Found an online version of the PS3 user's guide. Maybe a good idea to read while waiting for your PS3 to arrive. Here's an interesting quote :

System Update

Software updates may include security patches, new or revised settings and features and other items, which will change your current operating system. It is recommended that you always maintain your system to use the latest version of the system software.

Update the PS3™ system software in either of the following ways:

* Update via Internet
* Update via Storage Media

Seems you must always have the latest OS version installed in order for your PS3 to operate in optimal fashion. Have fun reading while anticipating the planet's hottest NextGen system !

Anyhoo, here's The PS3 user's Manual. (http://manuals.playstation.net/document/en/ps3/current/)

I wasn't a fan of patches on 360 and I'm not a fan of them on PS3. This is the biggest flaw I see in the PS3. You immediately have to install the newest firmware if you want to play launch games. Hell, that's practically like releasing an unfinished product.

Just like the PSP. At least the 360 updates aren't required to play current games, they're mainly for improving functions and such. It's not so bad, though, when you will be able to install your updates straight from the game you're playing.

Why would they have to be constantly updating the PS3? To fight off modders and stuff?
