Well, for a World War II Shooter, I'd look for a game with good graphics, first person (I'd only choose a third person one if it was like Hidden And Dangerous 2, where u can aim properly) and something thats addictive really. For a good online World War II shooter thats free, I'd strongly recommend Wolfenstein - Enemy Territory. You choose from 5 professions - Soldier, Medic, Mechanic, Field Ops (people that call for air strikes) and Covert Ops (stealthy people really. If an enemy dies, they can take their clothes and discuise as an enemy). The bad thing about Covert Ops is if you take an enemy uniform, some people cheat and use aim bots. Aim bots allow you to see everyone on the map, so like if I had an aim bot, and you hid behind a wall, I'd still be able to see you. The aim bot also helps you to aim (obviously), and locks onto you, so the gun follows you. So, if you were Covert Ops discuised, someone with an Aim bot would know you werent the play you were discuised as. If you wanted to get a good start on Enemy Territory, use Mechanic. Mechanics get a lot of things to do in the game, such as put up MGs and assault ramps. They also lay dynamite and land mines. In Enemy Territory, some servers have XP savers which are like up to 500xp. Some people struggle to reach this amount, and it takes them a while to save their xp, and even if they do, it only saves it to that server.
When you play the game, you start of as a private. You have skills, but they aren't perfected or done up. To get your light weapons skills up, you have to kill quite a few people with a rifle/sniper, pistol or an SMG. It can be different for a soldier though. They can carry heavy weapons, such as a flame thrower, a portable MG an a mortar. You just have to kill with those to get your heavy weapons skills up. Theres battle sence, and to get that up, I think you have to use MGs, and other equipment around you (I don't really know about this one, so if someone knows for sure, please post. I don't want to miss lead people). For mechanics, obviously, build stuff to get that skill up. Covert ops, just kill and take uniforms. Field ops, give ammo. Medic, obvious one, heal/revive people.

This is what I did.
Start off with a mechanic. Go around the map and build things. Start off by building a command post. Then, build an MG. Mount the MG and kill people with it (this gets your heavy weapons up). When it says Heavy weapons level 1, come off the MG and get your light weapons skills up by killing with your primary gun (press 3 for your primary gun). Get your light weapons up to level 3 and your mechanic up to 3. Then make a mix of the three (mechanic, heavy and light weapons). By the time you have got all of these up to level 4, your battle sense will be level 4. Then switch your profession to Covert Ops. Just kill and take uniforms for this one. Then be a medic, heal and revive people. Then Field ops. Just hand out ammo. When all of this is complete, you have the highest rank (not of all the players, just of the games limits). When you have the highest rank, it's not over, you can still gain XP.
If you wish to do what I have just typed up, go to a server that has XP save forever. I did mine in a server called Chaotic Angels XPS. In that server you have XP save forever, but when your XP gets to 50,000, it resets, but no worries, by the time you have achieved the highest rank, you will have done about 5,000 - 8,000 xp.
