Playstation 3
So there I was standing inside EB games on Friday morning. Chat with the store manager for a few and then there she is, my PS3 (60 gig) sitting there. So I drop my money down on it with a copy of R:FoM and a free copy of Talladega Nights packed inside.
So I get home crash 'till 3pm and then call up some friends to see it. I just bought an LCD High def the day before. I fire up my PS3 and bam; it goes to the set up mode. A few minutes later it's set for optimal sound and visuals.
My Impressions:
The System: The System is nice to look at, really shiny (Like PSP) Playstation 3 marking the midsection in "Spiderman" font style. I like the way it looks laying down rather than standing for some reason.
I'll admit that the System startup is nothing spectacular, 360's startup is very impressive, PS3 is just a wavy line and music that sounds like an Orchestra preparing for the evening event.
The Gui (Graphical User Interface) is similar in every way to what's on PSP.
This system seems pretty easy to use overall. The Wireless controllers are light and with Blue tooth tech under the hood. The accuracy is astounding. Like 360 and Way, you can turn the system on and off, reset the game or return to the PS3 menu.
The PS3 is a very quiet system, the odd time you can hear the disc reading or the fans but nothing that will attract your attention to it. The System blows some heat but nothing that would make you worry.
Resistance: This is a decent game, mind you the levels are short and leave you wanting more. The game is solid...and difficult. You have your basic FPS style Controls (Primary, Secondary, and grenades, along with a some cool six axis features.
"Fall of Man" doesn't compare to the likes of Gears of War or GRAW but still offers some very impressive Audio (5.1 DD) and Visuals (720p)...Co-op mode= good times.
Overall, I would say this game is a hybrid Half Life 2 meets Call of duty but in all honesty, I would rather play those two. I'll have to finish this game to base fair judgment.
Call of Duty 3: WOW, I love this game. I just cleared COD 2 and this is a great follow up. The game engine is very impressive, Normal Mapping...eek: I just can't explain how awesome this game looks. Sound effects are all in 5.1 DD
The Controls are very similar to the last 2 entries, except for one small detail....Sixaxis......you have a choice here. For Melee attacks you can either press a button, or use the Sixaxis by rotating your controller in the same fashion you would if you were holding an actual rifle.
So far I've tried out some PS1 and PS2 games and they all work. Game Saves are all on the HD.
Sorry but haven't had much chance to check out the Blue Ray Movies but from what I've seen thus far leaves me to believe that we are in for a real treat.
I'm both very impressed and happy with my new PS3. There isn't too much to choose from in terms of games but that will change soon.

Glad to know you scored one, Ocelot! What kind of freebies come on the HDD?
Also about COD3. I want that game. After I beat GOW.

Nothing....absolutely nothing. Mind you I really haven't had a chance to look around and find everything. I'll keep you posted.

Thanks for the impressions of the two systems.
I'm especially interested in hearing about how the horseback based combat works, when you get to that.
There's not a Wii to be found where I live. It's actually probably good I didn't get one yet. I finally finished Okami last night, which I really wanted to do before I started Zelda.
Another question; on b/c. Is there a way to transfer your GC game-saves to the Wii? I just realized how essential that is; otherwise, I'm gonna have to keep my GC.

You can open the top of the Wii to gain access to 4 GC controller ports and 2 GC memcard ports. My saves for Luigis mansion seemed to show up no problem with the memcards inserted.
As far as transferring data from the mem cards to the Wii internal flash? I haven't had a chance to sit down and really plunge into the menu. I'll keep you posted.

Not a Wii, PS3 or 360 to be found anywhere here, either. Though I can probably find a 360 if I look hard enough.
What I need is COD3 on the PC. That looks quite a ways off, though...

Gamestop claims they've been resupplied already with ps3s and wiis. I have to laugh, though, with the ps3 its like sony is delivering the extra systems they cut from their original allocations of 8 per store. In my area, both Futureshop and Best Buy Canada are saying they'll have a second shipment of wiis on Friday.
You don't want COD3, its a buggy mess of a game. Its a blonde, great looking but in a battle of wits between the AI and a brick, I'd bet on the brick.

That's awesome Ocelot, grats on those systems.
A question I have though: both Sony and Nintendo stated their systems would be region-free, i.e. you can play NTSC-US, NTSC-J, and PAL games on any system worldwide. It might be difficult to ascertain this if you don't have any Japanese or PAL games, but is there any indication that this is true?
If so, then the only real thing I have to look at is what region DVDs the PS3 plays in order to make my decision.

Hey Jupes, how's COD3 going? Waco says it's broken. Well I guess all the more reason to wait for the PC version.

No problems thus far. Game runs at a steady 30fps and the visuals are a step up from last years entry. COD3 seems to have been built with the Sixaxis in mind...or at least the PS3 version was. When you fight a Nazi, drive a jeep, boat or even twist fuze into a bomb you need to manipulate the Sixaxis.
My gripes about the game are that the difficulty seems easier and it doesn't seem like you have quite as much freedom as you did with part two. Jumping out of windows seems to be missing....so far.
I guess it's an even trade off.

Is the PS3 region-locked?
Technically speaking, yes, though Sony has said that it doesn't plan on region-locking games. It's possible that third-party developers may choose to do so, in which case they'll flag the disc as so in software, but it sounds like most games will be region-free. Movies, however, will be region-specific.
Personally, I have no PAL movies or japanese imports to try out, but I'll see what else I can find.

Yeah I saw that IGN quote. Still, I haven't seen any proof of someone playing a PAL or Japanese game on an American system, so I'll have to wait for that.

Speaking of CoD3. Have you, or are you going to, try the Wii version? I was wondering how vastly different the graphics are and if the gameplay manages to make up for that at all. And also, as an early title, if they did a poor job with the controls the way Ubisoft did with Red Steel.

I plan on trying the Wii version soon, but from what I hear the control scheme is solid for the Wii offering PC like controls. Graphically I hear it offers visuals similar to the earlier GC and Xbox builds of the COD series. Gameplay vs. Visuals in this case.

I have no idea why COD3 for the Wii is not online. . .it is completely easy to get the Wii online with its built in Wifi. I would have actually bought COD3 for it. . . since it's the only actual full-fledge game besides Zelda right now. . .but it feels like a rip to pay the same for a game that is missing features available on every other version of the game.

but it feels like a rip to pay the same for a game that is missing features available on every other version of the game. Welcome to EA's world on the 360. Micro-transactions is where it's at for them. I ain't buying it. Uniforms and stadiums that come free on current gen versions of Madden and eventually other games shouldn't be taxed for us 360 owners.
Is Far Cry for the Wii going to be online? It better be. And it better have a map editor.

I don't think it will be. This is gonna be just like DS. No online for the first few months. . . for whatever reason.
It's like this, there were two Nintendo first party titles and 1 third party title ready for the premiere of DS Online. I'm guessing they are going to try and target a big first party title (Metroid Corruption or SSBB) to be the first online Wii title. The online tools for Wii, I think they were probably delivered to third parties late on purpose. But it does ensure a large first day online roll-out with lots of fanfare. It becomes almost another "launch event" after the real launch. . . the launch of their Wii Online Gaming Service. Smart business, sucky for us wanting it NOW.
Whatever Wii is gonna deliver, it's not gonna be until next year. Not having ANY online gaming experience ready to go Day 1 is just freaking weak. It was easier to excuse last gen, but not any more. Not when Nintendo's own handheld is host to some really cool wireless online gaming.

Sounds good. Makes you wonder though for the next 4-5 months will more hits be coming for the PS3 or the PS2? I mean since MGS4, DMC4,and RE4 wont be seen for quite a while it makes me wonder should Sony stop making games for the PS2 and concentrate solely on the PS3? Since there are still great games coming out for the PS2 not to mention GOW2 will be out in about 3 months as well. Food for thought. Other than that I'm glad you are enjoying your PS3 Ocelot.

Thanx, it's pretty good so far. I haven't really had a whole lot of time to play it much. But I'm with you as far as thier hit games are concerned. I've wondered the very same thing. I think Sony will push out whatever they have currently in development and then push the big PS3 guns out the door. Leaving mostly 3rd parties to tie up loose ends.

It's actually pretty smart on Sony's part so continue to support the PS2 so strongly. The fastest selling console right now is the PS2, and with games like FFXII and God of War 2, not to mention its back-catalogue of hits (MGS2, MGS3, GOW, RE4, DMC3, FFX, etc...) you can be sure it's going to continue outselling the 360 for a while.
