View Full Version : Sony exec: Wii is more fun

Sony's Australian general manager, while attempting to bash the Wii for providing only a subset of what the Ps3 of offers (the Wii only offers gaming, while the Ps3 offers that and more) he let this gem of a quote slip out:
"Wii is a core gaming device. It's a more fun, intuitive sort of product to pick up, where the PS3 is a broader entertainment solution; so you can have your fun, enjoyable gaming ... but then you have a whole suite of other applications ... such as Blu-ray media playback, "
http://wii.ign.com/articles/749/749026p1.html
Personally, when it comes to gaming, I want to have "more fun." I guess Waco was right: Sony just wants to sell movies.

Oh please, don't take it out of context. You probably just did a rough transliteration of the IGN article too, which was also taken out of context.
He didn't mean it's "more fun", he meant it's "more of a fun, intuitive product" rather than "a broader entertainment solution".
God I hate when the media take quotes and twist them around to try to make a point.

but that doesn't sound the least bit better in my opinion, not really. This is just another foot in mouth Sony Corp henchman, soon to be unemployed.

You should also notice that he left out the 360, possibly pointing out that the consumer should pick up the Wii and and PS3.

Because the PS3 and 360 are in competition, unlike the Wii, who is its own.

"It's [more of] a <strike>more</strike> fun, intuitive sort of product to pick up."
That's probably what he meant to say. I don't see it as a Freudian slip.

You can rephrase what he "meant" all you want, it doesn't change what he actually said. And what he said was hilarious. Did he mean it? Was it a freudian slip, or just simply mispoke? Who knows. For all you know, maybe the guy has played both, and actually thinks the Wii is "more fun" but that "fun" is only a subset of all the things the Ps3 can give you.

Well, let's think about it. You take Fifth Element or Black Hawk Down, you already have the hd tranfers done, you encode em, slap em on booray discs and charge $30 a pop. Your investment here is bascially next to nothing.
Compare that to a game, where you have to recoup all your development expense, extensive marketing campaigns, etc. You can lose your shirt on these games if they stiff. And sony has had a lot of stiffs lately. Getaway sold very well, Getaway Black Monday sold like ass. The jak and daxter games and the ratchet and clank games have seen diminishing returns. Mark of Kri had a three year dev cycle and bombed big time.
Games are risky projects, movie on booray is a no-brainer, there's no investment here, its already been recouped before the films ever reach booray. Sony owns two major movie studios, lots of product to regurgitate and resell for the zillionth time. Not to mention selling tv series like Seinfeld all over again on booray. This is where the no risk money is made.
Sony is also a very political animal with lots of infighting and factions warring among themselves. Japan doesn't see eye to eye with NA and vice versa. At some point, just like Nintendo has done, somebody higher up is going to cut the purse strings and ask why we're spending all this money on developing projects that seem to go nowhere. If Killzone bombs and I think its got a great chance to be a big fizzle, heads will roll. Someone's going to take a fall. How long can you keep backing losers and second rate developers. Who the hell approved dreck like Untold Lengends and Genji 2 and NBA O7? I don't care if it is a launch, all those games are going to wind up not only losing money for sony but damaging the reputation of the ps3. You can't be a first rate gaming platform if you put out second rate crap.

So what? Peter Moore told the press at E3 the same thing about Wii. Doesn't mean squat.
Gaddy, you're actually starting to sound worse than the Xbots. It's like you're still not confident about your Wii purchase and are grasping at any straw to convince yourself that you made a good investment.
BTW, I notice you never answered my query about why you'd waste $8 on Ecco from the Virtua Console as opposed to just picking up the PS2 Genesis Hits disc that gives you Ecco, Ecco 2, Golden Axe (also $8) and twenty other games for $20.

I do think what the Sony exec said was pretty damned funny in a sys wars context though.

Over all, I'm not that impressed with the virtual console offerings. I'd also like to see the service provide new, original content the way XBLA arcade does. I'm not totally opposed to these companies copying good ideas. . . its just when your company becomes totally composed of copying that it starts to look really ludicrous.

Your investment here is bascially next to nothing.
Are you forgetting the billions they spent to develop the format in the first place? I wouldn't say that's exactly low-risk.
Sony owns two major movie studios, lots of product to regurgitate and resell for the zillionth time. Not to mention selling tv series like Seinfeld all over again on booray. This is where the no risk money is made.
It's funny, you Xbots (not you specifically Waco, but others in your camp) were praising MS for making the "smart business decision" to kill off the Xbox and release the 360, which is a pretty dick move on MS's part. Yet when Sony develops the Blu-ray format and puts it in PS3s to seed the market, you blame it for only thinking about money? Are you guys even listening to yourselves?

Hey, at least they're taking risks. You mentioned earlier in your posts that they were just going after no-risk money? Well here you're contradicting yourself. I'd rather Sony branch out and offer us a bunch of franchises, some of which will suck, and others that will be amazing. Without this willingness to take risks, we wouldn't have gotten games like the Ratchet and Clank series, or Jak and Daxter (just the first one...I didn't like the other two), or God of War, which was a blockbuster and an amazing game by anyone's standards. Hell, even Killzone, while not the awesome game it was billed to be, was quite entertaining.

Try thinking before posting. It helps. You know sweet fu#$ all about business and it shows. Sony churned out a bunch of crap sequels for the ps3 figuring SDF clowns would eat up sony slop, but even SDF members aren't that stupid. Sony thought they could get away with releasing rushed to market half baked crap like UT, Genji 2 and NBA 07 and nobody would notice the bad review scores and the $60 pricing. They were wrong. Sony thought they were taking a low risk strategy churning out this crap but it backfired, much like the entire ps3 launch in general.
MS had little to no choice but to bury the xbox. They didn't own the IP to the main chipsets and couldn't reduce the price of components any further. Gamers refused to pay any premium for a technically superior piece of hardware with a built in hdd. They had no choice but to move on.
Killzone was crap. If you thought that steaming pile was entertaining, then you're easily amused. Also, you don't know your videogaming history very well. Ratchet and Clank and Jak and Daxter came about, because sony lost the licences to spryo the dragon and crash bandicoot, so taking a risk had nothing to do with Insomniac and Naughty Dog moving on to new franchises. They had no choice in the matter.

Currently Folken the Wii and the 360 is selling better than the PS3. The numbers are in Capt.Sony. Hell, the guy probably cant get a PS3 himself (along with half of America)so he had to go buy a Wii to amuse himself. Can you blame him for giving the Wii its props? :blush2: (sarcasm)

How in the sweet cream on a ice cream sandwhich do you figure that Zilla Man? Wii owners get to play Zelda from day one. Other than Resistance: Fall of Man whats left for the PS3's launch titles? Nada. Paying just under $400 dollars for a brand new console, an extra joystick, and a brand new Zelda game to play IMO is a good investment.

Sony thought they could get away with releasing rushed to market half baked crap like UT, Genji 2 and NBA 07 and nobody would notice the bad review scores and the $60 pricing. They were wrong.
Are you seriously trying to tell me that the 360 is filled to the brim with unique titles? In the year it's been released the majority of its titles have as much diversity as those mind-farts of yours that you call posts. The only titles you could call unique are Viva Pinata and Dead Rising, so stop spewing that crap and thinking people are gonna take it.
MS had little to no choice but to bury the xbox. They didn't own the IP to the main chipsets and couldn't reduce the price of components any further.
So now you're defending MS's idiocy? That's...just like you, really. MS was retarded not to look forward, and they did the same thing with the 360.
Gamers refused to pay any premium for a technically superior piece of hardware with a built in hdd.
You mean the 360?
Face it, the 360 was horribly designed, right after the Xbox was horribly killed off. And you bought that steaming pile of crap and happily stuck your face in it and started munching. Say what you will about MS, THEY KILLED OFF THE XBOX WITH NO CONSIDERATION FOR THEIR CONSUMERS. I don't give a flying f*** what the deal was between them and their suppliers, or if it was a smart business decision. The fact remains, THEY KILLED OFF THE XBOX WITH NO CONSIDERATION FOR THEIR CONSUMERS. You must have the IQ of a lamppost if you think that's good business strategy, and even worse, if you actually had no problem with it.

Yeah, Gaddy, it's so "trivial" that Nintendo's CEO has had to issue a statement about it:

Nintendo to Probe Strapgate
The company looks into possible causes of Wii-related accidents
by Micah Seff
"December 7, 2006 - Finally, an official response to countless reports of accidents involving jubilant gamers' loose grip on the Wii's remote controller has come out of Nintendo. During a recent meeting with the Foreign Correspondents Club of Japan, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata vowed to launch an investigation into the possibility of faulty wrist straps.
Some consumers who have received the brunt of these accidents have claimed that the wrist strap which is included with the controller works itself loose. As a result, the controller has been known to slip out of gamers' hands and cause damage."

So you had to go all the way to an Australian newspaper to try and dig up something that most System Wars readers know has no effect on system sales? Are you dissing Australia there? I checked Australian news regarding the Australian launch; global sales are a part of "the war." I don't really think this kind of thing really affects sales much, but it was a top Australian Sony excecutive trying to take some fuel out of the Wii launch (since PS3 can't "get it up" for a global launch). . .so apparently Sony thinks it can say something that might "affect system sales." And what he said was, in effect, "Nintendo is more fun, but. . . ."
Surely you can agree the Sony exec in question probably did not achieve his goal of persuading any gamers that they should skip a Wii and KEEP WAITING for a Ps3?

Hey, you're right. A couple days later, and the story is getting a LOT more play than I ever would have thought. And you know what? It is not my bias speaking when I say this is A GOOD THING FOR NINTENDO. Have you seen the network news clips for this story? They ALL have been showing gamers playing Wii sports having an insanely good time, and they all quote Nintendo "We didn't anticipate gamers playing so enthusiastically." You can't freaking BUY that kind of PR. . .a game system so damn fun people are breaking the wrist straps? That's exactly how that story is coming across on the screen, and I guarantee you its gonna make people hear about the system who don't follow gaming news sights or magazines, and its gonna make them curious.

It's a fact that Ps3 has been outsold, but it sold every unit manufactured. It is only relevant as a fact in that it shows Sony is having production problems. As far as "system wars" the "fact" does not prove Sony's Ps3 wouldn't be outselling the 360 or Wii if there were more systems available. We won't know that until next year.

Well, they have still been releasing a few games on the XBOX like MK Arm, Family Guy, DDRUltramix 4, Capcom Classics, Justice League Heroes, THP8, Resevoir Dogs, Scarface, a shmup or two, and Need for Speed Carbon the past 2 months-ish, none which appear on the Gamecube. Probably a few more too, I just can't think of them. Sure, they can all be played on the PS2 also, but still, XBOX owners aren't left totally in the dust, and all XBOX Live games are still supported, so that in itself adds an extra bit of legs to them. The ones that are online, anyways.
The Cube is just lucky that it's Getting TP, since they cancelled Super Paper Mario for it. Other than that and Anime-inspired fighting games, the Cube has nothing.

You really didn't read Gadfly's last post, did you?:blush2:
I know you didn't. because you're making the same mistake with his post that you did with mine.
How exactly is Gadfly defending Sony?
Your own post is also full of contradictions/misinformation:
So you're asserting that Xbox owners have titles to play while PS2 owners don't? MS pulled the plug on the Xbox over a year ago and the platform is no longer supported by major publishers. PS2, on the other hand, is still going strong -- not only in sales but publisher support as well. How does that make Sony "not that bright"?
My God, NEO, do you ever actually think before you post?:blush2: Gadfly and I have both politely tried to help you (even after you've insulted us) and point out your mistakes but you really do seem hopeless.:mad2:
Okay, lets talk to where even you can understand Zilla Man. First off I didnt say Gadfly was defending anyone. Thats the way you took the direction of what I was saying. Once again you're assuming. And you were once again wrong.
2nd of all Xbox owners still has Xbox live to keep them busy. Which is a huge sucess over Playstation online. Just in October you still had over 24,000 plus still playing Halo 2 online. So who cares if the PS2 is still getting games over the Xbox? Right now the Xbox 360 is the way to go if you're in pursuit of more games to play.
What I meant by saying Sony wasnt that bright was so far there are more great games coming for the PS2 than the PS3 for the next 3-5 months. People will be trying to buy PS3's but buying PS2 games.
Thats all I hear is people talking about how great the PS3 is from a hardware perspective but they sure as hell isnt buying PS3 games! The PS2 has a better list of upcoming titles for the next 3-5 months than the PS3 does. If Sony pulled the plug on the PS2 and forced gamers toward the PS3 sooner the console sales may soar even higher. But thats simply a theory.
You and Gadfly is trying to help me? LOL! Thats a good one. Theres a Grizzy in the woods that needs help too. Go find it. And make sure you carry a big mouth Bass in your mouth when you do

I was wrong? You never said Gadfly was defending anyone, huh? Then where did this quote come from?
Um..currently the 360 and the Wii is outselling the PS3. I guess that means you're currently defending Sony's idiocy huh? Yep
That's from your earlier post. So how was I "assuming" by reading that?
So who cares if the PS2 is still getting games over the Xbox? Right now the Xbox 360 is the way to go if you're in pursuit of more games to play.
The PS2 has over 1000 games in its library. The 360 has less tahn a quarter of that. So how is the 360 the way to go if you want more games to play? Seriously, I'd love to hear your explanation for that.

The reply I said to Gadfly was me being sarcastic. I said I guess that makes you defending Sony's idiotcy. That wasnt a flat out accusation. And yes you were assuming you knew where I was coming from. Plus you didnt understand once again what I was saying about the PS2 and the 360. So let me once again break it down to ya.
The Xbox console indeed is about DONE. But the Xbox 360 is the future. And there are alot of upcoming titles thats going to make the 360 one of the main consoles to own in 2007. So if you want to jump into a great next gen console the 360 is the way to go.Especially if you cant get your hands on a PS3 anytime soon.
The PS2 still has alot of great games to offer in the next 4-6 months. I've been saying that. The PS2 will sell more games thanthe PS3 will for quite awhile.
Most of the AAA titles that will make the PS3 famous in 2007 wont be heard from until late 2007. Nobody here is comparing the PS2's librairy to the 360's. What you been smoking?

But yet leave it to you to piss on all of that with your *****in and moaning about how I drag the place down.
I'm not the pot calling the kettle anything; you called yourself out.
Look, it was the way you runs your mouth (grammatically speaking) and the screen name you chose for yourself that clued several of us in--on your first post back--that you were a certain abhored and banned member rising back up like a zombie whose head we forgot to chop off. But I didn't "b!tch and moan" about you being back or start harrassing you or trying to pick fights--I'm a fair guy and believe in second chances, as well as seventh and ninth chances.
I think you realize you are up to your old tricks and that's why you are pissing people off. And you KNOW what those old tricks are--obviously--because the first few months of your return you cut that crap out, as though you'd learned your lesson. I don't want to start up any old battles. Just be cool, think before you post, actually read and listen, and don't post every single thought you have. I know you can do it, because you have mostly been keeping it together since your return.
It's okay to reread what you've just written first, realize its dumb as hell, and then delete it without hitting "submit reply." We all occasionally make dumb posts, but you are doing it all the time now, whereas you weren't until recently.
And don't reply to this post. Just read it and think about it. Deal?

I'm not up to my old tricks at all.Having a little fun with you guys Yes.Trying to raise the roof up in here? No. You and Zilla Man are the two screaming foul the loudest here. I'm just having fun talking about consoles and games.
You and Zilla Man are the ones turning all this into a straight up Soap Opera all over again. Calling me names and bringing up the past has been the MO for you two partna.:p
We are supposed to be talking about Sony execs talking about the Wii being fun. We're supposed to be making fun of that on this thread.
Instead we have to sit and listen to you and Zilla Man do your"Days Of Our Lives" speeches about how I am making your lives so miserable by my antics.
The only lesson learned here judging by the way you guys are throwing stones from your glass houses is that: People often fear what they dont understand.Apparently you and Zilla Man are running scared.
If you werent you wouldnt be threatening to hide behind ignore list.(Poultry in motion) I'm here talking about the positives and the negatives of the videogame world. Whats your excuse for doing the opposite.
Just sit and think about that for a moment. After you do that I got a proposition for you. Stop the biatching and the crying and the moaning and just talk about games and consoles and leave the drama for daytime television.
In return I'll stick to the threads and nothing else.In the words of Howie Mandel: Deal Or No Deal?

Rumor Control
Nintendo falling short of US Wii targets? Source: Straight from the horse's mouth...an official correction in a Nintendo press release.
The official story: Nintendo could not be reached for comment as of press time.
What we heard: When talking about the two recently released gaming consoles, Nintendo's Wii is largely regarded to be plentiful when compared to the scarce PlayStation 3. Even though Nintendo's console has sold out across the United States, gamers have found that getting a Wii has been much easier than purchasing one of Sony's new consoles.
Nintendo reported that 600,000 Wiis were sold in "the Americas" in its first eight days in retail, with almost half a million being sold in the United States. Shortly after the Wii's launch, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime said Nintendo was on target to ship 4 million Wiis worldwide by the end of the year.
Yesterday, Nintendo sent out a press release touting the sales success of Nintendo hardware in November, saying that of the 3.9 million systems sold in the US in the month, 2.1 million (55 percent) carried the Nintendo brand.
The press release also carried the statement, "Despite spot shortages in some locations, well more than a million Wii systems will be available in the United States by the end of the year."
For those gamers still waiting to get a Wii for the holidays, well over a million Wiis is indeed good tidings. Unfortunately, Nintendo may accidentally be playing the role of Grinch.
About four hours after the initial press release hit the wires, Nintendo sent out an updated version with one major correction. In the head of the updated release from Nintendo's PR agency, a correction reads, "...we are advised [by Nintendo] that the fourth paragraph, last sentence which reads, 'Despite spot shortages in some locations, well more than a million Wii systems will be available in the United States by the end of the year,' should be disregarded. (Emphasis added.)
Two days after launch, Fils-Aime told Reuters that approximately 2 million Wiis would be available in the US by early January, with 1 million available in early December. But with yesterday's updated release, Nintendo doesn't seem too sure about that number.
Yesterday's European launch (remember--they don't get the PS3 until spring 2007) and last week's Japanese launch may be bad for American gamers. Nintendo could be feeling a pinch on supply and may be moving some units destined for the US over to those regions.
On the other hand, Nintendo could simply be covering its bases, not wanting to promise something it can't deliver in light of the incredibly high demand for the console.
Bogus or not bogus?: It's still speculative, but also very fishy. Rumor Control will abstain until we hear back from Nintendo.

Gaddy didn't call it. If you know Moody, then you know when he's around. I remember he got called out when he was ALPHA MALE, and he ended up getting booted again. When he first came on as NEO, a few comparisons were made to The Game(using words like indeed, Haterade, and other moody-isms), but he denied everything, and since he was rather normal-ish, the thoughts of it being Evolution drifted into the wind like a fart. Now he's back in full-force, and he seems to be on his usual path to wherever Moody's end up eventually. I personally don't want to see the joo get banned again, because we all make the occasional stupid/ignorant post, and it's all just for BSing anyways. And it's funny reading some of his posts, and then reading some other posts towards him.
For a time there, I thought Waco was gonna get banned, as he seemed more rough that what Moody had done to get banned. Maybe Waco didn't get on enough nerves like he wanted.
Funny stuff, when you're outside, looking in.

Nope. Gamer from 78 used to go under the names AOE Enforcer and Cyberdine 101. He and I have gone round and round many times over the years. Kinda personal. But I've grown up a ton since then. Yeah I still have fun here and there but I'm not the hellraiser I used to be. Back when I was under The Game username I caused my fair share of anarchy and chaos. What truly annoys me though is when I tell someone I still enjoy gaming and they turn around and tell me ... <i>but playing video games is such an immature passtime !</i> Aaaaack ! Guess some people will never get accostumed to the fact that video games cater to all ages and tastes.
