View Full Version : OT: Anyone seen Pirates 2 yet?
I thought it was pretty lame in comparison to the first film.
More pirates, more action, more effects, and a much more convoluted plot = less laughs, less sense and absolutely zero resolution for any of the several dozen plot arcs that are introduced throughout the film. In the end it amounts to 2 and a half hours of set-up for the third film.
But the kraken does look awesome...

I was once on a canoe and pretended like i was a pirate does that count?
Well, I thought the first one was mildly entertaining. I can't understand how this one is breaking all these box office records. Why are people so hot to see it? Nothing else to do this summer? i went and saw Cars. I bet Cars is the better film.
I really enjoyed the first one. It seemed to come out of nowhere and was consistently funny and thrilling. It was simply a really enjoyable summer popcorn flick, but it exhibited more signs of intelligence (in the script and in Depp's performance) than most summer popcorn flicks (especially those produced by Bruckheimer) have a right to.
Plus, I think it did strongly on DVD, too. I guess the buzz surrounding this one is the result of those factors. But it's really nothing like the first one and much more like an overly plot-heavy typical Bruckheimer production. It's still a reasonably entertaining watch, but nothing special.
Well, they filmed Pirates 2 and 3 in one shot, so I'm not surprised they ended 2 on a cliffhanger. They did the exact same thing with Back to the Future 2 and 3, filming them together. The two movies were basically two parts of the same movie. When you have a movie with lots of sequels, it makes sense and saves a ton of money to just film a couple of them at once.
Yeah, but at least Back to the Future 2 came to some sort of internal resolution for some of its plotlines. With Pirates 2 they just leave everything wide open at the end. They literally do not resolve any of the plotlines opened up at the start.
It's the same deal with LOTR. Three great movies that are part of a whole, but they do at least have some resolution at the end of each individual film.

I agree that it was a two and a half hour setup for the third film, which I really didn't like.
Also, like The Mummy Returns, it was fun, but a little TOO much. I mean, as action packed as everything was, there wasn't enough interest in the film to hold my attention for the entire running time. And I can watch all twelve expanded hours of The Lord Of The Rings. Pirates 2, I was glancing at my watch as they were running around on the big wheel.
I don't usually praise special effects since CG has made everything too easy, but the Flying Dutchman's crew looked much, MUCH better than the zombes from the first one (which I thought looked lousy).
Oh man, and did anybody see the trailer for transformers? What genius green-lighted that thing:idea:? Loved the toys and cartoons as a kid, but seriously, a big blockbuster Transformers movie:confused:
I have high hopes for the Transformers movie, even if it is directed by Michael (The Rock, Armageddon, Pearl Harbour) Bay. Come on, cars and planes changing into robots... and back again; huge mechs fighting -- many a geek's wet dream. Man, the film practically writes itself.

I liked the first movie. Haven't seen this one yet.
I'll wait for Transformers and see how it works out.
