Tekken 5:

EXCLUSIVE: Hands on with Tekken 5 for PS3
by GamePro Staff | 02/14/2007 | 4:36:47 PM PST subscribe to this feed | print | digg this! | Share on Facebook Namco gives Vicious Sid an exclusive hands-on play with the final US version of the PlayStation 3 brawler Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection! Read on for our full hands-on impressions.

It's no secret among Tekken players that Tekken 3 was the series' best showing. That's why it was such great news that Tekken 5 was a much-needed return to form for Namco's flagship fighter, as well as one of the prettiest PS2 games ever released.

Well, you ain't seen nothing yet. Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection, a sort of expansion to the original Tekken 5, was quietly released in arcades last year, and also made a surprisingly great showing on the handheld PSP. But now it's headed to the PlayStation 3 as an exclusive downloadable game, and we've got the first hands-on experience with the final U.S. release code.

On the PS3 you're getting an extensively reworked, remastered version of the biggest Tekken game yet. And we're talking BIG: 35 characters (including the now-unlockable Jinpachi), 19 fighting arenas, and scores of unlockable costumes.

Paul's still got power on his side
1080p Dreams
But how does it look? In a word, sharp. The game supports every SD and HD resolution, all the way up to 1080p (not the 720p mistakenly reported in the March issue of GamePro). At 1080p, Tekken 5: DR simply dazzles: It might not have the latest-and-greatest shader effects ala Dead or Alive 4, but it definitely looks new-gen. Though it wasn't developed to take full advantage of the PS3's exotic hardware, this is one fine-looking fighter that doesn't look a bit out of date. We can only imagine what the long-awaited Tekken 6 will look like, once Namco's programmers start delving into the secrets of the PS3's Cell processor.

We did, however, notice a glimmer or two of slowdown during our gameplay in the 1080p mode. It only lasted for a fraction of a second, but it popped up several times on one of the busier backgrounds. We weren't particularly concerned, but it's still worthy of note.

The controls are, of course, just about perfect. And why wouldn't they be? What the series lacks in originality, it makes up for in consistency: Tekken hasn't changed its core control scheme in years. We did notice, though, that the Sixaxis's analog shoulder triggers aren't well suited for a fighting game, so you'll want to avoid mapping any buttons to them. Gameplay-wise, the only bummer is the lack of any online multiplayer modes, though it's hardly a surprise given that Tekken still hasn't made the leap to internet play -- we expect Tekken 6 will.

The environments are loaded with details
King of the PS3?
Is Tekken 5: DR worth a download? Almost certainly. The amazing amount of content and the time-testing combat should make Tekken 5: DR a no-brainer for PS3 fighting fans, particularly at that bargain-bin price. It might not look quite as good as Virtua Fighter 5 or Dead or Alive 4, but Tekken 5: DR is shaping up to be a well-rounded competitor in its own right.

If we can expect further downloadable games of this quality and price coming from Sony's online store, Xbox Live may have some serious catching up to do.

Suggestions for Tekken 6
Vicious Sid is a longtime Tekken player, and here he offers Namco some advice for the company's long-awaited Tekken 6.

Tekken 3 was an attention-grabber because it allowed the characters to age. Consider bumping Tekken 6 ten or even 20 years into the future.

Bring back tag-team matches.

Online play is a must: think four-player tag-team and big tournaments.

Consider a (tasteful) Mature rating, with blood, broken bones, and possibly a finishing move or fatality system.

Refresh basic animations such as kicks, punches, and strikes.

Consider a darker, grittier look, ala Gears of War.

Veer away from over-the-top characters like giant pandas, killer robots, and Yoshimitsu.

New Tekken 6 details and pics released
by GamePro Staff | 02/16/2007 | 12:58:37 PM PST subscribe to this feed | print | digg this! | Share on Facebook Namco reveals an all-new trailer for Tekken 6, featuring two new characters and the first-ever gameplay footage.
After all the production delays and after all the assumptions by fans who wished for a Tekken launch title on the PS3, Bandai Namco has finally shown us the fruits of its labor. At the AOU Amusement Expo, a convention dedicated to Japan's arcade industry, a new three-minute trailer for the arcade version of Tekken 6 made its debut, featuring in-game fight footage for the very first time. In addition, the trailer also showcased two brand new characters: Leo (a blonde pretty-boy type) and Zafina (a sultry brunette).

According to reports from Impress Watch, Leo is a German-born fighter whose techniques are based on Bajiquan, an explosive martial art that is known for its short range power and elbow strikes. Namco representatives assure that both Tekken veterans and rookies will be able to adapt to him quickly. The reporter's initial impression was that Leo would be a speed character that would invoke memories of Feng's style.

Zafina, on the other hand, has more of a mysterious aura about her that will both fascinate and confuse opponents, the reporter claims. Her unique fighting style is comprised of fluid techniques resembling those of a spider, clinging to and crawling across the arena floor.

Namco also promises that Tekken 6 will feature the second-largest roster of characters of any other Tekken game with more than 35 currently being planned for the game. There will be a healthy mix of old favorites and new characters, including the return of Armor King, who can actually be seen fighting in the trailer. Apparently, his return in Dark Resurrection wasn't just a hallucinogenic figment of somebody's imagination.

The trailer also featured brand new stages and environments, including Bryan's stage, which features a tank sitting in the middle of the arena. Just like the more recent Tekken games, it looks as if the developers will continue to pay attention to creating obstacles within the playing field. Facial features in the game also look more detailed than before, although changes obviously need to be made to Asuka's creepily soulless expression.

But perhaps the most interesting part of the trailer was the character customization system, which has been greatly upgraded since the series' last installment, offering customization for 10 different parts of a character's costume. For instance, Jack-5 (or whichever Jack model will be appearing in this game) can now be equipped with individual armor parts that can cover him from head to toe.

The trailer ends with Bryan whipping out a shotgun from his back (probably a customized item) before blasting his opponent with it. Although this will most likely be implemented as a win pose and not an actual in-game technique, it's open to speculation whether customized items will have an effect on character animations.

The trailer has been made available on the official Japanese Tekken 6 site, which has just recently upgraded to add a brand new Tekken 6 section. The page is sparse with content currently, but rest assured that more updates will be coming soon.

Character detail has taken a massive leap forward

Newcomer Leo

Wall strikes are still a key strategy

The arenas boast far more detail than before

There are many different costume combinations, and the detail is impressive

Thanx for the post. Personally it's not that I'm not interested in Tekken (Which I'm not, to be honest) I just feel a little burned when they are releasing a souped up PSP game on the PS3, like who effin' cares? Same with that retarded Coded Arms Assult......oh man that game was abysmal on PSP.....I litterally hated that title.

I'm honestly glad to see titles like RB6, SC or even another Jak game. I really don't want to see rehashed crap showing up on PS3....like Untold Legends:rolleyes:

I'll be excited for Tekken again when they announce that there will be online play. Until then, I've already played 5 enough, and Tag is still my fave.

Thanks Ocelot.

Tekken Tag is my favorite too C.K. I agree that if either Tekken is online playable that would indeed be huge!

I still play Tekken 5. I'm trying to see how far I can get while playing Arcade mode. Right now my rank is Master.(Playing with King) How far in rank have you gotten C.K.?
