Yeah, effin Wii, pronounced we, what a dumb effin name for a console, but hey, its true.

Nintendo takes piss with final Rev name
Thursday 27-Apr-2006 5:10 PM It's the, er, Nintendo Wii - which is pronounced "wee", just in case you were wondering
Well, the Revolution is no more it seems. Nintendo has finally revealed the name of its next-gen console and - drum roll, please - it's "Wii". Or possibly the Nintendo Wii - we're not entirely sure. And yes, it's pronounced "wee".
If it wasn't for the fact that we just recieved official confirmation from Nintendo itself - along with a brand new video demonstrating the console's final logo - we'd probably think the whole thing was a joke.
So, while you sit there in dumbfounded belief - contemplating whether you'll still be desperate for a Wii in the corner of your room come November - why not check out the video and read the tiny bit of explanatory gumph that arrived alongside the press release.
Advertisement:
All we've left to say really is that we're looking forward to waving our Wii wands around at this year's E3.
Introducing ... Wii.
As in "we."
While the code-name "Revolution" expressed our direction, Wii represents the answer.
Wii will break down that wall that separates video game players from everybody else.
Wii will put people more in touch with their games ... and each other. But you're probably asking: What does the name mean?
Wii sounds like "we," which emphasizes this console is for everyone.
Wii can easily be remembered by people around the world, no matter what language they speak. No confusion. No need to abbreviate. Just Wii.
Wii has a distinctive "ii" spelling that symbolizes both the unique controllers and the image of people gathering to play.
And Wii, as a name and a console, brings something revolutionary to the world of video games that sets it apart from the crowd.
So that's Wii. But now Nintendo needs you.
Because, it's really not about you or me.
It's about Wii.
And together, Wii will change everything.

You know, because it's written in such a way, it's hard to take that article - and that site - seriously. But it's true. Oh it's true...
Nintendo Wii
[UPDATE 2] Nintendo announces the console formerly known as the Revolution has a new--and surprising--moniker. Analysts are mixed.
In a surprise announcement this morning, Nintendo revealed the new name of its forthcoming game system: Wii. "As in 'we'," the official statement adds. For the official announcement visit the Revolution...err...Wii Web site. After a brief Flash introduction, the site explains Nintendo's move. "While the code-name 'Revolution' expressed our direction, Wii represents the answer. Wii will break down that wall that separates game players from everybody else. Wii will put people more in touch with their games … and each other."
The site goes on to say that Wii should be easy to remember for people around the world, no matter their language, and that it will avoid abbreviation. As for the unusual spelling with the lower-case letter "i" doubled up is intended to represent "both the unique controllers and the image of people gathering to play." It may also be worth noting that "ii" means "good" in Japanese.
Nintendo sums up the name change with the following comments. "So that's Wii. But now Nintendo needs you. Because, it's really not about you or me. It's about Wii. And together, Wii will change everything."
[UPDATE] Game-industry analysts were swift with their responses. "Looks like a good solid name for Nintendo," said Michael Gartenberg, vice president and research director of Jupiter Research. "The key is making sure they follow up with a strong launch campaign to evangelize the new brand and help drive the message forward."
Wedbush Morgan Securities' Michael Pachter was more mixed in his assessment. "My initial reaction, of course, is that the name is dumb," he bluntly stated. "However, upon reflection, I thought that the name Game Boy was dumb, REALLY thought that the name Xbox was dumb, and can't even recall my reaction to PlayStation. Let's face it, devices with cool names like Dreamcast and Gizmondo fail, and the lame names seem to do well."

Yet another Wiik attempt to flame Nintendo! Although the new name is stupid, the console itself will still be impressive.

Well, it wouldn't be the Nintendo wii know and love if they didn't do at least something completely retarded.
Seriously, did they not focus test this? I'm not normally a fan of making decisions based on large-group reactions, but still. Maybe the name is great in Japan or something, and that's all they care about. Can't they do region specific names? "Revolution" for us war-mongers, and "Wii" for the countries whose asses wii've kicked in war?
Screw it. I guess they know wii'll buy it anyway.

With a name like "Wii" Nintendo needs as much Chuck Norris association as possible.

All joking aside, I really like the name Revolution. I liked the Revolutionary War in America. I like the word, the concept. Revolution. . .it's like fast, violent evolution. It's a great damned name for a game system, especially this one. Makes me wonder if they backed off the concept because the Chinese, and increasingly Americans, are freaked out by "revolution."
I hereby propose a toast (of pure bourbon) to lay to rest a damned fine name, and to help ease the pain of the utter travesty that has replaced it.

Thanks everyone! I missed this thread earlier today as did I miss the renaming.
But all that aside, I laughed my arse off at some of your posts. There's sometimes a fine line between extremely corny, and really funny and the posts in this thread gleefully jump back and forth over over it :)

I have to say, that a long time ago, many people made fun of the name "Gameboy". Really, it was slammed all over the media (the regular media, there was no gaming media to speak of) and now it's a household word.
And the Wii, well, it's already a household word, tho with a different spelling.
But the big N is a cagey beast. And I think I understand why, in part at least, they changed the name.
They did it so that when Peter Moore slams the upcoming console and controller yet again, he will be forced to say wee over and over again, and his audience will erupt in gales of laughter, and no one will take him seriously.
Perhaps the PS3 will become the...Duu?

Many consoles have had dumb names that just came to be accepted after awhile (xbox anyone) but yeah this one takes the cake. I mean how the hell is someone supposed to sell this thing with a straight face? I think I will call the thing the double u two and run the risk of someone thinking I am talking about tax forms than to refer to my play thing as the wee.

Good point, let's review.
1. Dreamcast - kind of too surreal sounding for a console? Big fan however.
2. Nintendo 64 - NES, then Super Nintendo, then Nintendo 64 - never quite liked that name although I was fond of the console (and actually preferred it over the Playstation).
3. TurboGraffix - lame but effective at the time in my opinion
4. Neo-Geo - No clue
5. Jaguar - Where the heck did that come from anyway? Atari 2600, Atari 5200, Atari 7800, Atari Jaguar. Huh? Doomed to fail starting at it's name announcement.
Can't remember my initial reactions to each of these but they sure seem questionable in this same regard when looking back at them.
Even the Gamecube and XBOX names sounded odd when first hearing them. Now they've become part of my vocab and don't think twice about it. Being lumped in to the gen X category many years ago, I was very turned off by "XBOX" when I first heard it as I initially thought it was an obvious attempt at targeting that market at least that's how it appeared to me. After spending some time on both consoles, long since forgotten....
The PlayStation is aptly named and has become a household word - literally. Almost to the same extent of Kleenex (tissue).

Wow, this has got to be the biggest naming blunder in the entire history of video games.
That said, a name is just a name. No matter how crappy it is. But still, that is just so.... lame.
And yes, XBox was also a dumb name, but this one is on a whole class of its own. I would rather pronounce it as Why than We, like it's Wi-Fi or something. Man I simply refuse to call it "We".
As Nintendo will proudly tell you. Smaller is better and less powerful is even better than that so why not the Nintendo Pii Wii.
