View Full Version : Computer monitor for PS3?

I am planning to buy PS3 sometime in the coming year, but here is my question. I would have to buy a TV to play the PS3, since I don't have a TV set at university. Now with my budget, I would probably not get something too big or HDTV-enabled. So would it be possible (and cheaper) to just get a somewhat large TFT computer monitor? It would be a helluva lot cheaper than buying an HDTV, and it would support 720i/p and 1080i/p.

Am I on the right track, or is there something that I'm missing?

Well I'm not sure if this is what you're going to want to do, but this is what I do with my PS2 and Gamecube. I'm in college too. Since I don't have a T.V. I looked online and found VGA adapters which will hook your video feed from whatever console you have to the monitor. I'm sure you probably already know this. The only problem with my solution is the best video you'll recieve is S-Video. Granted S-Video is a hell of a lot better than composite.

However I do know of an upperclassman here who has a big azz monitor that takes up his whole desk. Looks as if it would support HD too. I'll go ask him about and how much it was. I'm pretty sure that monitor he has though is probably out of your price range.

I would go with VGA adapter if you don't mind being too stingy on the picture quality you'll recieve. I mean the S-Video is alot better than composite, but it's no HD

Yeah my friend used to use one of those. Is it sort of like a box thing that you connect your console to, and then there are wires that go from that box to the monitor?

What I was thinking actually was just a regular flat-screen TFT monitor with a DVI connection. Thing is, I don't know if PS3 supports DVI connections.

I read somewhere in the SySWars thread that the PS3 can support the HDMI to DVI jack to go directly to DVI. THen you hold the power for 5 seconds or something like that. Try to look for it in the SysWars forum. No clue what thread I read it in though.

It seems like the PS3 is becoming more of a PC than a videogame console. And just think:most xbox haters accused MS of the same crime years ago when there was talk of computer components possibly coming for the Xbox. Imagine that.:aureola:

We're talking about hooking up the PS3 (or any console for that matter) up to a monitor because of lack of T.V. and you just randomly make a post about the PS3 being like a PC. You don't see us coming into the Xbox forums talking crap about the xbox and it's games when you guys are having good discussion. I'd argue with you, but this isn't the place for that.

Your reply has nothing to do with this thread, and nothing to do with this forum. Stick with the System Wars for that kind of post, thats what it's for.

He needs help. That's all there is to it.

I think there is a TV/Monitor coming out this black friday at bestbuy. It's westing house, 32 inches. It's only 500 bucks.

I actually found that LCD monitors aren't all that expensive, and have HD. I might wait a year or so until the great games come out before buying one. 32" LCD should be a lot cheaper then.

I have a Gateway FPD2185W 21 inch 16:10 widescreen LCD, and it has ports for composite, S-Video, and HDMI. It also supposedly has complete HD 1080p support (even though the monitor's native resolution is 1680x1050). I've been using it for a few months now, and it's a more than decent monitor.

With tax and all, it cost me about $550.

We already know the PS3 is gonna be a PC, Kutaragi told us that himself.

The issue with the XBox wasn't that it was trying to be a PC, the issue with the XBox was that its software library was a just a small representation of the PC game library, with nary a title to its own credit.

That said, this thread isn't even about making the PS3 a PC. It's just about hooking a PS3 to a Monitor. I'm probably going to look for something like what you have, Renz. I saw a monitor here for 50,000PHP (around $1000 US) that's a 27" HDTV but I think it only goes up to 1080i. A bit expensive; if I can find a nicer LCD monitor I'll get that instead.

I still really hope to use mouse and keyboard for PS3 games, would be a shame not to play something like Resistance with a mouse.

Hmm sounds interesting Renz. For now I figure I'll stay with standard def, since the games don't exactly look like ass on normal TVs. In a year or a little less though, prices should really come down.

That's steep as hell for a 27 inch, Mochan. I know someone that has a 52'' 1080i DLP, and he grabbed his set for just 500 more.

Ilnadmy, you don't have to go ultra expensive to get high def. I know Best Buy had a deal on a 27'' 720p widescreen CRT for $400ish about a year ago. I'm willing to bet it's gone down in price a bit since then, too.

I've got a fairly crap TV, but a really nice monitor, so I finally decided to take the plunge and hook my PS2 through it. (http://users.chartertn.net/greymatt/okami_lcd.jpg)

A bit of advice, don't go with compositet. If you go the monitor route, the first thing you should do is at least get S-video. Composite looked grainy, washed out, and made throw up in my mouth a little. The difference between it and S-video is night and day in quality.

I do have one problem, though. I can't get the widescreen games to go to the proper aspect ratio on the monitor. Right now it'll only let me do a slightly streched 4:3, and I can't stretch out the verticle and horizontal geometry to fit it to the screen the way I want. Maybe component will let me...I'll test it out if I can find component cables for the PS2.

I remember last year when I bought a VGA adapter to hook up my consoles to my PC monitors. Renz is definitely right, the S-Video and Composite cable differences are night and day

I'll probably look for an HDMI thing for the PS3. Of course, that might jack up the price a bit, but I don't know anything about these S-Video, Component, Composite wires, so I figure I'll stick with something I know will work.

This is my setup, Ive got a 22in gateway monitor its HD it has a dvi and vga, Ive got my PS3 hookedup via hdmi to dvi converter and my 360 is hooked up via the xbox vga hook up. It was 400 at bestbuy and i think its 1080i, they had a 19in for just 230. It looks awesome, better than on a 42in panasonic plasma.
