming?

This isn't a wack at the 360, more of a compliment. I was at my local Worst Buy picking up some monster cleaner for my big screen TV and decided to look at the video game selection. I was suprised looking at the back of the 360 games, there are numerous new titles that are 1080p. That's awsome, and it will probably be a trend seeing more 1080p native games with the elite coming out.

Now, here is my gripe. I was looking at the PS3 games available for my system and most games are only 720p and then a select few that are 1080p. This is odd because the PS3 is supposed to be the system pushing 1080p and the 360 was the system that didn't care and said 1080i was good enough... But why the heck are there more 1080p games for the 360 then?

It is good to see the elite coming out. I'm still not clear whether it will have wifi built in but I do remember reading it would. The only thing it is missing is the next gen optical drive. I bought the PS3 for games and because I like High Def movies but lately due to time constraints I don't watch many movies. Also when a movie comes out it may not be in your prefered format. So it would seem the prefered format would be upscaled DVD. I am curious whether the elite will upscale over HDMI.

Ehh, upscale over HDMI 1080i? What's over that, actually being IN the movie or game? 1080p above 1080i?..never was too clear on that.

It is rather ironic about how the game resolution formats have come full circle, obviously it is yet another example of MS firing on all cylinders and giving the public what it wants and needs. It's hard to take Sony seriously with statements like "Next gen starts when WE say it does" and then throws RCA jacks in the box ONLY....come on. I paid 60 bones for that HDMI cable that I still don't use yet.

The only way I'd be interested in the Elite360 is if it had a HD-DVD drive in it, and I hear it does not, still gotta buy the 200 bones godforbiding HD-DVD add-on...is this right? If the drive was 100 bones then maybe.

Sony=Assinine, Egosentric, arrogant and assumption making...a lot like how I used to think of Microsoft but now don't...then again, Vista just came out and a driver hunt is not something I want eating up my nights and weekends.

The current XBOX 360 (the non elite) upscales DVD movies to 1080i if you use a VGA connection. I'm therefore assuming the Elite model will do the same over HDMI.

Wifi is not built into the elite 360. It's still a separate $99 to get a wireless connection.

Actually the VGA will upscale all the way to 1080p as long as your TV accepts 1080p over VGA.

Wifi not being built in is a big deal to me. Both my PS3 and Wii have this feature, why wouldn't the "elite" have this? If it is so "elite" maybe MS should take a step back and look at what they are putting on the shelves. I was actually considdering buying one but I'm not going to pay $99 for an external wifi adapter, that is just absolute BS.

It is good that MS answers when the customers want more but then they come to the table with the double speak. Here you go, bigger HDD, HDMI, you are now the "elite"... Wifi? Wifi? Wifi? Whats that, ethernet cable with it? This sucks. They should just tell the customers outright that you are paying more effectively for a 360 than a PS3. Geez, as much as the PS3's line up is lacking, at least the system is a good value for it's price.

I got my HDMI cable for only $35 at Wal-Mart. Yeah, Wal-Mart. I usually pop in there once a year, so getting that cable was my '07 journey.

It seems to me, that nothing matters to M$ when they don't have it. Everything does when they do. Sony was ridiculed when they decided to include the wireless motion sensoring controller to the PS3s. Guess who is considering doing the same now? M$. PS3 was too expensive and HDMI was unnecessary. Guess who's copying that now? Again, M$. btw, it's the crappier 1.2. What is even funnier is that M$ has been laughing at Nintendo's Wii and Wiimote for quite a while now. All what Xbots have been laughing for months now are all coming to 360 as well. PS3 was too expensive but M$'s elite isn't. At least, blu-ray is a piece of brand new technology. What is new with 120 GB hdd? Sure, Xbots now are all saying how they don't want an elite. Chances are, they all are going to end up with one later. Xbox was crap and they all ended up with the sequel. It's like they have a taste for sh1t. In the end, they are just a bunch hypocrites and will like anything M$ gives them. Xbots surely are a bunch weird monkeys. I can't understand why they would settle with paid online service that literally have been don for years for free. Then pay for HD content movies when it'd be probably cheaper getting the same movies in HDDVD via netflix. I've already given up on trying to understand them. It probably takes one guy with the M$ tattooed on his a@@ in order to understand another. Good grief.

Same here. I got my hdmi to dvi cable for 4.99 from monoprice.com too. People really need to do some research before they buy stuff.

Research all you want, I prefer to get my stuff in-store anyway. And my cable isn't HDMI to DVI, it's HDMI to HDMI. If it had cost the same as the other cable at your monoprice, so what? I would have still walked into a local store and got what I wanted.

Yes, some shoppers still prefer purchasing in store to have it right then and there, but the cheapest HDMI cable I found in stores was from Psyclone and was like $35... I got the same thing from monoprice.com for about $6... If paying an extra $30 is worth the convienence, they great for you, but if you are a smart shopper then check out monoprice.com.

Like I've said before, an HDMI cable is an HDMI cable, it transmits a digital signal. There's no difference in PQ if you buy one for 4.99 or 59.99, the only point of consideration is the length of such cables.

As it relates to MS offering more games in true 1080P rez, that is certainly not so. PS3 does have more games in 1080P over MS atm, and it's only going to lengthen it's lead in that realm. A point to note though, is that all 360 games can be upscaled via VGA to 1080P rez, that does not make these games 1080P native. The only 1080P native game on the 360 so far is VT3, (and I trust that Sega cut no corners as was done in COD3 on the 360), besides, the point is, the number of native 1080P games on the PS3 just dwarfs what's available on the 360.

RR7,VT3,NBA07,Marvel_UA,VF5,Full Auto 2 are just some of the current 1080P efforts on the PS3, and with some of the more ambitious titles coming up like Lair, it will get much more difficult for the 360 to compare at that rez, sure Sega might have been able to get the multiplat VT3 at 1080P, but then VT3 is hardly pushing any of these systems, though sharpness, colors and cloth detail are superior on the PS3 version.

Thing is, in a recent interview with gamepro, the criterion developers have said that 1080p just can't be done on the next gen version of burnout on the 360, but with the PS3 it's pretty much a forgone conclusion. I'm looking at some of the 1080P games upcoming and some which I won't mention till word is more official, these games are just so complex and full of detail. I think it will be very hard for the 360 to compete at 720P in the future, farless at 1080P, when most, if not all the major Sony heavy hitters will be hitting store shelves at 1080P/60fps later this year and hencetoforth.

1080p/60fps just like Motorstorm, right LastWord?

Unless I'm really close to the TV screen, I can't decipher much difference between 1080i/1080p on my television when playing videogames. Or in other words the difference between Sony's 1080p native games and 360's 1080i titles are minimal if even noticable at all at least in my opinion using my television.

More of your Sony-fanboy drivel.

"The Xbox 360 and PS3 versions are nearly identical, but the Xbox 360 version is easily the better of the two, since the PS3 version doesn't have online play."

And...

"If you're trying to decide between the PS3 and 360 versions of the game, the 360 is easily the better choice thanks to online play. "

That's from Gamespot. What's more baffling is the PS3 versions lack of online. I thought the PSN Network was the shiznit LastLoad? Or is that just more of your talking out of your rear?

I actually read on one site that the PS3 version is superior in 1080p while the Xbox 360 version blows the PS3 away at 1080i and 720p. So, if you are one of the 20 or so people who own a 1080p set and plan on gaming that way, the PS3 version has a superior picture through HDMI output. Of course, this is easily rectified with the 360 Elite system since it too offers HDMI output.

But for those of us who game on the more standard 720p or 1080i modes, the Xbox 360 clearly excels and even offers online play. Something that Sony just can't seem to get right.

I don't know how the PS3 version looks, but the 360 version of MLB 2K7 looks great in 1080i.

and VF5 is only 720p by the way unless you have the Japanese version.
