re: Strategy Games-Console, what strategy game[s] had the most success [sales/popularity] thus far?
[Being primarily a PC gamer, I plead ignorance to whats available for consoles in the strategy genre] :o

Well, if we're talking about just CONSOLE gaming(meaning, no PC), I would guess that Final Fantasy Tactics for the PS1 was the most popular strategy game of all time.
HOWEVER, I wouldn't be surprised if the new Final Fantasy Tactics ADVANCE for the GBA has beaten those numbers.
But, I'm just talking off of the top of my head. I really have no clue.

Yes, thats right, non PC strategy games.
Im vaguley familiar w/Final Fantasy title. Maybe someone can provide breif review of FFT?
My gaming is turning a corner, recently I purchased a GC & hope soon to pick up an Xbox. The genre I prefer [strategy] will likely be in conflict w/console platform; I dont think theres a lot out there.
Irony aside, these two consoles will expand gaming.

Well, if you're looking for strategy games, on the PS2 there is
Ring of Red
Disgaea(rather crazy, however)
Dynasty Tactics 1 and 2
Kessen
Front Mission 4(coming soon)
I personally think Ring of Red is a bit short of amazing.
Final Fantasy Tactics is one of the best games of the Playstation. It involves character units fighting on a gridded landscape, kind of like a chessboard but with trees, mountains, lakes, etc.
Combat involves these various characters taking turns, sort of like chesse except you cannot move whatever character you want. They all move in a certain order, normally depending on the characters's speed but can also involve other factors.
Each character has a certain amount health and mp. When this health reaches zero, that character can no longer operate. MP is used to do special techniques.
There are many, many ways to make the HP or your opponents reach zero. (smile)
Each character can choose to operate under a certain class, like thief, knight, summoner, and many more. As a character fights and operates under this class, they gain skills and abilities that apply to those classes. For example, a thief will learn how to steal the various equipment that his enemies carry. A knight can wear very heavy armor, and thus have more HP than others. Summoners can call on magical beasts to help them fight in battle.
The game is great because of the ability to customize your team so deeply. No game is the same, no battle is alike. Advancing your sqaud into a stronger force is quite addictive.
The FFT storyline is quite weird, and this needs to be said. Another weakness is that some fights are a bit TOO hard...to the point where you almost have to use a glitch to win.

Happy to be of help.
Oh no. Front Mission is a strategy game that involves giant machines controlled by people. Very, very fun and highly recommended.
