Not going to have much practical effect though unless your 360 overheats a lot. If this were a PC you'd be able to overclock it more, but since it's a 360 all you'll probably get is lower play temps.

Lucky I have the warrenty though MS... Later down the road if their are issues, they would probably replace it with the lower heat CPU. Maybe they are trying to do something like the Centrino which seems like a pretty impressive processor when you look at performance. I use a Centrino in my laptop which is my Digital Audio Workstation and it is awsome, even when compared to the big bad AMD X2 chip.

Hmmm, that article doesn't saying about the noise of the fans in the current 360 - which is another big reason for prompting the change.
Xbox 360 getting new CPU
Chartered Semiconductor announces new deal to make smaller 65mm-process chip for Microsoft's next-gen console.
One of the most common consumer complaints about the next-gen console is that its graphics capability requires a central processing unit which needs to be cooled by a constantly running, less-than-stealthy ventilation system. In other words, its fan is loud.
Some disgruntled consumers have even compared the 360's fan to a Blackhawk helicopter. Those same consumers will welcome today's news that the Xbox 360 is getting a new CPU which runs at lower temperature. Chartered Semiconductor Manufacturing has announced it will begin making the Xbox 360's CPU using a 65-nanometer (nm) Silicon-on-Insulator (SOI) semiconductor technology. Currently, the Singapore-based hardware manufacturer company makes 90nm Xbox 360 CPUs under an agreement with IBM, designer of the CPU. The first Xbox 360s with the new CPU will go on sale in 2007.
For laymen, the change means that the new 65mm Xbox 360 CPUs will have more chips per wafer--which means lower energy requirements, lower heat output, and cheaper chip production costs. That is music to Microsoft's ears. "We look forward to working with Chartered on the production of such an important component of our Xbox 360 system," said Larry Yang, General Manager of Xbox Console Development at Microsoft.

When I got my first 360, it roared like a lion, but this new one purrs. It's still not as quiet as my XBOX, though.
Ah, I remember the days of no-noise cartridge-based gaming.

yeah well I'd rather my console roar than spazz out, make a bunch of clicking sounds, and then **** out all together...
by the way knife, death blooms.

I notice the loud fan until I see "Press Start" on my tv. After that, I hear nothing but a game being played.

Loud CPU/GPU fans are a fact of life for the average PC consumer. We're so used to it. Some though can't stand it and get super stealth fans. I usually don't even notice the noise after a while, though yes they can sound like Blackhawks. My PC 3 generations previous was as noisy as that (it used a Delta fan) but my current one is very stealthy. Not silent yet, though.

Whether you've got 4000 watts of audio bliss or 400 who cares about how loud the fans are? You will not hear them!!!!
