How does this CPU rate with todays standards??

Bane, the bulk of game processing occurs in the GPU. If you upgrade your 2800 to this I don't think it'll be that great a change, but still I think it would be great to have a dual core.

I think you'll notice benefits more in loading and in Windows, not too much in framerate increases.

Ya well i cant keep this card anyways i have an agp right now.If i get that id be getting a geforce 7950 512 mb card.seen a barebones kit for like $400 which includes the cpu/mobo/tower and power supply i already have 2 gigs of memory and 160 gig hardrive to throw in there.so all id need on top of that is the gpu

Sounds like an awesome deal. $400 for the CPU, add in the other stuff, then plunk down a cool $300+ or so for the 7900 series. Hmm.... hehheh the GPU is almost half the price of the entire thing. LOL, well what did we expect, like I said the GPU does most of the work in today's gaming world!

Ok then Mochan what would you do in my position hold out another year and keep what i have,or get a new rig.If i kept what i had would upgrading my GPU to a 7800 GS from my current 6800 GT give me a decent FPS increase??Im thinking aquamarks i wont see much of a difference but in games i think i should SEE AN INCREASE??I know my aquamark scores from a 6600 GT to a 6800 GT were about the same and to be honest i think my maximum FPS was actually better with a 6600 GT

Hmm, now is about the right time to upgrade, Bane. If I were in your position I'd be beefing up my PC for Gothic, NWN2, Messiah, and early next year Stalker. Lots of awesome games are coming out one after another. Maybe though I'd wait to see what kind of hardware these games need to run.

After that you can catch up on the other stuff that came out earlier this year that could be enjoyed better with heftier firepower.

From 6800GT to 7800GS is not that significant a jump, but I think 6800GT to 7900 series is a fatter proposition (especially if you pick up the 512MB cards -- lets you use bigger textures with no worry -- and games are now piling out 512MB worth of textures for use)

I'm doing the math on 1st time build & am starting to believe a decent gaming rig could indeed be built for $1k to -$1500.....

If you add this to the barebones i showed you earlier you will pay in the neighborhood of $1100 and you will have a backup harddrive and backup memory if need be.going part by part is not financially smart.if you part out the barebones you would pay probably $800+ for whats in the bones.
