So, which one of the three delivered for you?
Sony: They had some awesome games. FFXIII, Heavenly Sword, Lair, Warhawk, Resistance and Virtua Fighter 5 all delivered and showed that PS3's best at launch would compare favorably with second gen 360 titles. Personally, I like what I see of Naughty Dog's new game. None of it mattered though because..... six hundred dollars. DAMN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Microsoft: They had game announcements but nothing really notable until Peter Moore whipped out the GTA4 bombshell. Fanboys all over went into a tizzy until the official PR came out a little while later and things turned to normal.
Nintendo: Honestly, I didn't really care.
Overall: This was not the E3 I signed on to see. Where's my Devil May Cry 4 and Resident Evil 5 info? Hopefully tomorrow we'll see some more surprises. Konami's press conference is coming up next. Silent Hill 5 360? Hopefully, because that's the only Konami IP I care about anymore.

Sony: First thing to get out of the way is price... yes it is a steep one, there is no way around it... end of the world for Sony? Not really. Keep in mind that they are doing virtually the same thing with the PSP (DS is cheaper, and yes I know it IS outselling the PSP). Now with that out of the way it was typical sony flavor, numbers, demos, and FINALLY showing playable versions of the games. Securing games like MGS 4, FFXIII and others may justify that 600 dollar price tag, for some it won't... They seemed to have everything together and showed some impressive stuff. I know there are those still reeling fromt the price announcement and we will see what affect it will have but overall, not bad... but I know the price is still stinging a lot of people...
Nintendo: Sloppy... Wii was very promising, but Nintendo seemed to lack focus on stage, and many of the Wii stuff they showed wasn't working up to snuff. GREAT line up for the DS and it looks like I will be playing my favorite handheld for quite some time (still trying to keep up with the awesome DS stuff now). All and all Nintendo had some good ideas, but still did not sound to me as if they are serious about the consoles again. Very little talk on the Virtual Console, no price point (TGS for that one), and no solid release, which went from a "before thanksgiving" to Quarter 4 2006. Wha? I am sure when TGS comes around they will get all the kinks out and have even more games announced for the Wii but right now I am just smiling for the prospects of the DS. ^_^
Microsoft: Aside from the 'shocker' that was GTA 4, which we all know isn't a real shocker now that it has been announced for PS3 as well... it was standard fare. Everyone knew that this would be the time that they would show off Halo 3, and I did have a feeling we were going to see DOA X2 in some form or another (no Ninja Gaiden 2 love... :( ). Microsoft continues to focus on what thier largest strengh is, Live... with more games coming to it and more content they are offering. I still think it is silly for them to release a HD-DVD player...but eh... I also thought it was silly for the Core unit as well... (apparently Sony wasn't listening :P), but whatever. They showed off their Eye Toy like device, and some sequels that was a given, Fable 2, Forza 2 etc. It would have been better if the GTA announcement was a true exclusive... overall not bad either... and they should still drop the core unit :P
I agree with Slade, this wasn't the E3 I thought it would be either, don't get me wrong, lots of great stuff and lot's of great games coming, but then again, there was a lot of guessing and assuptions as well and since they didn't happen or did... well now we as a gaming community will live with for the rest of the year...

Microsoft: They had game announcements but nothing really notable until Peter Moore whipped out the GTA4 bombshell. Fanboys all over went into a tizzy until the official PR came out a little while later and things turned to normal.
A couple other notables that are worth mentioning-
360- MSN messenger integrated with XBOX live, Wireless Headset, Lumines Live, and last but not least "Live Anywhere". Live Anywhere is the cross platform online gaming service connecting gamers via mobile phones, 360, and PC. One purchase gets you playing on all 3 platforms apparently. The controller vs. Mouse/KB debate will take on much more meaning (Uh-oh).
And Nintendo, they had the best press conference in my opinion. Solid titles even if they are the usual suspects: Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime 3, first ever Zelda title availabe on a Nintenco console launch date... Gameplay is taking interactivity to a whole new level and I can' t wait to give it a try. I bet the 27 games on tomorrow's showfloor will be the main attractions go forward! And I say that based on the simple fact that everyone (and I mean everyone) will want to give it a try.
Sony- Online service with most of the bells and whistles of XBOX Live. Slade mentioned the other goodies.

Nintendo gets an A, MS a B+, Sony Flunks out.

Nintendo get's an A because Zelda and Mario look amazing and the DS continues to dominate. Castlevania set during WW2 and is outside of a castle? **** YEAH!
Microsoft B+ Nothing mind-blowing for me. Gears of War still lokks amazing, and Mass Effect continues to be one of the games I'm looking forward to the most. No news on KotoR is a little depressing, but there's still hope. The conference was a success in that it made me confident in my 360 purchase.
Sony D- Virtual Fighter 4, MGS 4 and Final Fantasy look amazing, but at $600, it really doesn't matter to me. Plus the cheap a$$ attempt at robbing Nintendo was one of the lamest moments at E3 in a long time.

I'm pretty much with the consensus here...
Nintendo = A -
The only reason I'm not giving them a straight A is because they left out specific information in regards to pricing, launch date, and the virtual console. They also left out some specific details about the Wii itself that I wanted to know, such as unveiling the Wiimote "shell" and it's DVD playback dongle thing. Aside from that, this was a fun, laid back show, and the doubles tennis at the end was a really nice way to end it. They just looked like they were having so much fun.
Microsoft = B +
Kind of a straight forward deal for MS - no huge surprises other than securing a GTA4 simultaneous launch with the PS3, which is great and all, but not as great as they are making it out to be. Plus, unveiling Halo 3 was inevitable. They have some momentum finally, so we'll see if they have enough to take out the big S.
Sony = D
Sony is certainly more arrogant then they should be right now. A two tiered pricing scheme, after they slammed MS for doing it, was pathetic - especially since they are insanely priced. Oh, and I would never have guessed that Sony would be so afraid of Nintendo's new controller that they would have the stones to just brazenly steal the idea. But, gosh, Ridge Racer - what a shock a Ridge Racer would be released with a Sony console.

Nintendo for me gets a C. The reason being I'm not really into Nintendo games the only one I have any interest in is Zelda. Redsteel as well but that's an Ubisoft game. They didn't answer enough questions about there online plans for me or the Virtual console. Still to many question marks. If you are a fan of Nintendo franchises I guess it would be a A since they were all there basically.
Sony F because the Price point reminds me of Neo Geo. No Killzone at all after that B.S, they pulled last year. There so called "Live Beater" barely even got a mention. And mainly because I didn't see the quantum jump in PS3 games over the 360 that they led or attempted to lead us to believe we would see. The Xbox on Day 1 had games the PS2 never touched in it's life time that. Will the PS3 be able to say that about the 360?
MS an A because they had more games that I'm interested in than anywhere else and a lot of them are exlusive. Now the rest of the week to see how these games actually play.

Sony = F
Gawd, was that a boring press conference. They had nothing. And it looked like they knew they had nothing. Why, I'll bet that's the real reason for the big delay: they were in the back freaking out, asking themselves, 'Omigosh, what are we going to show these people; what are we going to talk about?!'
Microsoft = B+
The biggest news of the whole damn show, and Bill Gates(!), come on! Live Anywhere... sounds... AWESOME! Cross-platform capability along with a sharing of content and tools: That is just the thing to kick this hobby into the stratosphere. And that my friends, is what I'm talking about! Halo 3; GTA IV; Gears of War; Fable 2; Forza 2; Shadowrun; Alan Wake...! Still, I was dissapointed that J Allard or Steve Ballmer didn't make an appearance. Especially Ballmer; I love that guy. And, there's been more news come out of E3 on some more really cool 360 Accesories - particularly the XL Camera, and the way it will put you - literally put you - into the World Series of Poker game... but why didn't they cover this in the presser? I gotta deduct points for that.
Nintendo = C-
You know, overrall the presentation was pretty good. Yeah, there were some hiccups with the wand-troller, but I can forgive that. And besides they made up for it by announcing that contest winner and then playing a live game of two-on-two tennis. Good stuff. But a lot of their contextual stuff was total bullcrap. Their whole stance for this next-gen is based on falsehoods, and thus everything that comes out of their mouth to it's regard is rubbish. Like, what was that they said about the virtual console and the wand-troller?... that 'maybe a game like Tetris can be feasible once again'...? Man, stuff like that just pisses me off. Or their constant harping that change is good. Pfffft. Out of all the game makers out there, none have demonstrated such an aversion to change as Nintendo has over the years. And their sudden concern with bringing lapsed gamers back into the fold is the biggest crock yet. Don't speak in general terms Nintendo - the industry has been booming these last ten years. Under the leadership of Sony. Gamers interests haven't lapsed, they've just moved on! Gamers of all ages, irregardless of sex, are happily gaming on their PS2s, Xboxes, PCs, cellphones, and PSPs; you're the only who's slice of the pie has shrunk; you're the only one who's alienated gamers. And there's a particular reason for this: you're out of touch. So don't even pretend that you know the solution to the problem... to a problem that doesn't even exist in the first place! Lastly, the video clips they showed of people playing with their Wii absolutely cracked me up. Um, wasn't one of the knocks against the Xbox was that it was too big, that Japanese people don't have a lot of room in their apartments and whatnot? Hmmm, Nintendo seems to think otherwise - at least what they depict in their videos. Shoot, the people in the videos have more wide-open free space in their family room than I've seen in an emptied out two-car garage! Ridiculous.

Nobody was head and shoulders above the rest, each one shined for their own reasons and lost points at the same time.
Sony, shined with their focus on1080P, copied Nintendo with the controller, showed a bit more of some games. But no game announcements were really a shocker. They lost points with the controller too, so it was a wash. The dual shock design is a let down, the loss of vibration is even worse. Also they were on the defensive with their price, and I still don't know what the capabilities are of the 20Gb system and how online is really gonna work. So I give them a B.
Nintendo definitely got me interested because I can finally see the controller in action. Tennis looked fun, and Zelda did too. I like the little speaker on the controller so when u shoot the arrorw u can hear the "twip" as the arrow goes toward its target. Also, the fishing is cool. We knew there would be games like tennis and baseball and fishing, but seeing it definitely makes it look fun. Red Steel to me looked kinda weak. The AI is supposed to be better, but the game slows down to slow motion so that you can target specific spots, that is dumb. And the big giant aiming reticule looks stupid as hell, I thought aiming was supposed to be so accurate? Why the need for slowmotion and why the big reticule. They gained points also cause EA is making a special Madden to take advantage of the controller. They lost points because no release date and no price. I think they are insane if they think they will offer this at $299. I would say $200 is a good price for the system. At $250 or $299, they are right there with a 360 and that's too much money. So I give them a B.
MS was the most boring, but they actually made practical announcements that may yield the most tangible results. First the XBX Live anywhere will allow PC gamers to play against 360 gamers on LIVE, finally we can see who is the baddest PC and Kybd or 360 and controller. Of course PC guys will have to buy LIVE. We also found out some games are already being made to take advantage of this. Then we got a glimpse of a MS developed racing wheel that features rumble and force feedback, it has the sweetest looking drilled aluminum looking pedals i've seen, and the wheel itself is a beauty, its made by the guys who made the sidewinder, so u know it is gonna rock. Then we got to catch a glimpse of Halo3, and everything was using the games engine, MC looked so damn detailed I can't wait. IGN reported that a game called Bioshock may be the best game of the show, it comes out on 360 in 2007. Then the confirmation of the sequels, more info on Mass Effect and Gears of War, and the GTA announcement. Plus MS gets mad props for putting all their stuff on LIVE to be downloaded. But they get knocked back a few points because there was nothing really major, but the console has been out for almost a year so there aren't really any more surprises.
I have to say, I was wrong about Wii and the controller. If the system was HD I would definitely buy it for myself. I can see a lot of family fun and fun with the kids, i'm sure once they find out about it, they will want one and get one from their grandparents.
Sony, what can i say. U answered the bell. The PS3 might actually become the hardcore tech freaks system. However for that to happen Sony will have to back of all that power with some exclusive games and do something about MS' increasing dominance in luring the PC developers. They have gotta get Valve and others on board. I don't really care about the price, even $600 for 60GB is starting to become attractive if I can utilize that 60GB in the living room, as opposed to on the computer. I disagree with Slade though, I don't think their launch games can compete with 360 games this year, but from what i'm reading the system does have the power to separate itself from 360. We will see.
Its quite possible all 3 systems could be under my roof. A complete switcharoo from lastgen, of course I won't count the Wii because it won't be mine, though i'd play it.

Actually, it isnt an aiming reticule. You can aim precisicely at any spot within that area, and then with wider movements outside the reticule area, you are changing your view. It sounds like a pretty damned good way to integrate both targeting and movement into the same setup.
As far as slowing down to target specific spots, like shooting a gun out of someone's hand, well, I guess game designers are still living in the Matrix.
MS was the most boring You ripped on Sony, called MS the most boring, but Nintendo was actually able to make you pause and reconsider your animosity towards them, an amazing feat. . . .yet they ALL get a B? I had a teacher like that in debate class. We slaughtered the other team, and they committed every logical fallacy and rule violation we were trained against, yet he gave us both an A, which made our team's hard work meaningless when we were given the same grade as lazy retards. To give Sony the same grade as everyone else, with their dry, boring conference. . . argghh!!!!!!
I have to say, I was wrong about Wii and the controller. If the system was HD I would definitely buy it for myself. I can see a lot of family fun and fun with the kids. With 480p and 16x9 support, stuff is gonna look damned good, especially the first party stuff which by it's nature has reached all the benefit it's gonna get from graphics (unless for some reason you want it so detailed you can see the crabs crawling in Mario's mustache from eating to much peach.) You said it yourself: Fun. Do you really need 1080p for SSBB? Doesn't actual motion controlled gun and sword play at 480p widescreen offset the graphics thing for you at all? After all, you'll be able to play shooter after shooter after shooter after shooter in Hi-def on the 360; a few bucks for an actual new experience should have you leaping for joy.

It seems awkward to me, so you aim(with the Wii) inside this targeting reticule? What controls the targeting reticule? Why not just have a normal reticule freely controllable by the Wii since control is supposed to be so much more accurate? Either way, I wasn't impressd with Red Steel, it looks like an updated arcade light-gun game, not a serious threat or rival to upcoming great shooters like Halo3 or Bioshock.

To give Sony the same grade as everyone else, with their dry, boring conference. . . argghh!!!!!!</b> Okay, well maybe I wasn't grading the press conference so much as each company's overall presentation. Even though MS was the most boring, they gave me the most real tangible evidence of great games and services. Almost everything was gameplay footage, aside from Halo3, we got info and real prices, and you could demo a lot of it from LIVE and see all the trailers from LIVE.
Sony kinda separated themselves from 360 with the controller, however it was a plus and a minus cause u lose vibration, I think having a dead fish controller is going to feel weird. But you gotta hand it to them with blu-ray, and 1080P, and the guts to come out with the truth about the price, i ain't mad at them. I think a lot of people are unrealistic, they want all this stuff, and they expect companies to give it away for $300. Then when companies do give it away, they get roasted, like MS did last gen(oh its just a PC). I don't hear anybody saying that about PS3. I guess some people just resist change. What really ticks me off about Sony is I still have yet to see GAMES that are better than 360. I just watched the MGS4 trailer and there was NOT 1 ounce of gameplay footage, just another movie. And it seems like 360 is getting more exclusive than PS3. From Chromehounds, Mass Effect, Too Human and now Bioshock plus a lot more. Sony is trying to be cute and play hard to get, but they better start showing some games, or is it as I feared, PS3 is really not going to get started until XMAS 2007 with unique and better games?
Nintendo did good, but to me they are hiding the price and I don't think the price is gonna be good news, I think they are going to shoot for $299 that would be huge mistake. But still not a lot of details about online, price, release date, number of units that will be available. If you had any bad news I think now is the time to spit it out. They didn't. Plus I still don't see a lot of 3rd party support, whats gonna happen after they shoot their load at launch?

Regardless of the value of the tech in a console the market as shown time and again that a bad price point will kill you. MS did have success with upping that Price point ot $400 though.
And Blu ray may be sweet but I hope sony aren't kidding themselves it's not going to have the same impact as DVD did to VHS. DVD fundamentally changed how you watch movies no more rewinding Special features inteactivity etc. Blu ray is just High Defintion and there are plenty of people out there with clear Flatscreen non hdtv who watch ESPN HD who really think they are watching HD. And who can't tell the difference. Plus Sony has made there name with the casual market pushing gaming into the mainstream and I think right now they just priced themselves out the mainstream.

Yeah it is gonna hurt Sony, but not like the Saturn. The PS3 isn't going to fail. Like I said in a diffferent thread or maybe this one can't remember, PS3 might become the hardcore techno geek's console of choice and the 360 might become the mainstream console. It all depends on the games and the road Sony decides to take. If they focus on games like Rachet & Clank again, PS3 could have a tough time finding a role this generation, it'll be a waste of technology. However if they take over shooters 3rd person and fps from MS, if their online network is good enough to allow great online shooters and racers, they could do well. I think the biggest thing for them is they have to move away from superficial gameplay and beautifle CG movies and make some games with technical depth. We will see year 2. But 360 is on fire they have so many great games coming up I think MS has definitely positioned themselves to either take over #1 in N.A. or make it a close fight.
But another thing about PS3. There is more tech than we think. Take for instance it INCLUDES WI-FI, not a huge deal, but a real tangible cost component that for a lot of people has to be included an analysis. MS' stand-alone wi-fi is $100. The controller now has motion sensing in it, not really a big deal for shooters or racers, but in a flight game or sports game huge, the blu-ray media for games could end up making a difference, not the first year, but maybe year 2 or 3 we could see MS' having to use 2 and 3 discs to make the same game, 1080P again not big now, but 1080P TVs will be the sweet spot real soon. I think the biggest question is how much money Sony is going to lose. Because there is no way they will get the marketshare they had, the games and everything is going to cost more money, and I think gamers are going to pick and choose, all of this makes it a really tough time to have a super expensive console. As I've said before, if Sony would have went balls to the wall with the PS2 and made a 480P console with dolby digital and an online network, all the stuff they said was too soon to do, then they would have slammed the door shut, but they left a little crack and let a MONSTER of a company inside and MS isn't going anywhere, and MS seems to be operating smarter, evolving more efficiently, and faster. But i'm not gonna cry for Sony they made huge money on PSOne, took the cheap route with PS2, made huge money on it, now its time for them to give it back to the gaming community!
Nintendo was the best in my opinion. They made the Wii look fun and different. They are taking a risk but after all...games are suppose to be fun. Eye candy does not make them fun and I think we all might be surprised with what comes to the Wii. I know I am picking one up....and my ds has become a good part of my gaming machines.
Nintendo A- ( only because I want the price point of the Wii annouced) Best presentation, fun and upbeat and not arrogant.
Microsoft did well too with their plans to intergrate windows vista, live and the phones. It is a good strategy and will make things easier for all of us. I was down on the 360 at first but I think I was bashing MS as it is easy to do. I now think they did things smart, have a powerful machine for less than SOny and have gathered a superior team of in house devs that will surpass the past MS content with new , exciting stuff. I do not own a 360 but I could someday. The vista games coming look awesome...have to see it all when it comes.
B- as one drawback is I feel Vista will be delayed. Their presentation was a little dry as well. I did like seeing Bill Gates show up for his first E3 though.
Sony
The big picture we all expected big things. We wanted to see some killer stuff and to be honest I saw nothing mind blowing. I was surprised...their presentation was so bland, they were an hour and half late and bored me with track after track of GT4 with some added eye candy. BIg deal... I didn't see anything stand out and grab me and do not get me wrong...I liked Sony. I feel they have made some mistakes..the blu ray for one may not even be adopted by many (ala uma's failure). The cost is plain and simply too much in these times. The online strategy is needed but not focused yet. The psp is a hardware superior system but getting bounced by the DS easily. The Ds simply has games people want to try...fun innovative stuff. I have heard rumor already that there will be no PS4. It will be interesting to see how this all pans out. I think Sony went from being the underdog ....to now being the arrogant , lazy company who focused on things the consumer doesn't want. Their presentation had to be the worse I have ever witnessed and at times they had to ask for appaulds. Does that give you any idea how underwelmed everyone was?
D-, F D- on price and games shown, F on presentation to get us excited. They failed.

Nintendo - A- - The Wii DOES look pretty sweet.
MS - B- - GoW stole the show, but not much else impressed me too much
Sony - D - Ps3 is too expensive...but yea, there is Guitar Hero 2 coming out so I won't give it an F.

As I've said before, if Sony would have went balls to the wall with the PS2 and made a 480P console with dolby digital and an online network, all the stuff they said was too soon to do, then they would have slammed the door shut, but they left a little crack and let a MONSTER of a company inside
Well the thing is, if they did all that, maybe we'd have seen a $500 PS2 way back then. It may be how much money Sony will lose now, but take into consideration all the money MS lost back then, to make now happen, and hey maybe MS is *still* losing money now.

It seems to me that most of people here gave sony a F for pricing PS3 @ 600 dollars. But....what does pricing have anything to do with the quality of presentation at the conference?
These conferences aren't supposed to get people hard but to be informative about the strategy in the future. I think Sony conference did just that. Perhaps, it's not the best in the history known to mankind, but it definitely isn't the worst. And people here who gave Sony a F seem to acknowledge that too. PS3 is too expensive, but it's still going to be win the next gen war. But hey, for no reason what so eve, I am going to give it a F.
I just fail to see the standard of you guys' grade system. If you guys were educators, we would have everyone in school failing for not kissing up.
I watched Big N's and Microsoft's presentations.
Big N :
Two things impressed me about their presentation ...
The Wii Controller - Big N managed to convey the fun factor (yeah i use the
dreaded term) when it comes to using this controller. A truly innovative device.
Zelda as a launch game - I won't lie, when Big N's presentator announced this
news, I felt chills down my spine ! WOW !!!
Grade : B+
Microsoft
Slick and professional presentation. They managed to inform everyone about
their upcoming strategy and sprinkled it all nicely with a healthy dosage of
some incredible gameplay footage.
Grade : A
Sony
While I didn't actually watch their presentation, I did look at some gameplay
footage. I'll say this ...
IF
Warhawk and Heavenly Sword are any indication of the level of technological
prowess the PS3 truly possesses (remember these are but 1st gen PS3 games)
THEN
This is the first Playstation that has blown me away. I wasn't impressed by the
PSX - the N64 won me over. I wasn't impressed by the PS2 - the Xbox won me
over. The PS3, I don't friggin' care about the price tag, if it'll take gaming to the
level displayed on E3 then this baby'll have a nice comfy place reserved for it
in my living room.ENDIF
Sony E3 overall : A+

I don't think it had to do solely with pricing. I wouldn't call it an F. . .it was not complete failure. But "C" means average, and they were below average, behind the curve. There's no way to give them better than a D+. A couple of games looked cool, but beyond that, they get a D because:
--They didn't live up to their own hype.
--The press conference was boring; there is near unanimous agreement on this.
--The gameplay footage wasn't noticeably better than 360's upcoming games.
--They looked like complete wannabe's unveiling their "motion sensitive controller. . it was utterly and devastatingly embarrassing and shameless.
--Two completely illogical versions of the console, MUCH worse than MS's two-tiered package because at least on 360 you can upgrade.
--And yes, the massively high price counts against them.
Nintendo changed perceptions and followed their own unique vision, and they packed lines four hours long.
Microsoft presented a competent, professional presentation full of relevent details and kick ass games.
If you grade by the curve, Sony failed. If you grade by complying with the expectations of the test that is E3, Sony was a D+. I'd love to hear you argue otherwise. Whatever potential for a future E3's with their hi-tech hardware is irrelent to grading this E3. . .Sony flopped this one plain and simple.

I wonder if any of you have watched the Motorstorm footage at all? It came in after the press conference but what they showed almost lived up to that render they showed last E3. A bunch of effects are still missing but the game is only fifty percent complete. The cockpit view looks especially impressive:

Even though this post isn't directed towards me ... I'll take the liberty of posting my opinion on the matter.
E3 is all about new and upcoming games and new technologies relevant to gaming in general. I look at this from a gamer's perspective. If you take gaming seriously, pricing shouldn't be an issue and neither should be how many versions of a particular console are out on the market.
But there's more to grading the press conference. We weren't simply grading the consoles, but how well the companies did at promoting their console, and on what and how they unveiled. Sony had a press conference that the industry and many hardcore gamers viewed as boring, and the attempt to rip off Nintendo and Xbox Live showed an embarrassing lack of originality. I will no longer be calling the Xbox division of MS "me too"--Sony has unquestionably now earned that title.
I'll concede your point about the most important thing to a gamer isn't the industry stuff, but the games and technology. But you dismiss out of hand some things that ARE important to gamers that Sony screwed up big time.
Perception is important because it can determine the success of a console, and the success of a console determines what games are on it. MS seeming more competent and less expensive could end up meaning migrating franchises. Losing GTA exclusivity hurts, and MS used the game--and its exclusive 360 features-- to promote its console. Sony never even mentioned the game. Unless something changes, this series is big for a lot of console gamers and sells systems.
"If you take gaming seriously price shouldn't be an issue." I've been poor before and may be poor again, but right now I'm really lucky. But a LOT of the millions and millions of gamers out there don't have an unlimited budget for their hobby. If you are serious about gaming, you probably want to play a LOT of games, that means getting the most gaming for your dollar. MS looks like a better value right now. That could change if the extras under the PS3 hood eventually pay off in a significantly better gameplay experience, but for now it's hard to see the value in a system that's $600 + Tax + Second Controller + 1 game (aprrox $750 to buy a Ps3 to play Madden with another person.)
You say if we take gaming seriously we shouldn't care if there's more than one version of the console. But, it's only the serious gamer that cares, because we know that if you make features non-standard you get programmers catering to the lowest common denominator. Virtually everyone (and rightly so) ripped MS for releasing a non-standard hard drive. Sony creating a non-upgradeable system that leaves off key features they promised would be standard is even worse.
A few really great looking games (Heavenly Sword esp) saved Sony from complete failure, but it's hard to argue they were successful when they essentially created so many yawns, and so many new skeptics.

Heavenly Sword looks just decent in my opinion. The best thing going for it was the animation. It was a small arena not like 99 nights or Dynasty Warriors were it's wide open expanses.
Warhawk looked good as well but it didn't honestly look better than the better 360 titles. Resistance Fall of Man wouldn't even make a mark on the FPS heavy Xbox platform. But it's the first exlusive high profile one on the PS3 so it automatically get's elevated to a "Halo challenger" (and let's be real it's going to happen).
Motorstorm looked good but no where near what they showed last year.
E3 is all about marketing trying to impress publisher to pick up your game and for Publishers trying to get retail and the media excited about there product. This is the reason for E3. And Sony failed they went in with strong momentum and now all the buzz is negative. They failed to excite the media I doubt retail is excited about that pricepoint. How are they going to bundle this at launch?
Not to mention all the cutbacks on features the failure to show last year's most talked about game. No real demonstrative improvement over the competiton like they've been saying they whould have. No real details on there network plan they have been talking up.
What were the successes from a marketing standpoint? None and to top it all off they lost the time exlusivity of the platforms biggest franchise. The confrence quite simply failed.
And that stupid yeah It's "Ridge Raaacer!" line is the worst!

Actually, that 20 gig pack is fully upgradeable. You can even attach WIFI and memory card readers to it as well as upgrade the 20 gig harddrive. Even 1080p is available through analogue for that version of the console. In fact, that five hundred dollar pack seems to be the one built for gamers while the six hundred dollar one is built for tech enthusiasts. If I had to get one, it would be the 20 gig pack and if the pricing holds at five fourty nine Canadian, then it is only fifty dollars more then 360 here in Canada. A comparable value since I would pay that much more for some of the Playstation's franchises. However, what remains to be determined is whether the developers that support Sony's console right now will stick around. The next year, year and a half, is going to be extremely important.

Too much hypocrisy in this thread to be quite frank, the games shown at the conferences determine how successful the presentation is in the eyes of true gamers, biases have no place here. To be quite honest, any gamer who denies that Sony came through yet again with games, yes, the thing that matters are kidding themselves.
It's amazing how people are already calling it doom and gloom for Sony, due to the price point of the two sku's, yet still deny that the $500 dollar PS3 is a much better deal than the premium Xbox 360. You get Wifi, 1080P will be available over component for that package. If it's game you wanna game this is just perfect for you, it's not crippled in anyway in that regard.
The fact is, these prices have been announced several months ahead of the launch. Anything could happen between now and then, how about launching with the 65nm process, isn't that a possibility? and even if it were not possible for november, is it so farfetched for Sony to offer the premium at $499.00 and the other at 399.00, where everyone would think it's a steal. Hey! I'm not making any predictions here, but these are possibilities are'nt they? Ms has not outdone Sony when it comes to PR and marketing and I don't see them doing so now. I think Sony has some serious artillery in the pipeline, people are talking about all things playstation even now, and no matter how much negativity you hear about it, it's nothing more than MS and Nintendo fanboys attempting to boost up their console of choice.
Fact is, the games do the talking, and what Sony showed was superior to what Ms showed. The best from Ms was Gears of War, I agree with all who declare it, however, If Gears is the best Ms can muster against the PS3 on launch day, I feel really sorry for MS. After so many years in dev, the animation is still stiff and last gen and the framerate still stutters. Sure it's IQ got boosted a touch since then, but then Lair rapes it a million fold without question.
Heavenly sword is without question the best playable game at this year's E3, If any of you have seen the 7 minute high def video of this game and seen the animation, graphical brilliance, and physics system of this game you would all conclude the same. FF13 and it's white engine is merely at it's initial stages on the PS3 and yet, so many could not distinguish between gameplay and cg in that trailer. Resistance and Warhawk are phenomenal looking games displaying 4x aa and high end aniso, the physics engine shown in resistance reminded me of FEAR but much better. There is so much going on in this game, objects are littered all over the stage displayed and it all comes to life when you see the physics system in action. A tonne of enemies on screen is no mean feat as well and the framerate is buttery.
Warhawk is really a game for the tilt controller, it was already mighty impressive last year without it, and is now, even more impressive because of it. The control scheme of this game will be a lock. Now... MGS4, how could any forget, best trailer of the show,
all we're missing now is the HD trailer. Still Kojima says if people think it looks good now, they have'nt a thing. You mean it get's better from here?
Virtua Fighter 5, best fighter at the show, exclusive to the PS3. Assassin Creed, another amazing looking game, exclusive to the PS3. Ridge Racer 7, exclusive to the PS3. Now I won't say much about this one yet, but Naughty Dog's project looks out of this world, stellar animation and texture work, this bodes really well for the ICE engine and reminds us even further how amazing Ratchet next gen will be. This more or less sums up the most impressive showings if we're talking console games at E3.
Too human, I personally wanted this game to look favourable, No fault of mine, I was disappointed, worse trailer of the show. How could Ms come above Sony then, somebody will have to tell me what games was so impressive on that system? GTA NEXT is on the PS3 and XBOX 360, so what. Will Halo and Gta sell just as much as they did last gen has always been my question. A new IP is going to come in and make new waves, it's historical in this industry, get an effing clue some of you.
So many Sony Studios did'nt show their wares at this E3, like sucker punch, Incognito, ICO+SOTC team, Polyphony with it's GT5, Zipper Interactive and so many more. There is a flood of games to be shown on PS3 yet. TGS is upcoming, and you can be sure DMC4 and RE5 will be playable there. Support for the PS3 has never looked better, I'm talking Western and Eastern Devs. Bioshock is coming to the PS3, that was confirmed earlier today. Oblivion is really a no brainer at this point, I mean what else does the PS3 need? AV enthusiasts and true gamers are wetting their pants over the PS3 tech and display, yet still it will struggle in the market. We'll have to wait and see now, won't we. April was the first month where the 360 managed to outsell the PS2. That was due to the last set of hardcores taking the plunge, let's see what May has in store folks. Is the 360 suddenly a sales monster because of one month? we shall see.
Okami and God of War 2 are two stellar gems shown at this year's E3. Okami has already received glowing reviews everywhere including Famitsu as well as import gamers and from import review sites. Two triple A games under the Sony belt yet again, with another in FF12. Yakuza and Godhand are two games worth mentioning here as well. If that comprises the worst showing at the show, then I'll be damned.

I'm looking for to the Last Word responding in the other thread about Sony feeling it doesn't need "games" at launch for customers to buy their system. I mean seriously, he's just said it's about the games, but the Wii and the 360 have some seriously cool games this fall, and offer a much better price value.
I'm starting to truly think Sony could be in a lot more trouble than even the most grim amongst us have predicted.
