"Oh, Sony, Sony where art thou? Europe apparently doesn’t want Sony’s expensive PlayStation 3, with the French organizers describing the Paris launch of the PS3 a “non-event”.

As expected, Sony fans here in Europe turned out to be not so “true-blue” to their favorite brand, some of them starting to bash Sony for its “infatuation” and for the high price established in the PAL areas for the PS3.

Although they are receiving the PlayStation 3 six months later than the Americans or the Japanese, European gamers get a more expensive and less powerful console (with reduced backwards compatibility).

If Americans are (still) able to buy a high-end PS3 for $599 and the Japanese gamers can even acquire it for ¥49,980 (US$412)- the low-end version- Europeans have to pay for it € 599 (US $779) or £425 (US $840) respectively, while Australians and New Zealanders will pay at least A$1,000 (US $785) or NZ $1,200 (US $839) in their respective markets (I have seen a New Zealander who said he paid NZ $1500). By comparison, PlayStation 3 with the 60 GB hard drive costs ¥59,980 (US$494) in Japan…

The cheaper version, which is available in Japan and the U.S. for ¥49,980 (US$412) and US$500, respectively, won’t be offered in PAL countries due to "retailer and customer demand," according to SCEI.

Apparently Sony had everything prepared for a massive and impressive debut of the PS3 on the French market, but company officials’ worst expectations came true: the failure was “sounding”.

Yesterday, in the evening before the launch (March 22) more than 200 journos gathered underneath the Eiffel Tower, but soon realized something was wrong: the streets around the tower were empty, and, as the time passed by, Sony officials began to worry. A little late, I might add…

The only faithful French fans of Sony are truly amazed to find themselves alone (in the dark…). Serge, 31, tries to come up with an explanation: “It’s true that it’s expensive, but with a HD player, it’s worth it”. Frank, 19, who’s been waiting for more than 7 hours, begins to feel the regret: “I’m disappointed, there’s nobody here. I could have waited tomorrow [March 23]. Moreover, they’ve promised us animations and nothing happens”.

Next to the launch site are Kevin, 21, from Montfermeil, with his two friends Céline and Michel. Kev has been a Sony fan for 10 years and is now the happy owner of a PS1 and a PS2, but surprisingly he was pushed back by the security forces when he tried to approach PS3’s “ground zero”. “I come from the suburbs, probably my face is repelling”, he jokes.

About 40 police officers were mobilized for protection, although there was about the same number of persons gathered at the Eiffel Tower to celebrate Sony’s event. “We were told to prepare for at least 3000 persons” said one of the officers, who also declared that they were instructed to permit only those who had a means of payment to pass (cash or credit card).

Sony had previously announced the projection in HD of SCEI’s Casino Royale, the latest installment in the James Bond series, but instead the OSS 117: Le Caire nid d'espions, was projected. OSS 117 is a 2006 French film directed by Michel Hazanavicius, and is a parody of the spy film genre. The film follows the exploits of a French secret agent, OSS 117, in Cairo in 1955. It was sort of a metaphor for an evening literally deserted.

Close to 22hrs the journalists receive an SMS from the French Xbox marketing team: “the Xbox team wishes you a good evening” ("la Xbox team vous souhaite une bonne soirée"). Soon after that a small military boat flanked with “Xbox loves you” messages appears, carrying a group of Microsoft employees who defy “the enemy”. The world around them laughs but not the Sony employees.

All they wait now is probably the end of this nightmare. A FNAC responsible (the co-organizer of the event) enumerates the possible causes for this failure: “Wii’s success, bad weather, badly chosen launch date and finally the price of the console have made this evening a non-event”.

At 23hrs, a FNAC store-boat reaches at last Seine river’s shore, accompanied by a huge inflatable PS3, which is lit by an immense projector situated on the other shore. The giant screen now presents images with PS3 games, but nobody gives a damn, because of the Arctic cold outside.

Finally, midnight. Without cheers or applauses the first buyers are invited to step on the store-boat, and soon the first happy PS3 owners in France are interviewed by the crowd of journalists, who are more numerous. Only about 50 consoles were sold from the 1,000 available…

Not far away, on Champs Élysées, the FNAC store specially opened for the PS3 launch- just like other 12 stores of the group in the entire France- sees its PlayStation 3 consoles stalling on the shelves. Here, from the 1,000 consoles available, less than 300 found their owners…

I’ll keep you informed with what happens in other Euro-zones so stay tuned for more."

You know that there are concrete sales numbers from France out, don't you? Making this news item of yours from prelaunch, very dated. Here, inform yourself:

The quick translation is that PS3 sold 78,000 units compared to Wii's 75,000 and 360's 49,000 units. Across Europe, Sony moved 600,000 of the 1,000,000 consoles that they shipped.

Your fervor 78 is commendable but misplaced, you shouldn't be hating on Sony so much!

Yeah. The Sony Klingons can't take it. You're making them feel bad, don't you know. Please stop it. You're about to make them cry.

The article 78 posted was a good read, but now that I see your #'s', free of context, I realize the Ps3 is indeed kicking Wii and 360's ass!

Jimmy had 8 apples and sold all 8. Billy had 5 apples and sold all 5. Stuart had 12 apples and sold 9. ZOMG STUART SOLD THE MOST APPLES, LOLZ!!11!

I.E. If Jimmy and Billy had had more apples, they would have probably sold more than Stuart, since both Jimmy and Billy sold out of all their stock. Stuart, on the other hand, did NOT sell out all of his stock, and has apples collecting dust on the shelves of retailers everywhere.

The prize for selling 8 apples at 50 cents was a skateboard.
The prize for selling 9 apples at 2 dollars was a [Rod Roddy]brand new car.[/Rod Roddy]

The prize for retailers selling through stock = profit.

The prize for retailers with product collecting dust on shelves = lost profit.

The prize for manufacturers when product has sold through = more orders.

The prize for manufacturers when product has not sold through = no further orders until product sell-through.

And there you have to define this argument in terms of absolutes because apparently, no PS3 console will ever be sold again. Selling out is not necessarily better then selling more especially when there is at least one viable competitor out and I'm not talking about the Wii either.

PlayStation 3 sales plunge 82% in UK

After obliterating records upon its launch in the UK last week, PlayStation 3 sales have come down to Earth with all the grace of a skydiving walrus using an anvil for a parachute. Citing the latest Chart Track data, a GamesIndustry.biz report discloses that sales for Sony's system have dropped by 82% in the last week. Having sold an estimated 165,000 units before, the percentage represents a drop of 135,300 units, resulting in total sales of 29,700 systems for the week.

Previously, it was stated that the initial PS3 shipment for the UK numbered 220,000. With 55,000 units remaining after the first week and without considering any subsequent stock, it means that the PS3 sold an estimated 54% of its remaining stock. Compared to the 75% of stock sold in its initial week, it still makes for a notable 21% drop. Though the days are early yet and the PS3's overall performance in the country (and the rest of Europe) has yet to be assessed, things look to have slowed down quickly and considerably.

Let's talk again about product sell through, shall we?

Yeah but what about France. You've got no argument - the UK was so last week. And besides, that's old news. Right folkie?

Yeah but what about the 360 in East Timor.

See? I can use selective arguments too.

Um, for the record, the UK is the European territory where the PS3 is doing best, thus it relates. Also, since the UK is part of the European market it also makes this news doubly relevant.

Feel free, though, to whine. It would make about as much sense claiming that the PS3 sales in California aren't relevant to the sales in Minnesota, because, ya' know, it's not like N.American sales are counted as a whole. Oh wait.

It's a sad day when the system not only fails miserably to move all the alotted launch units, but after a week STILL can't sell out of the launch inventory. :cryin:

Thanks for the follow-up news BTW Trebor. The facts are that Sony WON'T be able to move enough units to compete with the Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii at this point. Not at that price. As if Japan wasn't getting stuck up the rear enough, American's pay more. And to top that off, Europeans get a gimped-out system and it costs MORE? Somebody needs to wake Sony up.

And I had to laugh out loud last night when I saw G4's review of Motorstorm. Basically, it's a really pretty tech demo. No multiplayer outside of online, limited tracks, limited cars, no customization....this game should have been cooking for about another 6 months before it was released. But it's pretty!

The PS3 is killing I tell you! A bunch of sloppy seconds from the 360, some multiplatform fare, a $60 Motorstorm tech demo and Resistance which by all accounts-couldn't hold Gears of War's jock.

Then the games that gamers want most are pretty much all going multiplatform. Virtua Fighter 5, Devil May Cry 4, Resident Evil 5, Grand Theft Auto 4, Assasins Creed, Unreal Tournament...the list goes on and on. Then you have the persistent rumors of Metal Gear Solid 4 jumping ship and Microsoft in talks with Square to bring Final Fantasy over....the PS3 is looking like the most luxurious oceanliner with no passengers.

Okay, considering I got back from work and am tired, I'll keep this short. In fact, I'll post something from Neogaf that relates to the UK article Trebor linked:

.... its the freakin' second week. For the most expensive gaming console in the world right now, that ain't bad. Am I spinning now? I see this whole article you posted as spinning in the first place. An article can say "PS3 sales dramatically drop by 82% in the second week" versus "Most PS3s supplied by Sony sold out in the 2nd week after the most impressive console launch in UK gaming history". Same meaning. Ones terribly postive, the other terribly negative. 10 pages, no stats, and you know what - even if you had stats in the end - I got two words for you, and I proudly say this as a huge fan of Sony - **** happens

Really though, it's the same all around. Just wait until Moody really does get a 360. We'll be in for the ultimate fanboy action ever.
