A few days ago I went out and got myself a new 5 button optical mouse, everything was perfect and works great until I tried to play Dungeon Siege, the mouse cursor became hugely laggy and unresponsive so I decided to check for patches or other people having problems, turns out it isn't a new problem but nothing has been done about it at all, the optical mouse support for the game is definately none existant since I popped in my normal usb mouse and it worked perfectly like before.
New games seem to work perfectly, however just read BF1942 has problems with opticals, I guess i'll have to try that.

I've been using an optical mouse for years and haven't run into a single problem..specially not with BF42 or Dungeon Siege. It might be the brand of mouse you're using.
Course now that I've said that..yup..there it goes. Mouse just exploded. Figures, I go to brag about something and it breaks a few mintues later.

I use a MS Explorer Optical mouse, and I have had NO troubles at all with those two games...

I'm unsure of the make of this mouse, I went to a store called best buy or something and it was $15 on sale, so I thought i'd get it, its funny that my original mouse works perfectly with it. lol
Are your mice cordless opticals? Mine is a PS/2 optical mouse.

Mine's a USB mouse, and like Teh Steebz is a Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer...I try to stay away from cordless stuff since I hate having to replace batteries every few days.
I'm surprised that people still manufacture PS/2 mice anymore...are you sure it's PS/2 only and isn't wearing a USB to PS/2 adapter? If it is, then it's possble (though sort of unlikely) that it's causing the problem.
Personally, I think you ran into a bit of crappy luck and got a bad off-brand mouse. : \

Its a Jasco optical scroll mouse, most definately PS/2 varity. I found some later drivers for it and still has a couple of minor hitches with Dungeon Siege, however only on the main menu now, but actually go into the game and all of a sudden it works perfectly now. lol I haven't tried BF1942 yet, I hoping thats going to work perfectly also. I have to say apart from that the mouse works great, its especially sweet with Chrome since I can program the 2 extra buttons.

the wheel scroll will not work during games. the push feature works but not the scroll. very strange. i used the ms explorer optical mouse for years and loved it.

Hmm, should work assuming you have it mapped for command execution. What game[s] are you using it in that it doesnt work?
Does the game you are playing have a default command associated with mouse scrolling?

Yup, I have the exact same model Ren... Right down to USB connection as well. I would never buy cordless for the same reasons as well... I would absolutely HATE to have to replace/recharge/run out of batteries right after installing a new game...
Not having USB may be the reason for issues in DS and BF42...

Who in the right mind would spend $100 on a mouse? No matter how good it is :p lol

Having spent more than 2 years trying in vain to improve my aiming skillz, here is what I have found re:Logi mice (my pref.)
The mouseware 9.78 software is similar to the windows software but not exactly, this is what creates major freezes mid-game (Hitman2,Halo.etc,on my system at least)
I use the MX700 which has a 850 resolution (very good for CAD and gaming)
.
The newest MS XP drivers, luckily recognize in game all buttons and wheel,(except the 3 tiny ones above and below the wheel, that I personally find hard to use).
What is important to understand is that through mouseware 9.78,the thumb button customization is limited to certain keys,so it is not missed there.
The resolution and mouse architecture is the same with the MS drivers, the only thing that is not there is the little craplet on the desktop showing battery life,so I would suggest that you should do this:
First, using the mouseware software 9.78 configure speed and acceleration(I don't use accel,no cursor shadows ,either),disable the webscrolling function and make it "universal scroll",and assign the 2 thumb buttons to really "free" kbd keys, like: home end, delete, insert,(because these are usually never pre-assigned/used by default in games ,so no conflicts there),also make sure the wheel in addition to univ.scrolling is assigned as 3rd button when pressed.
Then remove the mouseware software, thoroughly, even the logitemp files and registry files too,do not reboot, until you unplug the mouse usb docking station, then reboot ,replug the sensor, and let XP install it's native drivers.Like this all the fine tuning is done in advance and the mouse is ready to work with the XP MS drivers.
For those who have trouble with the wheel in-game recognition (usually it happens if they still use mouseware),the Logitech site used to offer a registry patch called game_whl.exe I tried to find it yesterday but that site is hopeless (for me),it's a tiny proggie,I can e-mail it to anyone wanting it.
This program disables the _em.exe which becomes active upon startup, you can manually disable that program but it will be needed for other programs later.
Now re: Razer
I got it as a present, and put it to use,I did two things:
a)run it diagonally across the screen top right tobottom left,
movement was jagged.
b)I tried to go vertically down, from mid screen to bottom,it was unresponsive to small movement
c)The amount of lint that collects inside even after 5 minutes use is unbelievable.
I upgraded the drivers and had some freezing issues (occasional)
Conclusion,I use it in the very rare times when the Logi has issues with games to restart the PC.
Lastly for gaming,I would recommend a non-cordless kbd, since too many USB cordless controllers sometimes create response issues,(sometimes)
;)
I sure hope this was of some help.
