Dell makes alright computers, but when it comes to their software they just cram a standard set onto pretty much all their comps without worrying about optimization.

What I recommend you do is just reformat the comp and start from scratch. That way you won't have to worry about all the extraneous crap companies like to throw onto their comps that usually doesn't serve much purpose other than being a fatter resource hogging version that does something you can do yourself easily. Having a thinner and cleaner OS makes for a MUCH more stable computer.

Also, that System32 error could be anything...can you go into more details about what it says?

i was told by dell that i cant recover this pc. i can erase all info and reinstall xp and the software. i decided that was not necessary yet.

i just restored again by the way. the mouse is still frozen sometimes on startup. i went back in to play mohaa and the sound was gone. unreal. this is why people hate computers. the system32 popup is gone for now. i am ready to smash it up and send it back to them in ****ing pieces!

It might not be necessary but it'll save you alot of heartache in the long run. It's what I recommend anyone does once they get a new computer.

But from what you've told me it sounds like you got a driver conflict somewhere...more than likely it's your soundcard since it's giving you the most trouble. What you should do is uninstall it completely, get rid of any trace of it that you can find, then go and track down the latest drivers for it. If you did it right you should see those system32 popups disappear and you shouldn't have any problems with it from here on out. Your soundcard is the one piece of hardware in a comp that is most likely to fub up on you driverwise..and it can occasionally affect a few other things as well.

Oh yeah, just to be sure..make sure the thing is seated in the mobo right, too. I've had mine wiggle itself out of the PCI slot before (dunno how) and it made things act extra weird.

Are there any exclamation points in your device manager? (my computer/control panel/system/device manager)
I would agree it is probably a messed up driver somewhere. I would not blame it all on Dell as this stuff does happen. A power surge, bad installation, loose connection..etc I had one computer shipped to me that did have a wire off the sound card in shipping. I do agree that if you have a tray full of icons you should close anything you don't use often and goto your startup folder and delete anything you do not need to load on boot. They can cause trouble and anti virus software can as well if it is running while you are gaming. Best to disable it when you are into some heavy gaming.

Also, is your mouse USB? And do you have other USB devices connected? And do you have front USB ports that are being used? This happened to me, where a device connected to a front USB port conflicted with my mouse, which is connected to a mainboard USB in the back.

on startup today, its ok. i have deleted all the crap in the startup menu. only thing running is macafee and the soundsystem. i will reload mohaa and see what happens. the mouse is a combo connection. the logitech mx duo corless. does not use a usb port.

Its my belief & experince with both Dell & Gateway systems [3] that they are shipped pre tested [ran in for hours].

While some owners have genuine problems with thier prepackaged unit, those problems usually show up immediately.

What propblems Ive had over the last four years w/3 systems has been my fault, screw'n with this, dowloading that which isnt compatible....or as pk13 indicated, possible incorrect install of hardware [mouse in wrong port? ]

I had similar problem w/cursor freeze. As tech instructed me:
[1] I shut down unit.
[2] I swapped keyboard & mouse connections.
[3] I rebooted unit, windows acknowledged devices & away I went.

What I described may not be beneficial in your case pk13.

I gotta ask one thing, since unit is new, why not walkthrough situation live with tech support? Start to finish, including "System 32 Error Notice?

I've messed my PC's up bad, real bad & the techs earned their money [its been a year or so since I used tech support, which tells me either [a] PC are built better/more stable OS OR [b] I've learned to stop srew'n with my unit in adverse way]

Keep us updated, as acurate as possible. Id like to hear what exactly was at fault [OS, Hardware or Software] with you brand new Dell. ;)

This totally makes me CRANK!
I posted earlier on subject of US tech jobs being exported, aka "Out Sourced". Another way of saying to US workers "bye-bye".

I didnt buy a Dell this time around for that very reason. Dell has recently moved their manufaturing [majority] to China, support to Asia/India.
AT&T, MS & others are providing tech support via India, & as you noted, there is a language barrier. This is NOT what you paid for.
[end of rant].

pk13: When talking to tech support; & you cant understand them, ask for supervisor!. This will get the message across tech support is near useless.

I experienced the Indian tech support too.
No comment (it's gonna be bad)
Listen,
there is a fine free little MS proggie, called Regclean.
Google will find the site for you.
D/load it and run it and let it fix your Registry probs.
It might be as simple as that,AND it doesn't hurt since it's reversible.
I had some similar issues when I was playing around with driver updates, and shareware .
It fixed it in a jiffy.

Just so you know I hosed my system with a simple install of AOL 9. It must have some issues with win 98se and after the install AOL was corrupted. Ok, no biggy as I was just curious and thinking of switching isps...I uninstalled thier software. Uh oh...it changed files but didn't replace or correct that on the uninstall. My modem would connect (soft connect though) and no info up or down. My browser didn't work and kept giving me the error message shutting it down. Just so you know..most of the time it is our fault.

I reformatted and started fresh and yesterday I picked up Gothic 2 so I am a happy gamer again. :)

Once the system has started up go to: Start>Run>and type: Eventvwr.msc

Now check both system tabs and application tabs, look for the times when the computer has locked up input after loading.

If it's what I think is happening, there is a simple solution, but I want to find out if it definately is this before giving you the answer (involves small .reg changes).
