View Full Version : re:Xbox & DVD's
Surfing for Xbox info, I noticed some [admittedly old] complaints regarding Xboxs ability to play some DVD titles. Maybe this was a problem when box was first released?
"Q": Can you list any DVD titles that WONT play on Xbox?
Im purchasing the Lord of the Rings series on DVD, & specifically would like to hear if anyone had any problems playing this on Xbox.
Thanks for school'n me on the 'Box!

Every DVD player that I've personally come into contact with (either mine, family's, or friends) has had a problem reading a disc, or two. And it's different for almost every one. So while the XBox may have a list of DVD's that it can't read, it's no different than any other DVD player out there!
I'm not really up on the technical stuff, but I think "progressive scan" is the only thing that really eliminates this problem. Am I wrong, here? Does someone know; can anyone enlighten us as to what the benefits of having a progressive scan DVD player are?
As far as DVDs that the XBox "won't play"... I've only come across only one so far! (And I'm a BIG movie buff.) Jurassic Park 3 (full screen version - don't know if that matters tho'). Strangely - and unfortunately (?) - it's the only disc that my "regular" DVD player (an RCA) won't play either. (No, it's not the disc - my roomies Pioneer plays it fine.) I'm thinking that's no mere coincidence... ;)
Never you worry about the Lord of the Rings discs (the "regular" (2-disc)ones anyways - NOT the 5-disc special box-set editions - they play fine! I'm pretty sure... even confident... that most (like 98% (!) ) will play fine, actually.
And btw, the XBox/remote is NOT left wanting for features. It's got just about everything that you could want... 'cept maybe volume control :p ... it's just all in the big green "Display" button. Ah heck, just go read my review of the DVD Playback Kit here at VGR - it's the thrid one down (by GregorySpeed)...

Thats optimistic info Glockstar, & I like it!
Jurrasic Park [original] is what motivated me to installing pre-amped subwoofer under floor joyst of house[connected to 5 channel surround sys] so I could experience earth shaking audio! What a thrill it was.
You give green light to "2 disc" Lord of Rings set.
Was there a problem w/5 disc set?
Im on my way to read DVD playback review by Gregory Speed.
Thanks for helping me to cover my "pre-purchase" bases on Xbox.
[BTW, any sighting of Xbox bundled w/Mech Assault in major US stores would be appreciated if brought to my attention]

Hell yeah!
That Pioneer of my roommates, that I mentioned earlier... that's part of his 5 channel Dolby Digital surround system.
Glockstar LOVES Jurassic Park! (The first one.) It's still in my Top 15 Favorite movies Of-All-Time. JP3? Ehhh. It was good, the first time through; but really not worth owning. It's the roomies now; he can have it.
One thing I should make clear, however...
the discs that I've said "can't play", can play - just not all the way thru without "skipping" in certain parts, or some other bullcrap.
With regards to the LOTR 5-disc special box sets...
I have no idea if there is anything wrong with them - I can't afford them. :p (I just bought the regular versions.)
Remember, new XBox (systems) get bundled with The Clone Wars, Tetris, and 2 months of free XBL (without the use of headset). The new XBox Live Starter Kits with headset and full verison of Mechassault go on sale Oct. 15.

Yup, I love my Pioneer componenet build. ;)
Jurrasic 1 was a keeper, the rest of the series I have lived w/o.
Re: Xbox; I was @ Costco yesterday & seen it bundled w/Clone Wars & Tetris [Clone Wars any good?].
I guess Im making a bigger deal out of it [Xbox bundle w/Mech] than it really is. Mech Assault should be easy to pick up new anywhere?
I went through this on recent purchase of Game Cube, I insisted on buying it bundled w/Rogue Leader. Hows the song go..... "You cant always get what you want, but if try sometimes, you just might find, you get what you need".
Grattitude

A full version of Mech assault is slated to be bundled with the xbox live starter kit version 3. $69.99 for the bundle, including headset.
I don't know of any mech assault xbox bundle waiting to be released. Progressive scan doesn't affect playability of dvds, and the feature is currently over-rated regardless. Most sets that accept progressive scan input typically feature an internal line doubler which negates the need for progressive scan.

Ironically, the only disc I've seen not play was the first Lord of the Rings DVD. However, my Lord of the Rings disc won't play on my regular DVD player as well, so it's my specific disc.
There is one problem with my Xbox playing DVDs: animated series such as The Simpsons and Family Guy. Maybe it's because I have the high definition pack and an HDTV ... I don't know why, but there is a little problem. When playing Simpsons or Family guy on Xbox, the framerate slows down a bit in certain areas and it's a little noticable. This does not happen on any other DVDs. Go figure?

I hope thats all it is, your copy :)
Lord of the Rings not working on Box would be a downer.
Lord of the Rings [original] is to me what Star Wars was years ago when first released; a BIG deal, lol.

I think there's a major problem with a lot of those season-series-collectors-type box sets. I got my friend the Simpsons Season 1 box set/collection, when that came out, for Christmas but he was never able to watch it... his Hitachi DVD player had series issues with all of the discs and the vast makority of the episodes would cut out and/or skip all over. His DVD player had issues with a lot of DVDs though, to tell you the truth. Hi-end player too. Go figure.
Ironically, his had no problem whatsoever with the Jurassic Park III DVD that I talked about earlier.
Oh, and thx for the info. on prog.scan, mass.
