View Full Version : Whats happening to PC game sources?
My experiences of late trying to purchase/locate PC games has been dismal:(
A couple days ago I began searching for Gothic 2 GOLD at Target, Costco & Kmart/Sears & was surprised to hear from all these stores "...PC games are being phased out of stock..." Seems brick 'n mortar are vending less PC games these days. Fortunately for me I can get G2 Gold @ Target on-line or GoGamer.
Anyone else notice the dwindling resources for PC games locally?

No problems here on my end. We only have like 1 hardcore store that sells real PC games, and they've never changed their stocking policies.
compUSA was stocking G2 Gold a couple months ago, but I think that's over. EBX has phased out pc games to the point where ALL pc games are on the bargain rack. You can find a lone copy of Oblivion sitting right next to The Guy Game. I don't bother with stores for buying games. I just look on Ebay.

Finding a store with a detailed selection of PC games has now become a rarity. The local EB Shop here has only one shelf dedicated to PC games, and only the newest titles are there. However places stocked with console games are about a dime a dozen. For the past few years I've been buying everything online.

I just found Space Rangers 2 for sale the other day... Pretty happy about that find. While the game has some short-comings, it's still a fun, quick jaunt through a dynamic, ever-changing, and uniquely randomized universe. Two games are never alike. Too bad about the atrocious localization...
Now if I can only get my hands on a retail copy of Sword Of The Stars. Check the screenshots out below... TBS and space sim junkies, check this game out, it's truly "Da Bomb"!

Trouble is, this game, while developed in Canada, is hard as hell to find. I hope I don't need to be playing this pirated copy for the next year... I want a manual, and I want instant access to any patch released.
I really can't wait until SotS 2 or 3 is released. A few more additions, such as strategic resources, and the game would be truly a stunner.

Is Sword of the Stars good enough to be the true successor to MOO2?

Ok, I just checked out Gamespot's review of SotS. This looks like my kind of game. MOO1 style gameplay without all that tedious Civilization micromanagement, with the kind of space battles I have always envisioned: plan out the strategy, give out commands, but no RTS click fest. Yes it's less control, but I actually envisioned designing a game like this where you only give basic commands nad let your troops follow your strategy, and hope for the best. Makes you feel like a real commander and not an RTS click puppy.
Well I'll have to see how it works, first. I will have to download this for now as I honestly never even saw or heard of it before now. Thanks for the heads up SbS.

There are still CompUSAs and Best Buys where I am, so I can still get games. Electronics Boutique used to be a good source, but they've flat quit selling PC games, like most everyone else. I've never tried an online purchase, but I live in a big city, so I can usually find things if I look hard enough.

Well, it's no MoO 2 for certain. In fact the devs went so far as to claim that it was a 4x game "in the vein of Civilization". Hardly. It's more a cross between Star Control and Space Empires, just more simplistic. The only thing I really wish for in this game is that there were a little more diplomatic relations and variety in spacecraft and resources. They only have 3 hull sizes (Destroyer, Cruiser, and Dreadnought), with no fighters supporting the fleets...
Still, I'm holding out for these in a released patch or expansion. Despite having some limitations, I find the game entertaining, and like most TBS games I have played it suffers from onemoreturnitis. The game becomes really good once you start getting CnC ships and the fleets become much bigger.
Either way as soon as this game is released (er, available) here, it's going to be mine. The GUI is so simple that it is nearly impossible to determine subtle nuances in command issuances without much experimentation and patience. Some documentation I'm sure would take care of this problem.
Anyway, back to SR2 for now, and then fire up SotS to find out exactly what damage a Dreadnought can wreak.

I dont even count bestbuy they have limited supply of PC games as well pretty much limited to the big name games like COD 2 stuff like that.Try to get a game thats not a media darling and your screwed.I find that my circuit city has more to choose from then bestbuy even.

I still haven't seen hide nor hair of Space Rangers 2 anywhere. And to think, I've been looking for that game since earlier this year.
Hi guys :)
We have Gamestop where I live, but I've never been in the store. I have a feeling they are top price.
I've bought from Amazon, new and used games. So far, no problems with used.
Is Sword of the Stars good enough to be the true successor to MOO2?
The true successor to MOO2 was Space Empires IV. The demo for Space Empires V is now out.

Hey Lara! Good to see you drop in on us.
Gamestop was a good PC game source in my area however they no longer carry PC games. I heard the same comment from Gamestop clerk there that "....PC games are no longer being stocked...". Maybe just my neck of the woods?
Amazon is still a good source, sometimes I've gotten lucky on finding a few new hard-to-come-by PC games there.
Lara- did you get around to sampling Morrowind? I recall aprox last spring you expressed an interest in it. Just curious, would be glad to mail you my copy if you like [but the fold out maps mine! Lol:)]
Take care

What!? That's ridiculous! What, prey-tell, do these people think these games are made on!? I smell a monopolistic-console-in-the-vein-of-Hollywood-we-own-the-world-and-there-is-only-one-type-of-game-you'll-ever-play type syndrome going on here... And hey, sure, why not? After all, they're raping us for 60 dollars a pop on console games, even a year after release, while PC games plummet to below 20 dollars at this time. It's truly amazing people want to support this type of marketing, even though those in the industry are making menial income. The amount of annual income by game developers should at least see them making a 30-70% income increase in this case, but they're not... ****ing publishers.

Well that stinks about not carrying PC games at Gamestop stores, but yet they sell them online! EB Games is doing that too. Are they the same company?
No I haven't played Morrowind Dan. I completely forgot about it.
Thank you for the offer, but right now I have my hands full with school, and don't have the time or the energy, lol, to play.

Lara,
Gamestop and EB are both owned by Barnes & Noble (they've always owned Gamestop and they bought EB this year).
As for me, I buy all my games from Amazon or Half.ebay.com any more.
