My GameCube is refurbished.
It works fine too - in case you were wondering.
Though I didn't think was... after the first day.
Early on, while in the middle of playing Eternal Darkness, I got a message across my screen that said... well I don't remember exactly what it said; but it indicated that some part of my machine was not operating correctly or that it couldn't perform a certain function. It freaked me out. And pissed me off. "I #@$%ing knew it!", is what I thought.
So I boxed everything back up and took my faulty system back to the store to return it. (Which really bummed me out because I was able to score a platinum one.) But upon explaining the problem to the guys behind the counter... I got laughed at.
Now I don't know what you know about Eternal Darkness... but I will tell you right now that that game will #@$% with you!
After a few minutes of being laughed at, I was finally told that it wasn't my system... it was the game... #@$%ing with me!
I haven't played the game since.
But I have played my Cube a little more. And like I said, everything works fine. [Knock on wood.]
I have to knock on wood because I did not get an extended warranty or PRP. Refurbished systems do come with the same warranty as a new system though. I believe it is one year - which is the same for all the systems, I think.
But I really have to reccomend, to anybody, that an extended warranty - or even better, a product replacement plan - be purchased. That (also) goes for all the systems. And, especially, for this reason, I do not reccomend buying a system off the net or thru a mail order. There are two reasons for buying into these plans... the first is pretty obvious... but unfortunately it is also the only real benefit of buying an extended warranty. With a product replacement plan there is one more benefit:
If your system goes kaput, you just take your system back to the store from whence you bought it - and walk out of there with another one! (And not necessarily "just like it" - but prolly better!) See, if the system you bought was, let's say... an XBox bundled with JSRF and SegaGT... and it went busto today... you would walk out of there with an XBox bundled with The Clone Wars, Tetris, and 2 months of free XBL! You'd get this because that's the only current/like model that Microsoft is selling right now. But no matter what promotion is going on - even if there isn't one - you'd never lose out. Because even in the case of the PS2, you'd walk out of there with an improved model than what you were playing with. The only problem might be with the GC... where they may not have a platinum one to replace the one you're turning in.
So, if you're buying a refurbished system from a local store (like a Gamestop), I would say, "Don't worry about it" - as long as you buy the PRP... your covered.

Funny about Eternal Darkness, too weird actually.
Coincidental you should mention GameStop, I was in my local GameStop during lunch today & noticed both REFURBISHED & USED units.
Used was priced $10 less than refurbished, & carried 90 day warranty.
However I buy my Xbox, I know It'll be a good deal. Think of the original release price of $300. Current new price of $179 is a steal!
Im surprised they arent selling like hotcakes.
What a console! :D
