I was cleaning house of some of my older gaming magazines when I came across an interesting article about Quake for the Dreamcast. I was shocked to remember that back then Dreamcast Players could battle PC Players in the same arena/match!
This got me thinking: if they could do it way back then, why not now? Of course, 'm not talking about platform exclusives like Halo or Super Smash Bros. But with all the multi-plat games coming out for the 3 systems, how come we aren't seeing more of this? Something like Star Wars:Battleground would have been perfect for this. How cool would it be for me to be able to challenge Glockstar to Burnout 5 on his 360 from my PS3? Or a team deathmatch of Gaddy/Trebor against me and Last Word in the next Timesplitters? Even if a lot of these games can't come out for the Wii, how about 360/PS3 cross platform gameplay. Half-Life 2/Counterstrike would be awesome. How about online Co-op in Mercenaries 2?
How many of you would like to see this?
Also, does anyone know (Mochan?) how come we're not seeing this now?

I can understand why the PC vs. Console thing won't happen. We'd be so comfy in our sofa's or lounging backwards on cushions that we'd be easy prey for the PC nerds that stare at their screens from four inches away.

Well, there is PC/XBOX/360 cross platform gameplay with vista's upcoming halo 2 port, other than that I don't knoe.

Live Anywhere will allow this, assuming any of the PCtards here will even want to pay to play cross platform.

Shadowrun will be cross platform for the PC/XBOX 360 and that comes out in a month or two. They've apparently spent a lot of time tuning it to somehow be fair for console folks who don't have a mouse/keyboard but we'll have to wait and see how that turns out.

How cool would it be for me to be able to challenge Glockstar to Burnout 5 on his 360 from my PS3? ...
Not that cool. Now if you challenged me to a match of Marvel Ultimate Alliance or invited to play co-op in Rainbow Six Vegas or SCDA... :wink5: Sorry, I'm not that big a fan of Burnout. I'm sure Cuddly Knife and Tappy will take your challenge tho'. Well, maybe. They're damned good, and if you're not on their level then they might not waste time with you - you'd just bring them down. (And they won't teach you how to turbo boost off the line.) :(
But I get what you're saying. I've always thought that would be cool. Cross-console to cross-console.
Console-to-PC? #@$% that. The PC snobs might think it's funny, but I dread the day that 360 and PC gamers can get matched up over Live. Unless you can stipulate that the PC users have to use a game controller, it's a fracking retarded idea.

In theory, you see more and further with higher resolution. does that give the advantage to PC?
Mochan
03-26-2007, 09:17 AM
Nah, you don't see more or further, the pixels are just smaller but you see the same game screen.
The only time you see more is if you're using a widescreen monitor and the game supports this. In this respect consoles actually have the advantage, as widescreen is defacto for the nextgen consoles whereas many PC gamers still game on 4:3.
Some PC games though support dual or even triple monitor support....

There's no console-to-console multiplayer because each console manufacturer wants you to buy THEIR console. MS won't let you play against PS3 owners because they don't want you to buy a PS3.

Am I missing something here? Last time I check I've been playing FFXI on my PS2 with 360 and PC users. That's cross-platform entertainment right there. PS2/360/ and PC users all on the same servers playing with eachother. It's going on right now.
I think with MMO's we could see more of this as MS doesn't control the servers unless they publish the game. Only thing is, now you've got Xbox users paying monthly fees on top of the Live Sub. Ask any Xbot who plays FFXI. Well just food for thought.

I coulda swore that you couldn't play 360 with the PS2/PC. I could be wrong though. This is all I found at IGN:
Since it's possible to play as your PS2 or PC characters on the Xbox 360, it's worth picking this one up if you're seeking a graphical upgrade. Of course, that's assuming you've already been playing the game previous to this release, own an Xbox 360 and an accompanying hard drive.

Yaeh, I'm not interested in console to PC but console to console (shoulda made that clearer). Now that's what I'm talkin' about, Glocky! :D
Rainbox Six and Ultimate Aliiance are great examples of what I'd like. They're both basically the same on the PS3 and 360 (sorry Nintendo/Wii Game Boyz), so why can't they have cross platform connections.
What's SCDA? Soul Caliber?

No, Papa, I missed something.:blush2: I'd forgotten about FFXI. But I'm mostly talking about PS3/360 crossovers.
Guys, how cool would it be for VGR members to play the next 2K Football, Hockey, Baseball (or Madden if you prefer) against one another? Or for us to have our own clans in the next great multiplat shooter -- or fighter?
BTW, is this just a matter of deciding who owns the server, like the conflict that MS and EA had several years ago? Cause we know that the technology is there. I'll betch you that if Milkdrinkers and Xbots knew they'd be able to play against each other, MORE people would jump online and software sales would increase -- which means more money for the companies (especially MS).

Well you are wrong, but that's no biggie. It makes sense to think that with Live you'd only be able to play with other 360 users. With FFXI, Square-Enix runs there own servers, so Live members have to pay an extra subscription(as I assume it'll be with all MMO's unless MS publishes the game). Needless to say PC/PS2/360 users are playing FFXI together. It was clearly evident especially when the 360 version came out because all of the sudden there an influx of new players. Also sometime just out of curiousity someone will ask what systems everyone is playing on. Some will say 360, PS2, or PC. So yea there's definitely support in the same server for the 3 different platforms. I don't see any point i getting you a link as I've seen this first hand as I was an avid FFXI player even when the 360 version came out. Folken can also vouch for this too. However I guess I could get you a link if you really need it.
FFXI is one of the few games I enjoy playing on console rather than PC, because of the game pad and I don't have a game pad for my PC. However a USB keyboard is still a must for the console versions. Ya'll should try this game out. Yes I'm advertising it becaus I'm starting it up again next month, but I know most of you xbots aren't really into that genre. If you are though, feel free to give me a shout. It should be noted this game does require the 360 version with the HDD.

Wow, I think I might actually try it, Papa. I've always wanted to try out one of those MMORPGs, but my ghetto pc won't allow it, and Phantasy Star Online for the 360 didn't play too hot. I was reading that the 360 version has all of the add-ons, but would it be hard for a total noob like myself to get into this game, or is it user-friendly? Also, do a lot of people still play?
Zilla, SCDA is Splinter Cell Double Agent.
And I don't know about how people would be wanting to play against each other here. I mean, I've gotten ripped up by Five in FNR3, and Glock and TMG and myself have shredded terrorists in Vegas, and that was gaming at it's funnest, but I'm still a little bitter at Tappy Tibbons for wussing out on our Burnout 3 matches, even though he talked the game. Maybe part 5, Tappy? Wasn't there alo beef one time between Moody and someone else who fought in a fighting game, but someone denied the loss, or someone disconnected. I don't want to play anyone who plays like that. It's all in good fun.

We've been doing it for a couple years now. It's called XBOX Live. Sorry Zilla I know you don't own a 360 but we've played a bit of everything there from time to time (VGR members that is).
Bash XBOX all you want (to whomever does) but it certainly is nice to have occasional VGR matches. Well at least I like having that option.

Well C.K. indeed that happened some years ago. Me and Folken played a game of Capcom vs. SNK2 on Xbox live. I went over a friends house to play against Folken online. Indeed we played and I lost.
However I tried to piss Folken off by saying it wasnt me that was playing that it was in fact my brother. I got kinda suspicious because when I asked Folken about who he used he acted like he didnt even remember who he used.So there was doubt on both sides of the fence.
But basically thats what happened.

By all means I would at least give it a go. I'll send you a PM about it however, because I don't want you to go out, buy it and not like it. Granted I love it and still do. Folken used to play with me. He doesn't play anymore but he damn sure got his money's worth out of it. If you like RPG's this will be up your alley.
As for just starting up, that won't really be a problem since I can lvl up with you with one of my low lvl jobs (you'll figure it out if you buy it.) I've been trying to get Bane to play with me too, and I think he might just tip into it too, so then you'll have 2 of us to help you out. We'll talk more about it in PM, but I'll tell you I'm excited to just the thought having some VGR players in FFXI as I've never had a bad experience in online gaming with them (Folken in FFXI and Bane and DBS in GRAW)

MMORPGs are a little too friendly actually... they're designed to reel you in hook, line and sinker for you to grind your life away levelling up and farming items. Myself I never saw the appeal but every now and then I still want to try the next MMORPG out to see if it has improved any for my taste. It's cool because MMORPGs today at least are trying to improve on the grinding formula.
You know Papa, I never did get to game online with you, did I? I've played with everyone on the PC boards except Renz, you and Il.

So you haven't played with the coolest people on the PC boards, hmm?
Actually I'm not one to speak, I haven't played with anyone on the PC boards yet. I was going to roll a WoW character on the guys' realm until I found out it wasn't a PvP server. I might still join up with them if I decide to pursue my idea of a Draenei Mage.

I still have Half LIfe 2 sitting around somewhere so I can play CS Source anytime, problem is it takes forever to install HL2 and my connection has been very flaky on this new ISP.
