Looks kinda fun but a little repetitive.

IGN impressions from last TGS:

September 22, 2006 - Of the 27 games that were supposed to be playable at the Tokyo Game Show, one title that went previously unannounced until today was Unknown Realms (preciously Monster Kingdom). The protagonist in it is a man who is able to fight against and capture monsters to use for his own bidding, as well as a young woman who possesses the same powers.

Unknown Realms begins in a very bright and beautiful field of pink, purple and yellow flowers. It's in stark contrast from the hero of the game, who's rather dark, to the say the least. Sporting a drab, brown jacket and thin spectacles, he looks more like a librarian than a monster hunter. Either way, he's able to devour the spirits of the monsters he defeats and, in turn, can use them against other monsters. To capture a creature, players have to shake them up enough so that their spirit starts to float out of their body -- then they just need to press L1 to start the capture process. The controller's tilt mechanics come into play here as well, since once an enemy has been weakened enough tilting the controller upward captures it. If you happen to imprison the same monster more than once, you can strengthen its powers even more.

The TGS demo boasted about half a dozen monsters scattered around five areas. Some critters were very basic, such as an imp with a slash attack, but others were able to lend supporting powers. One creature we captured was a flying enemy armed with a jar of sticky fluid that immobilized anything it touched. Another monster gave us a melee attack that allowed us to hit flying enemies. Of course, there were some beasties that we couldn't capture, like the huge bull-like creature with a ramming attack, and a blob monster that used a spike strike to protect itself from opponents. The demo ended with a huge boss several times bigger than our hero, and we couldn't grab that guy either. But maybe that's a good thing, since he didn't move at all (but he did have a tornado attack that sucked up any creatures that we summoned, and a flame attack that burned everything in its path).

Visually the game looks pretty nice, with a lot of cool water and lighting effects. The textures on the end-boss were especially impressive with ooze that slid from the top of its head down its back. Plus, all of our character's attacks were actually reflected off of the monster's sheen. Sadly, the camera did have some issues and zoomed in too close to the character because of the small environments. However, the most disappointing aspect of the game was the lack of freedom. In several parts, there were ledges and such which looked accessible but weren't. In most cases, you had to go around a small rock to gain access rather than simple walking over to it.

Despite having a rather large presence at TGS, Unknown Realms didn't seem to get a lot of attention because it was surrounded by Devil May Cry 4, Minna No Golf 5 and Heavenly Sword. A premonition or a big mistake? Time will tell.

It's from the same guy who fathered the Shin Megami Tensei series apparently.

It looks like something I would definitely pick up. Let's just hope that it'll come out here. Either that or I master Japanese by the time it comes out.

It should come out here. Seems intriguing enough and its demo was playable at last year's TGS.

I sincerely hope so. Maybe something about it will be revealed at this year's E3.

The US release date is October. It should be out in Japan in June. If it has english subtitles and language support, I'll import it.

That's good to know. I feared that this would turn out to be one of those games that get canned eventually.

I wouldn't import it if the overall cost is more than the US version. I really hope this game comes with decent voice acting and bilingual tracks. That'd be awesome
