Oblivion nabs Spike TV top honors
Cliffy B, Gears also snare awards, but crowd reacts in disbelief as run-and-gun title for the 360 misses top prize.

Fiddy, Tyrese, and Jackson hang before the event.
LOS ANGELES--Another Spike TV Video Game Awards show, another star-studded event that might not have exactly appealed to hardcore fans of the subject it's supposed to celebrate. However, in its fourth try, the "First Network for Men" did pull off one of its best awards shows, in terms of both production and worthy nominees.
The fourth annual Spike TV Video Game Awards were held at the Galen Center in Los Angeles Friday night, with veteran actor Samuel L. Jackson returning for the second consecutive year as the show's host.
The broadcast of Friday's event will be aired on the self-proclaimed "First Network for Men" next Wednesday at 10 p.m. ET/PT and will feature musical performances from Tenacious D and AFI. But GameSpot was in attendance this eve, with the results of the judges' voting below.
Team Gears of War, including Cliffy B (left), took home four awards.
The big winner of the night was The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, which scooped up five awards including the coveted Game of the Year prize. It wasn't a runaway victory for the Bethesda Softworks-developed game though. Gears of War was neck-and-neck with Oblivion until the very last award--Game of the Year.
As the announcer listed off the nominees for Game of the Year, the greatest applause was aimed at Gears of War and Guitar Hero 2. But when Oblivion was announced as the winner, many in the crowd sounded stunned.
Oblivion also walked home with Most Addictive Game (voted on by the public), Best Performance by a Human (Male) for Patrick Stewart, Best Role-Playing Game, and Best Original Score. Gears of War took home four awards total, including Best Shooter, Best Graphics, Best Multiplayer Game, and Best Studio for its developers, Epic Games.
Tony Hawk's Project 8 won Best Individual Sports Game.
The Critics' Choice Award, the only category open for games released after November 7 (games scheduled for release before the end of the year were eligible for the Critics' Choice Award), went to The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. By its requirements, the category was also the only chance for Wii or PlayStation 3 games to take home an award.
Tenacious D kicked off the ceremonies with the band's usual heavy-metal parody rock stylings, and Jackson continued the action with a few sketches before taking the stage in person. Helping Jackson out was Seth MacFarlane, bantering with the Snakes on a Plane star as the voice of Stewie Griffin from Family Guy. Presumably, Stewie will be animated in for the Wednesday broadcast.
There were some world exclusive premieres, including footage of Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2, TNA Wrestling, and the opening cinematic from The Burning Crusade expansion of World of Warcraft. WOW got the deluxe treatment, with a congregation of robed, lip-synching figures taking the stage while the trailer showed above them, occasionally accompanied by some light pyrotechnics.
Heroes' Hayden Panettiere charmed the red carpet before presenting Most Addictive Game to Oblivion.
Beyond that, most of the presenters were in good spirits as they delivered their hit-and-miss lines before an oft-indifferent crowd. Former Dallas Cowboy Michael Irvin let go of a Wii Remote three times on the backswing of a Wii Sports golf game in a staged event, Masi Oka of Heroes dissed the WNBA when presenting the Best Team Sports Game Award, and Tyrese used the opportunity to promote his upcoming CD in the only adlib of the night.
The highlight of the evening came when comedienne Sarah Silverman brought her usual shtick of sarcastic humor to the stage, which was unfortunately lost on most of those in the crowd. She went on a tirade against gamers, saying they "should get an award for their work in AIDS prevention" because they simply stand no chance of getting laid.
Thankfully for those in attendance, Silverman's remarks apparently didn't apply to them. The MTV-generation audience continually filed out of the auditorium throughout the night muttering, "I don't even play video games."

That's where the awards lost all credibility. Everyone knows Lara Croft is hotter than Alyx. Especially the new Lara. :eek6:
But seriously, at least the awards are going to more deserving games this time around. The one major disagreement I have is with the Studio of the Year. That should have definitely gone to Relic for reshaping the entire RTS structure in a way that I'm positive will have the same impact that Command and Conquer had when it was released. Gears of War? Yeah it's good, but I don't see why they get best studio. It's a freakin' shooter.

Personally I think it's too early for these awards. It should be like any other awards show and take place in early new years. I mean for best portable game after just seeing the reviews, I'm damned sure Metal Gear Solid: PO would definitely be on there. Maybe some other games too. Meh.

Spike TV lost all of its crediablity last year when they gave awards to a game that HAD NOT BEEN RELEASED AT THE TIME. King Kong.
U are better off asking a 13 year old what he feels is the best game for each category.

Oblivion snagging best musical score is just too much hype and publicity. When a repetitive, unimaginative and redundant score like Oblivion's by Cut and Paste master Jeremy Soule wins over an awesome soundtrack like Gothic 3's, you know there's a problem -- either in Spike TV's taste or their exposure to actual gaming. And before anyone else tries pouncing on this statement, no I am not saying Gothic 3 is the better game but it definitely had the better soundtrack.
For GOTY, I am more partial to Oblivion winning it, but then I am biased towards RPGs. People surprised that Gears didn't win are just fresh off Gears and have forgotten about the many hours they spent with Oblivion earlier this year.
Prey getting a nod in Best Shooter over GRAW I find extremely insulting. That Call of Juarez isn't even in the list is a travesty.
I also find something very, very wrong with the "Best PC Game" being Company of Heroes (winning over TES IV) yet not even being nominated for GOTY.
Patrick Stewart winning Best Performance of a Human Male is a joke. He had what? 3 minutes worth of talk time?
Alyx Vance being the cyber vixxen is just bonkers.

The show is always fun to watch, but their choice of nominees and winners has no real substance. All flash, no real credibility cause some of the choices are just way too obtuse. It's like they don't take it serious.

I was confused that Oblivion got GOTY but not Best PC Game. I mean if it's GOTY then it's the best game on the PC too, right?
I don't agree though about it winning GOTY, but meh. It's more publicity for the games than an actual judging committee.

Oblivion getting GOTY and not best PC game does kinda sound a bit retarded. They said alot of people was shocked Gears Of War didnt get GOTY. GOW did what Halo did back when the Xbox first launched.
It came from nowhere and captured everybodys attention. In all fairness Oblivion has been out for awhile now. Longer than most of the games it was put up against. Seems like Final Fantasy over the years has been getting snubbed from getting any RPG awards.
I'll probably still watch the show in a couple of days on Spike TV.

I wouldn't exactly say GoW came out of nowhere; the hype for this game was Class A phenomenal.
Final Fantasy has just been getting more and more negative press of late, it's been the in-thing to say it's a linear story with exceedingly bland gameplay for a long while now. Spike TV is more of an XBox/PC-friendly channel rather than a J-friendly one so it's no surprise Final Fantasy gets no love.

Last year a Japanese guy did show up to accept an award... for RE4 I think. It was one of the few reputable parts of the show. :P But yeah you're right.

I'm still reeling from the fact that Mortal Kombat beat out both Tekken and SF Alpha col for Fighting GOTY, hell, even DOA is better than the ultra casual and broken MKA.
(please note that I would have given that award to the Live Arcade release of SF2HF, so my opinion probably wouldn't gel with the Spike TV audience.)

It could be that Japanese games didn't get much love because they're pretty sh!tty overall. I mean when the heavy hitters are FF and MGS 2 games that have sever gameplay problems who could blame anyone for being turned off toward them. I would give the Japanes Developer this though they still do 3rd person action/fighting games better than anyone on the market.
I swear this has got to be the gayest thread ever. A bunch of "men" saying that Spike t.v. isn't geared toward them. What the hell do you guys play games for? Seriously are sitting there trying to have emotional connections to videogames?!?!

Yeah you're right, we're a bunch of "men" saying that Spike TV isn't geared towards us, since obviously the Video Game Awards Show is the only thing Spike TV ever shows.
And Japanese games suck? Seriously? I bet you smoke some top-shelf crack.
Who makes the best RPGs? Japan. Who makes the best third-person action games? Japan? Who makes the best weird/fun/interesting games? Japan. Who makes the most successful consoles? Japan. Who makes the best fighting games? Japan. Who makes the best arcade games? Japan.
But it's understandable, I guess. When all you play is Xbox you're not privy to these AAA titles.

I own all 4 last gen consoles (counting DC) And two of this Gen consoles (actually the Wii is for the Wife and daughter and won't be opened till christmas but you get my point) I have a decent PC and I play a lot of games (too many actually) and basically Overall games that come out of Japan are inferior to there counter parts.
They are always behind in technology (except for Polophny Digital) in there games. They stick to the same antique gameplay premises. Come on handicapping your control in Survivor Horror to make a game scarier and enemies deadlier? How about better level design and enemy A.I. turn based RPG's I can't believe they are still making this game. This poor exuse of a translation of traditional D&D (and yes that's where Jrpg's got there start).
Bottom line it's an opinion who makes the best games. My point was that the crying and whining in this thread had a real feminine aspect to it.

Crying and whining about other people's crying and whining doesn't have a feminine aspect?
Most innovative games came out of Japan, not U.S. Games like Guitaro Man, Elite Game Agents, and some other I can't think from the top of head right now. Japanese have found more ways to play games than any other country/race/spieces on Earth. In your case, you just want a bigger and more powerful console that is able to display bigger maps and have more calculating powers for AIs. No wonder you own a Xbox360. Isn't that what it does EXACTLY?

Gears Of War was nominated for mass awards and damn near won Game Of The Year as well. Perhaps you are a bit salty because Resistance:Fall Of Man for the PS3 wasnt even nominated? Imagine that.
Plus once again Final Fantasy got snubbed.I think its safe to say that Final Fantasy series needs an enema in order to win RPG of the year in the future. Theres always next years Spike VGA show. Keep hope alive:D

Precisely. There's a lot of pro-US sentiment here so really it's no surprise not to see the Japanese equation doing well.
They are always behind in technology (except for Polophny Digital) in there games. They stick to the same antique gameplay premises.
That's been a given. I've always argued PC games are leagues ahead of Japanese games technically. But weren't you XBots just a few weeks ago mulling over how "it's about the games and not the technology" after we showed you that the PS3 trounced the XBox 360 in tech? Sheesh. Talk about opportunistic, self-serving arguments.
Come on handicapping your control in Survivor Horror to make a game scarier and enemies deadlier? How about better level design and enemy A.I.
Come on, handicapping your FPS games by playing them with gamepads? You're one to talk about better AI and level design when your precious thumbstick forces your devs to dumb down the AI and the level design just so you can survive.

Man you think anyone takes these awards seriously? Most of the awards probably go to whoever pays Spike TV the most. I mean seriously... look at the Best RPG award. Oblivion beats out 3 JRPGs, each of which is miles ahead of Oblivion (in my opinion at least). Best Soundtrack to Oblivion? The game that had just one theme that is repeated over and over in different iterations? Best Studio goes to Epic? Hell, even Clover deserved it more than Epic. All they did was make a shooter. What's so ground-breaking about that?
You know, when GOW came out I loved it, but now the same thing is happening to it that happened to Halo...it's getting WAY overrated. That's why I hate the Xbox. Whenever one game comes out that's mildly good, it gets blown out of proportion, because it's usually the ONLY game worth getting on that system that fanboys go berserk.
It's ridiculous, really.

How can you call GOW and Halo overrated when its the gamers out there in the world thats saying loud and clearly that these games were in their eyes worthy of the title of being among the best of their respective genres? When games like these comes along they become the measuring stick of how the next crop of games of that genre should be patterned after. I dunno why you hate the Xbox so much. The Xbox is a great console. And the 360 is following in those footsteps.
Oblivion is a great RPG. Elder Scrolls has been around a long time. The other RPG's apparently didnt stand a chance.

Well Folken, when you check most videogame chatrooms which game is talked about the most? Gears Of War. When you turn on G4TV which game is shown the most? Gears Of War.
The bottom line here is that both Resistance and GOW are great games. But right now the momentum is clearly with Gears Of War. Even if Resistance did qualify to go up against GOW the result most likely would've been the same. The way the crowd reacted when GOW didnt win GOTY Resistance would not have stood a chance in winning anyway.

IMO Final Fantasy has been snubbed alot from most videogame awards is because nothing much has changed with each incarnation of the series. It always has gorgeous cut scenes, the same magics, and the same battle format. The only thing that changes is the time period and the characters. Other than that its basically the same thing over and over and over again.
Even though FF has been around longer it sure as hell hasnt been winning in the eyes of the gamers when award shows come about. I would love to see FF done like Knights Of The Old Republic by Bioware. Especially when it comes to the battle system. I want freedom during battles instead of standing there trading blows with the enemy. That was cool back during the Final Fantasy 7 days. But now after 13 its time to add something new and exciting to the series IMO.
As far as GOW goes? The way people views this game is basically a free for all. Most gamers believes this game is one of the best 3rd person shooters thats come along in a very long time.
Overrated? Judging by most of the reviews alot of gaming editors say this game is indeed one of the best of its kind. But to each his/ her own. I dont think GOW is overrated. Hell, the game sold over a million copies.Thats why GOW was one of the most beloved games during the Spike VGA's.
Resistance:Fall of Man didnt even sell that much.:p

Final Fantasy's battle system changes with each game and X2 was not turn based. By the most strict definition, 7 wasn't really turn based either. 12 plays like an MMOG. The entire game is overhauled every time. The only actual things that are the same are the magic spells, the title, and a guy named Cid.
Spike's show is fun to watch, but aside from you and Drunken, nobody else here seems takes it serious. But I guess it's a perfect show for an Xbot.

I never said that the Spike VGA's wasnt fun to watch. If you are a fan of videogames then this show is indeed for you. Take it actually seriously? Not really. Its nothing personal. When events like the Tokyo show or E3 comes around thats when gamers take everything said or seen during that time real serious.
Other than that shows like this is in fact fun to watch. Dont get it twisted, I love to see what gamers thinks is worthy of those awards they have selected for certain games.
Back to FF. Wouldnt you like to see a different battle system? Where a character can roam around during battle? That would be so cool. Plus I would like to see more Female lead characters in the FF series as well. Having a female cast in X-2 was okay. But I would like to see just more females as the lead character. And different magic attacks wouldnt hurt either.:(

Err... FF12 has a battle system where you can roam around during battle. Female leads though we won't be seeing outside of FFX-2.

I'm just saying that noone here is really hating on the show perse. Or as Drunken said, whining.
But back to FF... dude, the battle system is different every time. Like I said FF12 is made like a MMORPG. There's no transition to a battle screen, all your character's AI is totally programmable, all the fights take place in the actual environment. It was one of the biggest kudos and biggest complaints the game got. It's also hovering at around 93% on gamerankings.
I can go for more female leads in rpgs sure. As for the magic, essentially every rpg has basically the same stuff. Elemental magics, status effects, non element magic.... It's how they're implemented that makes it interesting and FF has had one of the best systems because of it's depth and the ability to counter and counter counter magic spells. Sure you could change it just to change it or call them something different but I don't think it wouldn't add anything to the game.
My biggest complaints about FF are
#1: mini games. They're tedious and boring and after completing the tedious and boring task, they have little payoff. I did like Tetra Master in 9 though. That was probably my fav.
#2: Secrets are so obscure sometimes, you can't find them without a guide.
#3: I think their storytelling has suffered. The presentation overshadows the writing. But that's being really nitpicky.
#4. Endings.. .sometimes they're great, and other times I'm left saying WTF? After spending 50+ hours with a game I need a nice payoff.

I dunno why you hate the Xbox so much. The Xbox is a great console. And the 360 is following in those footsteps.
I don't hate the Xbox per se, I hate Microsoft's handling of the Xbox, and how they'll ask their consumers to bend over in order to make a few bucks early. If not for 3rd party support for the Xbox, then mine would be dead. It sure as hell isn't Microsoft releasing the games for its system.

The awards are starting right now. I got nothing else to do at work. Well, maybe work. But that can wait, just to see some clips of games that I've already seen or played.
Anyone see the UFC fights before the VGAs? My hometown boy Diego Sanchez crunched Joe Diesel Riggs with a smash to his face, then a knee to his face. 19-0 baby!!!!! I still don't think he can hang with St. Pierre though.

Not only are they advertising alot more with the 360 but 3rd party support for the 360 is alot better than it was for the old Xbox. I mean knowing that games like Assassin's Creed, Grand Theft Auto, and Resident Evil is coming to the console is huge.
And the rumors of MGS4 coming to the 360 is still running wild. Could franchises like Final Fantasy, Virtual Fighter,Tekken, and Devil May Cry be far behind? Only time will tell.
Plus no more do Xbox owners has to endure crappy Pro wrestling games. Now that Smackdown vs. Raw is a part of the consoles librairy Xbots can finally rejoice.Plus I saw during the show that TNA has a wrestling game coming too. Sweet.
At this point if developmental woes becomes an issue there could be more multiplatform games that used to be labled as Sony exclusives. It could happen.
Getting back to the show. I watched a little bit of it last night. Samuel L. Jackson is a nut.(in the good sense) He got bleeped thoughout most of the show. But you can tell this guy is a gamer by the way he acts.Lots of hot chicks were on stage too.(thats all good)
Some of the games shown looked pretty damn good. Best clips was from Bioshock, MGS4, GOW, Oblivion, and a few others. Overall the show looked cool. Bioshock looked pretty good too. Thats a must buy whenever its released.

Bottom line it's an opinion who makes the best games. My point was that the crying and whining in this thread had a real feminine aspect to it.
Wow. Maybe you can pull a moody and make a sexist menstrual-cycle joke while you're at it. The guys here are "feminine" for critiquing the awards choices? What else do you do with an awards thread besides discuss where you agree or disagree with the choices?
Well, here's my "feminine" feedback: Nobuyuki Shimizu and Kemmei Adachi were ROBBED. Loco Roco was hands down the best song in its category.

Nah, that's not it at all. I don't agree with every choice of the academy awards but I don't diss it 'cause it actually has some legitimacy, unlike Spike's show. Noone said it was a bad show. Quite the opposite in my first post in which I said it's fun to watch. But the choices made on that show have little to do with actual opinion.
In 2005 50 Cent Bullet Proof was a best action game nominee along with God of War and Resident Evil. Yeah..... they're in the same league all right. 50 Cent was popular, hiphop is a big part of the show and that's why his game got nominated and that ultimately is what the show is about. Flash and glitz. Not the technical or artistic merit of games. So the show is ok or what it is, but taking it as a serious award show is just laughable. Maybe one day.

I thought GSP was in a higher weight class. Or is Sanchez a middleweight? I forget. Pulver sucks now!

I like watching the UFC from time to time. I miss the good ole days with Dan Severn, Ken Shamrock, and the Gracies. Chuck Lindell and Tito Ortiz are two bad asses too. I remember when I played the first UFC game on the Dreamcast. Cool game. They need another UFC game for next gen consoles.

Sanchez is a middle like GSP, and GSP would hand him his ass on a platter if Diego tried to take him on right now. Really, Diego doesn't seem in the same league of fighters like GSP, Hughes, Ortiz, or even people like Forrest Griffin, who's a tuff little joo. But I have to support my local teams/athletes, so I'll always root for Diego. The fight with Riggs was wack. They both went in and connected with solid right straights to the face, and Riggs fell down, but when he tried to get up, Diego kneed him in the face, and it was over. The punch from Riggs stunned the crap out of Diego, who looked kind of lost after the fight was over.
I miss the good ole days with Dan Severn, Ken Shamrock, and the Gracies. Those were the days, before they had weight classes and when the allowed goin shots and kicks to the face on a downed opponent.Oleg Taktorv, Tank Abbot, Severn, Gracie, Shamrock, Kimo, his fat coach that got punched in the nuts 7 times, Marco Ruas, Don Frye, and Big Daddy Goodridge. Back in the day when themes were David vs Goliath, and one guys fought up to four fights in one evening. good times.

I didn't watch the show, I don't watch TV and even if I did, I don't have Spike TV.
Chuck Liddell is currently a bad-ass but he's got nothing on Mirko Crocop. He's just lucky that the LHW division in the UFC is full of pansies.
Ortiz is a guy who is currently not worth much right now, who had a so-so championship run back in the day mostly because the stiffest competition he ever had to go against was Evan Tanner.
Riggs needs to stop going to the lighter divisions, is he too scared to fight in the heavier weight classes? Can't imagine why, heavyweight division is up for grabs seeing as their are like only 3 people in it worth anything. Going down in weight like that has to be hell on his body and it has to sap his strength and stamina, no matter how good his dietician is.
As for "the days" I loved how back in the day the game really was more like Mixed Martial Arts because you still had say Kick Boxers fighting Judokas and things like that, unlike today where everyone knows everything. Today's competitors are far more complete and far far more skilled (just take a look at the Gracies who aren't winning diddly squat anymore).
I hate UFC nowadays, the competition is just not as good as in other federations such as Pride, and the rules are just crappy after the Nevada State Athletic peeps banned knees and kicks to downed opponents, wtf is up with that? I prefer Japanese rules where you can stomp 'em to kingdom come (go Shogun!)
And Fedor would clean out anyone in the UFC, no exceptions! :D
As for Bioshock, that's something I've been looking forward to since last last year! I hope they finally release it this year. A sequel to SS2 has been a LONG time coming.
