Microsoft's Vista slides out of view
Paul Loughrey 16:13 22/03/2006

New operating system won't make its scheduled November release

Sales in the PC hardware market may suffer this Christmas, as Microsoft confirms yet another delay to the launch of its new operating system, Windows Vista.

After numerous setbacks and a removal of various operational functions to ensure the latest launch deadline was adhered to, the Redmond giant has had to admit that it will be unable to launch Vista in November as planned.

According to technology website CNET.com, Windows chief Jim Allchin confirmed the delayed launch during a telephone conference call with reporters and analysts, stating: "We needed just a few more weeks, and that put us in a bubble... Where some partners would be impacted more than others."

The company still plans to finalise development of the operating system - which has already been in development for several years - by the end of 2006, and will utilise the additional time to resolve any remaining usability issues and ensure that security for the system is as high as possible. "We're trying to do the responsible thing here," Allchin commented.

Security for the new operating system is of paramount importance for Microsoft, as the company has partially attributed its various delays to the extensive time and effort put into the creation and testing of Windows XP Service Pack 2, which was released to correct major security issues with the XP operating system.

Microsoft does not expect the delay to affect the overall PC sales, but admits that its PC manufacturing and retail partners may view the proposed January 2007 launch rather differently. "There's no [change] to the PC forecast from our perspective. You can ask the partners what they think," he stated.

According to Stephen Baker, VP of industry analysis at NPD Techworld, retail PC vendors are likely to suffer the greatest impact, suggesting that sales expectations for the fourth quarter were high, on the basis of the new operating system being launched in November.

In terms of PC software sales, the only gaming title currently announced as an exclusive for the new platform is Bungie's Halo 2, although the title was never given an official release date. Microsoft had also planned a major marketing push for Vista to coincide with the launch of Office 2007, which is due for release in the second half of the year.

I think every Xbot who is using the delay of the PS3 to prove Sony's incompetence should seriously STFU at this moment.

It's one thing to have one division of one corporate conglomorate not meet it's deadline and another thing entirely to fail to meet the deadline of what drives the corporate conglomorate itself.

PS3 was only delayed in Japan. And since Japan doesn't matter to the X-bots, PS3 was never really delayed.

That's true, and some here like to ignore that Sony never announced a launch date prior to their November announcement.

Maybe, but given the circumstances it makes good System Wars fodder.

Thank god. I hate upgrading my PC. Is XP somehow not doing it's job anymore or something?

XP is just fine for your normal everyday PC programs - like Word and Excel and Quicken and whatnot... Vista is geared for gaming.

As for you trebor, I hardly see the correlation. You're really reaching here.

The correlation is that Sony has had a delay of one it's major products and Microsoft has had a delay of it's major product.

The Playstation brand is Sony's major product. It's where most of its profits come from.

Also, Prior to the Sony's delay annoucement, they were constantly stating a Spring launch and November is a Fall month. They never mentioned which markets they would launch in first.

Correction, the Playstation brand is one of Sony's major products. Sony Pictures makes quite a bit of money too.

If 40% of Sony's profits come from the Playstation brand, then the PS3 IS the MAJOR product. Call it semantics if you like but if the Playstation division was sold. The rest of the company would cease to exist..

No, XP is fine. But MS needs more money.

Vista actually looks like it's gonna be a good OS, but there's 2 things that keep me from really considering it til I absolutely have to upgrade. 1. All the DRM bullcrap that's gonna be slathered all over it, and 2. MS is taking the same Consumer Choice route they did with the Xbox360 and are offering something like...I dunno...6 different versions of Vista tailored for individual needs.

Normally I'd consider different flavors a kinda good thing, and it could fix XP's biggest problem of trying to be a jack of all trades but master of none type OS. But MS, who've gotten into the bad habit of not thinking things through recently and love to gouge the hell out of people, are probably gonna have it set up so that if you want a fully fuctioning OS you'll have to pay $999 for the Ultra Ultimate Punch Your Sack & OMG Titties Edition. And you know they'll eventually say "WELL PEOPLE LOVE A CHOICE", but I know I'll be pissed off if I pay $150 for an OS that's good only for checking my email.

If I'm not mistaken I think at least one of those versions (the enterprise version I'd guess) carries an annual fee.

Three words: "download/copy", "install", and "hack" (wink, wink). If I can do all three I could'nt give a rats ass what MS charges.

That's pretty much what I did with XP. I got so annoyed with the reactivation crap that I just went ahead and grabbed the corporate edition and never looked back.

If someone finds a way to hack out the DRM and other miscellaneous crap MS is bound to thrown in, I'll go out and buy a copy just to be semi legit, then go off to the torrent sites to grab the hassle-free version.

And the annual price thing? I could understand doing that for corporations that need to install the OS over multiple computers, but hopefully MS will keep the fee away from the end user segment.

I'll be taking a pass on Vista for at least a year. MS doesn't pay me enough to be a beta tester.

Exactly, just like every other OS microsoft has released theres some huge bugs that they skippped. Hackers are good at finding MS's shortcuts. And then a few months later a patch will be released to fix those bugs. I'd give it 2 years, b4 i actualy start considering the product.

Oh, and I'm going to get Halo 2 for PC, i'm sure there will be many talented people who dont work for MS, will release a patch allwoing XP users to play it.
