Oh god the return of the "hidden power" How many years are we going to wait for that?

I really doubt that's 20% of the PS3's power. I give it 50% at least. If, on the other hand, the article is correct, then...

DAYMN!!

There are two statements regarding to the power of PS3.

1. PS3 is really REALLY hard to program for.
2. EA was able to utilze 50% of PS3's power in a few months.

Both can't be true at the same time. So which one is it?

If PS3 was indeed hard to program for, then it is understandable that fight night 3 is only fraction of what PS3 can do. If EA was able to use 50% of PS3's power from the start, then PS3 can't be that hard to program for. After all, PS3's fight night 3 made the launch around the same time as xbox360/PS2 version.

Yeah really, but all that I want to know is who measures this stuff, and how do they in fact measure the percentage of power that the thing is using? Furthermore, when I look at some of these next-gen games I keep wondering whether we are reaching the point of diminishing returns in the "power" department.

On that level of programming they do have very strenuous software metrics that measure and reflect various parts of the development process. It's too hard, too long and too expensive of a process not to have them. I wouldn't call 20% accurate, but I don't think he's pulling it out his ass either. Those metrics should improve over time to include taking advantage of what the PS3 can do.

No, it's ok. You can keep on sleeping. No one cares what you think on this matter, or any matter.

Just wait until Toguro uses 120% of the PS3's power.

As for the 20% thing, I'd say it's more like they can use 5% of the Cell's power, and like 80% of the RSX's power. So unless they can discover a way to overcome the GPU bottleneck, the extra remaining power of the Cell won't be too handy.

Instead of speculating what a game would be like that uses 100% of the PS3's power, let's guess the development cost of a game that uses 100% of the PS3's power and the likelihood of any developer willing to gamble said cost.

I don't think it's as simple as more money equals better programming. If anything, getting more familiar with the system would only cut the cost down.

It's not "more money equals more programming." It's "make more games, know the system more, 10th game later same cost better programming".

That's the smart way to do it IMO.

It's not the programming side of things that cost the most money, it's the art.

Back of the ancient days of Before Doom 3 and Farcry, all someone had to do to make a texture was run around with a digital camera and doctor the resulting pictures up in Photoshop. You could do a ton of textures in a couple of hours. The long way required painting textures by hand...but even that could be done quickly enough if you were good at what you did.

Nowadays, with your normal and specular maps and all that good crap, you have to model a texture in a 3D appication for your normalmap, take the resulting flat shaded texture based off that model and paint it in Photoshop to get all your grass and grime, then paint your specularmap. To get a even a single good texture using a modern engine, it can take a considerably longer amount of time.

Character models are even more time consuming. Now you have to sculpt each and every little detail into your model for the normalmap, nothing can be faked with a simple texture anymore. It can take weeks to do a nice high poly model, and the talent and knowhow required to make one is much higher than it used to be.

So to make games on the next gen platforms that have a decent amount of length and have all the flash expected of the PS3 and 360 will either take at least twice as long to do, or you have to have a larger team to make everything in the same timeframe. That ends up costing someone alot of money. Programming is only a very small portion of the overall cost of developing a game.

Oh yeah I still remember the good old days when the texture for Doom's walls were made off John Romero's alligator boots.
