Rome Total War: Gold

I haven't played many computer games for the last couple years Rollercoaster Tycoon 2 and Sim City 3000 are about it... but I'm thinking I'll pick up RTW: Gold... Ancient Rome is an interest of me, and I LOVED playing Ancient Arts of War back in the 80s, and as I understand it this is another battle strategy game...

so... anyone have tips, suggestions, things for a newbie to know when playing the game?
