The 360's performance could mean one of two things. Either the four hundred dollar price is way too steep for most people, which would mean the PS3 is in trouble. Or, it could mean that people are waiting for Sony's platform to launch. This holiday is going to be very interesting.

I think it's mostly the fact that the 360 has no "killer app/system mover" like Xbox did with Halo. Oblivion's a great game but with the exception of Final Fantasy, RPG's are rarely system movers. Plus you can get it on the PC.

I doubt the PS3 will have problems moving units. All the tech heads wanting the latest, coolest thing, will snatch up the initial shipments.

Boy, all I know is that Oblivion and GRAW have been in the Top 5 for each of their 3 months on the market, and Call Of Duty 2 has never left the Top 15. And according to the GameRankings each of those three games are AAA titles (Oblivion = 94.0; GRAW = 90.8; and COD2 = 90.2). Maybe those aren't[i/] "killer apps", but they gotta be close. Either way, that is pretty damn good for a system that's only been out for 6 months, and "only" has around 5 million units sold at this point. (I say "only" because that's in comparison to the other systems' installed base(s) - especially the PS2, which has around [i]50 million.) Oh yeah, and each of those three titles are also available on PC. (That shows you much people care about that.)

I don't think that's true. I've read that Oblivion alone has sold 1.7 million. Plus I don't think this is a issue that will be exlusive to the xbox. This gen is the first time that the Publishers all don't just jump ship. Even after the wii and the PS3 are released I expect to still see quality last gen games released and this is going to have and adverse effect on all 3 next gen consoles. Especially the PS3 at it's price point.

Supply issues hurt sales initially. Supply is not an issue any longer. Buyers won't be picking up cores any longer because there wasn't anything else. That measn MS must make adjustments to their marketing strategy.

You're looking at a $400 system and for the majority of gamers, that's simply too much bread to shell out for a game system. Add in $60 price gouging on the software and you have even more problems. Price gaps between current gen versions of games and 360 oifferings are typically $20 and can be even greater than that. You're not going to be getting joe average gamer biting on a 360 at these nosebleed pricing levels.

When MS releases their 256mb card, they should scrap the old one and bundle the card with core 360's. MS needs to consider promotional bundling of games and accessories with the 360. Summer months can be slow and if MS is serious about growing the install base, now is the time to make some moves. Regardless of what price the ps3 is selling at, MS needs to price the 360 so that it flies off the shelves come xmas time. If that means a price cut, promotional bundling or a combination of the two, then that's what you do. MS needs to get in a platinum hits line for the holidays.

The sales decline in May was not unexpected imo. Its $400, that's a lot of bread, any way you cut it. MS has been able to sell as many systems as they have at $400, because the xbox fanbase that migrated over to the 360 is a hardcore crowd. Sony is going to find out the hard way, just how few hardocore sony fans there are in the coming months. How many sony nuthuggers here are shelling out for a ps3 at launch. Anyone?

$400 for a game system was bad enough, $500-$600 is just plain stupid. That's why sony is so desparate for the ps3 to be more than just a game system. You look at polls in japan, the price of the ps3 is a big detractor for the system, when you look at the price for the wii, there is no problem. Sony's biggest threats this xmas are the wii and its own ps2. At $500-$600, current ps2 owners will just stay put and continue on with ps2 gaming. Why move when you've got GOW2 and FFXII coming out.

You guys totalling up the NPD numbers yourselves? Good. I like that. I don't trust the numbers that the companies spew themselves. Especially when one's talking units shipped, while the other talks only terms of percentages, it's this, that, or the other and you can't truss 'em.

Still, you only proved my point even more. Those three games are that high up in the charts - with that few(er) of consoles sold?! You betta recognize!

If software continues to stream onto the ps2, there's less reason to move to a ps3. When the ps2 debuted, I played FFIX more than anything else on the ps2 in those first few months. But, I would've played even more ps1 games if they hadn't dried up so quickly.

If all I had was a ps2 and nothing else, I still wouldn't be picking up a ps3. As long as solid software offerings are coming out for the ps2, what's the huge incentive to move forward. There are still a ton of cheap games on the ps2 that I could check out. And I could spend the next couple of years playing the various rpgs on the system. The ps2 is a much bigger threat to the ps3 than the wii360.

Sony wants to have their cake and eat it too. They want to continue selling the ps2 and games for it, and begin selling the ps3. We transition from current consoles to the newer gen for various reasons, but the single biggest reason is that software development dries up for the older systems and we have no choice but to move on. If ps2 game development and software releases continue to flourish, then one of the primary reasons to move to a ps3 becomes null and void.

You saw a transition with the 360. The hardcore xbox crowd moved over to the 360. This is the crowd that games online and is looking for the next new hit. Xbox online penetration was 10% at best. Xbox 360 online penetration is 50%. These gamers go where their friends go and they buy what their friends are playing. Online communities for games dry up. If you want people to play with, you move with the herd and the herd has moved over to the 360.

Sony doesn't have that kind of demographics. Sony's fanbase is far more generalized than nintendo's or microsoft's. Sony needs crossovers from the 360 side, but how many will they get? Supporting two expensive consoles is a big nut. That's why you see so much popularity for the concept of Wii360. Why, because the Wii is different and its cheap.

I could argue that $600 still represents great value with the ps3 based on its various functions and features, but, for the vast majority of gamers, its simply more than they willing to spend. For a lot of gamers, the price point is depressing. Even if sony in 2 years time, say, cuts the price by half down to $300, this is still more than most are willing to pay. The facts are clear from previous console cycles and the general consumer electronics industry in general, that the magic price point for items of this nature is $200 and below. The vast majority of sony's own ps and ps2 sales have occurued at those price points. That is the sobering reality both MS and Sony have to deal with or face the consequences.

If all I had was a Ps2 (and all I intended on gaming on was Sony) I'd totally be picking up the Ps3 because it's b/c. . .I could still have only one console under my TV and play the new stuff AND keep up with all the Ps2 titles coming out.

But I see what you are saying. The Ps2 has been the #1 reason I have found it easier to resist the allure of the 360. I just got the weirdo Atlus game Steambot Chronicles, there are some older games I plan to play, and the upcoming titles like GoW2, Okami, and Guitar Hero 2 are awesome. . . and I'm sure there's a lot more: I don't follow Ps2 releases in any real sense.

Originally, I used that as justification for buyihg a ps2 at launch, sell off my ps1 and keep my games and peripherals. Kept my memory card, my ps1 controller as my second controller for the ps2 and my ps1 games.

However, ps2 mem cards don't work on the ps3, the old controllers don't work on the ps3. You have to start your ps2 games from scratch as a result. The form of the ps2 slimline is quite attractive, its small and very quiet, I'm not sure I'd sell it off just to get into a ps3 which is a humongous console. Talk about your console droppage factor. Its bigger than the 360 in all directions and weighs more even factoring the 360's power supply into the equation.

The ps3's price point is such that the money you got in trade in credit for your ps2 is still not putting much of a chink in the size of the bill. With the ps3, if you want to play ps3 games, welcome to $60 game prices. Want to watch bluray movies, cha-ching. $30plus. Its not like the ps2, where people already had existing dvd libraries they could use. You're going to have invest serious money in brand new high def films. Then of course, that's supposing you have a high def setup with a surround sound setup. How many ps3s do you really think are going to wind up in the kid's bedroom hooked up to the 27inch walmart special of the week.

The ps3 is an expensive proposition if you want to make the most use out of it. That's why I don't even have to think about it. Late 2007 is about the earliest date I see in my time horizon. Right now, too many variables and too much FUD. Will bluray win in its battle with HD-DVD? High def sets are in a constant state of flux. What will be the true high def standard? 720p or 1080p? Do I really want to spend money on a 720p set if I can wait a couple of years and get a true 1080p model instead.

Exactly how will the market react to the price point once the initial euphoria is gone and reality has sunk in. Will sony get as much software support as they have with the ps2. I think sony is going to have problems here. Big expensive games on a big expensive console. Oh, sure, MGS4, Madden and FXIII will do well, but what about other developers, how will they fare? Will they be able to compete and if not, where they do put their games? On the 360 or wii, perhaps?

The safest bet if you're a sony gamer is to just stay where you are and wait for the dust to settle. In this case, where you have a console priced so high, its an easy decision for many gamers to make.

Why is that? How the hell can the PSP sell more units than the DS in the US. Could that change once the DS Lite is released? I think it will.

Is it possible the US consumers are so in the PS camp that they'll buy a PSP based on name alone? Or is GTA pushing systems yet again?

I sense conspiracy. For the last several months Slade will post the NPD numbers and the PSP numbers are always conspicuously absent. Then a few days later Slade will post the PSP numbers with them always 20k - 30k ahead of the DS. Yet, I have yet to see a single PSP title crack the top 20 for the last several months.

I'm not accusing Slade of anything, but... bullocks.

Sorry but, not everyone who buys a PSP is homebrewing and ripping their own movie content - especially since newer PSP sales have the most recent firmware, and can't be homebrewed as easily. Yet PSP software sales are dismal and UMD movie sales have officially tanked. Every store I go in has cases full of PSPs, with little to no interest from any customers.

I'm not taking these sales numbers seriously anymore.

I think the PS2 numbers are more bullocks than the PSP.

Just because no games crack the Top 25 NPD Sales Charts, doesn't mean that the games don't sell well. I look at it like this: the PSP does so many different things - it's appealling on so many different levels - that people probably buy it for it different reasons. So just as the software support is spread out - games, movies, music, etc. - so too, I think, are the sales.

PSP software sales are spread out over a whole bunch of games at around 50k - 60k each month. They are at the bottom end of the chart but apparently there are a lot of them. I'm going on the word of the supplier of these numbers in this case but he's reliable.

As for the delay when it comes to the PSP numbers, the reason why that is is because the primary poster that gives this information doesn't get the PSP sales numbers. The secondary poster who posted the more in depth numbers does.

Who flipp'n cares if PSP sold just a bit more than the DS, if these numbers are reliable or not. They're just numbers that represent sales for the month. big deal. its not going to affect your day or cause u to ponder over it in the days to come.

I guess this is the only 'real' proof some system wars addicts can use to say 'see my system is winning, i m the majority.' Hmm come to think about it, Slade usually posts the NDP monthyl sales, and sony ps2 is undoubtly always winning collectively in software sales. Slade is without a doubt in the sony camp, so these posts are monthly reminders to xbots and cubber's whose camp is winning.

Anyway, i'm going off topic. Call me cranky and old (21), but I'm at that stage where i stopped caring about 'monthly sales.' Maybe its cuz i have chem and bio exams approaching that makes everything else seem frivolous.

A "whole bunch of games" selling 50-60k each month? There aren't even a "whole bunch" of games available for PsP, much less many that are moving 50-60k each month. Additionally, in the numbers you posted for the top ten selling games, #10 Kingdom Hearts was at 60k units. So any title moving 60k a month woulda made that top 20 list you posted. If even Liberty City Stories or the new highly rated Daxter game can't crack the top 20, the software is moving pretty small numbers. Hell, I know it released near the end of the month, but even Field Commander--Sony's first party supposedly highly anticipated answer to the million selling Advance Wars--didn't crack the top 20.

The way handheld titles sell both systems definitely have some smaller titles moving units each month; many titles don't need to top the charts to be profitable. But some hits are important too. How many million sellers are on the PsP so far?

Just some more food for thought on the "whole bunch" of PsP games moving more than 50k units a month. . . Amazon.com is one of the largest online retailers. I thought it would be interesting to see what is selling on both systems. Here's the top 25 currently.

PsP
1 Sony (PSP) Playstation Portable System (#26 computer/videogame sales at Amazon.)
2 PSP Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories (#44)
3 Sony PSP Daxter
4 Playgear Pocket for PSP
5 PSP Field Commander
6 PSP MLB 2006: The Show

14 PSP Burnout Legends
15 PSP Star Wars Battlefront II
16 PSP Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2006
17 PSP Pro Starter Kit
18 PSP USB CABLE
19 PSP SOCOM: Fireteam Bravo
20 PSP ATV Offroad Fury Blazin Trails (#380)
21 Sony PSP Cars
22 PSP Need for Speed: Underground Rivals
23 PSP Virtua Tennis World Tour
24 PSP Lara Croft Tomb Raider: Legend
25 PSP WWE Smackdown vs. Raw 2006 (#527 in computer and video game sales at amazon)

DS:

1. Nintendo DS New Super Mario Bros (#2 computer/game sales Amazon)
2. Nintendo DS Brain Age (#3 )
3. Nintendo DS Big Brain Academy (#11)
4. DS Mario Kart
5. NDS Meteos
6. Super Mario 64
7. Nintendo DS - Animal Crossing: Wild World
8. DS Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow
9. NDS Electroplankton
10. DS Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time (#80 computer/game sales at Amazon.)
11. Nintendo DS Tetris
12. Electric Blue Nintendo DS Hardware
13. Nintendogs - Dachshund
14. NDS Super Princess Peach
15. Nintendogs - Labrador Retriever
16. Metroid Prime Hunters
17. Nintendo DS Mega Man Battle Network 5
18. Nintendo DS Age of Empires: The Age of Kings
19. Lost Magic
20. Nintendo DS Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney (#282)
21. Trace Memory
22. Nintendogs - Chihuahua
23. Warioware: Touched!
24. Advance Wars: Dual Strike
25. Sonic Rush (ranked #309 computer/game sales at Amazon)

Without digging deaper into the charts, the top, middle, AND bottom end of DS titles are outperforming the top, middle and bottom end of the PsP's titles at Amazon. While obviously not a national sales chart or exactly scientific, Amazon does a high enough volume of sales from a diverse enough demographic of consumers to draw some conclusions about sales trends; and that conclusion, in conjunction with the May NPD Slade posted below is: The notion that PsP is making up the difference in sales at the lower end of the charts is ludicrous.

The DS chart hasn't been updated yet: the #1 selling item over-all on Amazon's computer/videogames charts currently is the Polar White DS Lite.

Slade, if you can get the cumulative sales #'s for individual titles currently out on both systems, I'd love to see them.

DS = 855,765
PSP = 683,485

That is cumulative software sales for both portable systems in May. Not too terrible a gap considering that the DS just launched with NSMB's.

Some other stuff:

PSP LTD is the US is 4,492,531

You guys better hope that the DS Lite is a huge success because it looks as if PSP is going to surpass DS's overall sales in another half year or so.

The difference being 172,280 - which is more then the #2 game sold in May. You don't think that is a big difference in sales?

DS LTD in the US is 4,593,022
PSP LTD is the US is 4,492,531

Yet you are always posting that the PSP beats the DS in sales on a monthly basis. And you wonder why I question the validity of your information.

Those are cumulative numbers from the beginning of both portable's launches. DS launched before the PSP so it stands to reason that it would be ahead. PSP has been beating the DS in monthly sales for a while now.

Ok, so LTD is Lifetime to Date and YTD is Year to Date. Gotcha.

Missed this somehow. Anyway, considering that there are no PSP games on the chart, no it really isn't. Looking at the PSP's software numbers, you can tell that software is selling. It just isn't represented on the top of the charts. And since the number one game in May sold some 300,000 units and was a DS title, the difference in software isn't as big as it should be.

Ok, so LTD is Lifetime to Date and YTD is Year to Date. Gotcha.

Yes.

One of the reasons I'm interested in these numbers is if we can divine any trends about the future. I haven't really decided yet.

The PsP is doing well in the handheld sector, and actually the DS is doing way better than I predicted way back. I predicted it would be the more fun and innovative system but that PsP would destroy it in sales. I was wrong. Who could have predicted that the DS would become a true craze in Japan? And who woulda thought that with the DS and it's b/c that the GBA would continue for so long to outsell both the DS and PsP well over a year into the new systems lives?

PsP will need the big hits to propel it beyond where it is currently chugging along, because with the Lite hitting US shores this week and games like Final Fantasy 3 and Zelda Phantom Hourglass coming this fall. . . plus a US holiday season that should finally see much of the GBA crowd finally move to the DS. . . it seems to me like the momentum is now with the DS.

The paradigm was that the PsP was the sexy hip device, while DS was the quirky little gimmick. You can see that the paradigm has shifted in the minds of many; the DS is a cool sleek system with a lot of true originality and something for every taste; the PsP is a port-station, movie player, emu-box, geek toy and their first party attempt at a new big first party game (Field Commander) is an inferior if prettier rip-off of Advance Wars.

To me the war is already over. The DS has overcome every obstacle that was predicted for it and the great games keep on marching in. PsP still has a place for me, but aside from a couple potentially interesting titles, the PsP didn't exactly light any gamer's imaginations and future wishlists on fire this E3.

Wait till you hear that PSP software numbers are comparable to DS software numbers. PSP software sales are spread out over a whole bunch of games at around 50k - 60k each month. They are at the bottom end of the chart but apparently there are a lot of them. I'm going on the word of the supplier of these numbers in this case but he's reliable.

With the exception of Pursuit Force, much better versions of all of those games listed can be played on the PS2, and that's why no one is buying the games.

I remember when the PSP was first gonna come out that Sony was telling everyone that they were frowning on ports for the PSP. And now, that's all that's coming out.

It also can't be the homebrew that's making people buy these things, because you can't put emulation on anything above version 1.51.

The volume of PSP titles seems to be fairly evenly split up amongst titles. Yeah, none of them did 50 - 60k but there a lot that did well enough.

Edit: These are the actual PSP and DS software numbers. The ones before were just predictions using percentage change over the last year.

DS = 856,706
PSP = 679,603

You know one big problem with the NPD numbers in my mind is that they don't in fact include walmarts numbers as those aren't avalible to them. Considering that walmart is one of if not the biggest video game retailer, I think a big piece of the whole picture is missing.

Apparantely, WalMart's numbers are estimated into the NPD's numbers. Not sure how this works exactly.

Here, check this out:

Around page 23, 24, or 25, it gets into sales speak and this issue comes up.

I think maybe your source just mispoke and meant 5-6k rather than 50-60k, because PsP software sales made up a lot of ground on a number of the titles selling in the 5-6 range.

If you just looked at the top ten, it was 664,836 to PsP's 331,666, so you were right, PsP made up a lot of ground on the more even distribution of sales amongst the boatload of Ps2 ports. Pretty much shows why devs are dumping ports to the PsP: It Pays!

PsP software sales seem even better when you consider this is a snapshot from a month where Nintendo shipped one of its most anticipated titles.
