View Full Version : The Official PS3 Can't Outsell a 6 Year Old Console Thread

Boy have the Xbots heard this one month after month. Now, it is Sony's time on the clock. It is officially one month and counting. In December, it will certainly be two months and counting. Let's see a show of hands here, at what point will the ps3 outsell the ps2? Will the ps3 ever do it in 2007? Will there still be ps3 "shortages" 6 months from now? How can we ever tell that "shortages" aren't the problem?

Before I have said that I thought the 360's price was far too extravagant. Many people (not pointing fingers here necessarily) think that Sony's brand name alone is enough to convince Americans to pony up even more hard earned cash. Keep in mind the ps2 will hit 99 dollars, most likely by next Christmas, or even sooner. I will try and keep this thread periodically updated, even if I end up getting "owned".

I think the 360 outsold the ps2 for at least one month, I'll try and confirm that. But my official prediction is that the ps3 won't consistently outsell the ps2 (more than one month in a row) until March 2008. Is this crazy? Or does the power of Sony compel Us?

That's funny. 360's been out for a year and it still can't out sell the PS2. Yet the 360 doesn't have the excuse of not being having enough console available to beat the readily available PS2. You can start hating once the readily available 360 closes the gap.

Comparing the numbers of a console thats been out for 5 years against the numbers of a console thats been out just over a year? :out: Enough said.

Papa Smurf, that's my point. How long are you going to give Sony before you make that same claim. When do you think it will happen? The whole point is to go out on a limb here and make bold assumptions that you really can't back up with anything but armchair analysis:thumbsup:

And, in the future, it would be cool to see an azrael avatar, or maybe mix it up with some gargamel. I have been thinking about the "little people: myself

The power of Christ Compels you! (sprinkles holy water)

I think the PS2 will continue to sell as long as games are made for it, and there's no end in sight for that just yet. Eventually Sony will have to kill the PS2 off or face competing with their own systems, and that would be bad in the long run. The 360 has very few months of selling more systems than the PS2, MS can't like that very much. But at least the 360 has picked up in sales resently. Somehow the PS3s release has increased 360 sales. I think people waited for the PS3, played the demo stations and said "Meh, this just ain't no better than 360 as far as I can tell, give me that 360 over there sitting on the shelf, what the hell"

As for when the PS3 will outtake the PS2. That's a good question. I know that I'm not buying anything regardless of numbers for at least a year, maybe two. When I finally decide to get something maybe I'll be in the Sony hating camp too asking that same question.

When Sony no longer has production problems and can produce more systems than it can sell, then you can start the comparison. How are we supposed to give a date when we have no inside information?

Few gave MS that luxury before all the "can't outsell a 6 year old console" quips, and now the bataan death march facing down the ps2 will start in earnest for the ps3. Somebody had to start this countdown. I still think it might be 08. The power of the Sony brand just might prove me wrong, but I don't mind going out on a limb. No guts, no glory!

I agree. I think the PS2 will still be selling well through the end of 07. The only way to stop people from buying it is to stop producing the PS2. Not only does Sony have to compete with next gen system 360, but also against their own last-gen system PS2. Sure, people knock MS for stopping the XBOX when the 360 came out, but that also assured that people were going to be upgrading, unlike Sony, where they are pushing away potential PS3 buyers by having the PS2 so readily avaliable, with more appealing games than the next-gen upgrade.

God of War 2 and the new Burnout made exclusively for last-gen, have my eye more than Heavenly Sword and Motorstorm. Of course, I'd be singing a different tune if DMC4 was coming out soon. Sure, the PS3 has next-gen Burnout, but so does the 360.

The point of selling hardware is to sell software. The 360 did that even during its launch month. The ps3's hardware/software ratio can only be described as pathetic. Not just in NA, but also in japan where the ps3 for 2 weeks in a row failed to land a title in the top 30. The numbers are a joke. I don't know what the guys buying ps3s are doing, but they're not buying games, that's for hell sure.

Motorstorm, sony's big killer app, so say the phony boys, debuted in japan and sold a whopping 7k. Yowza.

By contrast, MS claims to have moved 2 million copies of Gears of War globally.

A few more months of anemic ps3 software sales and you can kiss the thought of third party ps3 exclusives goodbye.

The PS1 was in production for 10 years, and noone cited conflicts with PS2.

The Ps2 wasn't $600, and it wasn't facing a fully-functioning MS games division, a global Wii craze, or the Japanese DS craze which is so extreme Sony is losing console exclusives to the DS (i.e. Dragon Quest.)

The last thing Sony needs in its drive to win the Blue Ray/HD-DvD war and get an installed base is to be competing with the budget price Ps2 and its ongoing excellent lineup of software.

What's the matter Neo? Still have nothing to contribute, that all you can do is give others a pat on the back?
