Bob Ross Paints on Revolution
Yes, it's true - the famous cult painter goes virtual on Nintendo's new generation platform.
by Matt Casamassina
March 31, 2006 - In news that breaks free from the shackles of abnormal and jumps headfirst into the realm of surreal, independent development studio AGFRAG Entertainment Group has announced that it is working on videogames based on the cult television icon Bob Ross.

The afro-enhanced painter is known around the globe for his mild-mannered television show, The Joy of Painting, where he has for decades demonstrated his speedy skill with a paint brush. The public access hit has been picked up by more than 3,000 stations worldwide in its long run. In 1995, Ross died at the age of 52. Many of his paintings were donated to PBS.

The games, which are being developed specifically for Nintendo's Revolution console and DS handheld, will be focused on the art of painting, no doubt harnessing the precision accuracy of Nintendo's control methods. A PC version is also planned.

We're not kidding.

AGFRAG made the announcement yesterday, prompting concerns from skeptics of an early April Fool's joke. We contacted AGFRAG directly for clarification.

"The press release is not a joke, but the side effect of people thinking it is might help us get noticed," explained Joseph Hatcher, who heads up the company brining Bob Ross to Nintendo's systems.

AGFRAG is Hatcher's development group, consisting of students, independent developers and professionals in the game industry. "AGFRAG secured a worldwide exclusive licensing agreement with Bob Ross Inc. just before the Game Developers Conference took place," Hatcher revealed. "We are talking with various companies and plan to make an announcement near E3 regarding which platforms the game will be developed on first, and maybe a surprise."

Hatcher himself admits to being a big Ross fan, which is partly why he wants to make games based on his work. "I personally loved watching Bob Ross growing up and I enjoyed watching how easily he created his paintings. We want to translate that same feeling of watching the TV show into playing a Bob Ross game," he said. "Whether you are an eight-year-old child, or a 65-year-old grandma, we want anyone to be able to pick up the game to create and play to your heart's content."

When we think about videogames, the name Bob Ross does not spring to mind. But the DS and Revolution may be the best systems to bring the Joy of Painting to gamers. "The Nintendo DS and Nintendo Revolution are perfect platforms for what we have in mind!" Hatcher explained. "We like the way Nintendo carves their own path of innovation and creativity and we strive to do the same."

AGFRAG has not yet secured a publisher for the titles. More news on these projects will be forthcoming beginning this May at the Electronics Entertainment Expo 2006 in Los Angeles. Aspiring painters, we'll keep you posted.
I for one am pumped for this game, since I like to mess around with painting and such, and I was a fan of ol' Q-tip head also. The Revo wantroller is so perfect for this. Too bad it's not Mario Paint 2. That would be something fierce.

I can already hear Waco and the other haters. "See, gimmick games like this are all the Revolution will be able to have." Pffft. Imagine something like a rediculously deep Okami-style game. Nintendo will have more than a couple of them, I'm sure.

Well, all April Fools joking aside, I've been secretly hoping capcom would do a Revolution version of Okami because the concept of restoring a dead world through magical painting seems like a perfect fit for the new controller.

Bob Ross is cool. I remember idolizing him way back and trying to paint like him. I think I still have a few paintings lying around with his mountain panorama with trees on the side style landscapes.

OK, you just made me launch from my left nostril what looked like an edamame onto my monitor. It feels good to laugh that hard in the morning!

I'm all for this.
I'm a painter, well, i like to think i am. When i was making my portfolio for architecture, I started to paint. Then that was it. :)but those were good painting none-the-less

My concern is the level of detail involved. I want to make many types of strokes with different brushes. I want to be able to take out a #5 brush camel hair and stroke it one way, and then take out a #1 for that extra precision and stroke it the other way.

In short, i am hoping this program appeals to hardcore and newbies to painting. It would be nice if there were different modes, like Novice, Expert, Master. And depending on which mode u pick the more options you get.

The best thing they can do, and i mean they would be super stupid NOT to include this, this is my biggest maessage towards them:
SAVE THE PAINTING AND UPLOAD IT TO YOUR COMPUTER , say via SD card, or email it to yourself.

So you can ACTUALLY make art, print it and show it to your friends , rather than loading up the revolution/ds to show the piece of work, I know the PC will have this, i hope they dont get stupid and not include it in the rev and ds.

If that option is offered, then i will consider purchasing the product, otherwize, whats the point of even bothering if u cant print the work and show it off in your home? Or perhaps ebay?

The best part is, i believe that Ross guy used Oil paints. I cant stand oil paints cuz of the smell and the health hazards and the mess.
So this is a nice alternative.

Please dont screw this up.

I still think it might be despite it being posted on both AGFRAG and bob rosses site but I could be wrong.

Well i won't argue but it might as well be because even if this is legit I am sure the project will be scrapped before ever seeing the light of day.

The 360 and PS3 might have thermo-nuclear processing power, but they don't have happy trees. Without happy trees Microsoft and Sony are doomed. DOOMED!

Bob Ross has a website?

BTW is his son still alive, I remember there was an episode where he had his son do the painting.

Oh really? What industry incite do u have to verify or even suggest that idea? Its not like this game is going to need a huge developmental team and require a huge production budget like the heavly delayed games such as: Too Human, PDZ, Zelda, StarCraft Ghost (political issues?).

So, this one turned out not to be an April Fools joke? Are we really going to be using the "magical" wand to paint happy little tree's, as well as aim guns so precisely we'll be able to shoot weapons out of people's hands in Red Steel? And play black and white art-house games? Freaky.
