Take Pikmin and your favorite platformer, shake well and you'll probably get Tokobot. You start with 6 Tokobots and 3 formations. As you progress you get more Tokobots and items that allow the Tokobots more formation options (and more tricks) as well as the ability to morph into various robots, machines and vehicles. While it is a platformer at heart, it's the formations and morphs that add variety and keep the game fresh. The camera isn't perfect but most of the time it doesn't get in the way. There's no load times ingame, which is pretty amazing.

While there is a loose story with NPCs and villains the characters aren't represented very strongly and aside from being cute, the Tokobots have no personality. I'm big on story so a lack of it is always a little disappointment for me.

Tokobot is also puzzle extensive. So far, nothing racks my brain but the Tokobot's skills gradually get more advanced and there is some platforming that has timing that is a pain to master. There's lots of items to collect that are all usable relative to the Tokobot's skills, the boss fights are inventive and the music is zany, in a Japanese sorta way. Overall it's a solid platformer that's different enough to warrant it a look at a decent pricepoint ($30 new).

Thanks for the post.

The lack of personality concerns me; games with a generic feel tend to lose my attention. I want to play it anyway; it sounds like there's enough gameplay for my tastes to make it worthwhile.

I'm sold. Armored Core FF is already getting stale and Prince of Persia for the PSP is such a piece of crap that I just want to puke. Even SOCOM is getting boring as hell.

Oddly, Star Wars Battlefront is still my most played title on the PSP, that and Hot Shots Golf. A good strategy game is needed...Field Commander has my attention. :D

I'm the same way, but the gameplay sorta compensates. I think you'll like it.

I was already planning on getting Field Commander. It's out in a couple weeks and you can play online and through email. We may have to hook up.

Have there been any reviews for it yet? I tried out an early version a couple months ago at G.A.M.E in SF and the game was really rough and very very similar to Advance Wars (which could end up being a plus).

I haven't written it off, but unless it has some real depth and has gotten considerably more polished than it was, I'll probably pass. I keep praying for a Nippon Icci tactics game for the PsP. . .I've already got Advance Wars DS, and probably the historical tactical strategy game Age of Empires DS; for my PsP I'd like a gorgeous, deep fantasy-style strategy game.

Oh yeah, that's exactly what's interesting about it! Now I'm just hoping that the story (and it's presentation) isn't ghey. I am hawking this one.

Tashi,

I see in your sig that you're beta-testing Pursuit Force... what do you think? I got the demo in the mail the other day - I thought the game was pretty decent. I was surprised. I doubt I'll get it tho'; it seems like it would be one of those games that puts your fingers and thumb thru a major workout - and I don't know if I want to subject my PSP to that.

Getting free demos is cool tho'.

The graphical style seemed a lot like AW on the in-game overhead view, but I couldn't really say what they've done with the cut-scenes and stories. I'd hope they take a different direction from the saccarine-kiddy style of AW. . . while I love the gameplay of Advance Wars, the chummy "ah shucks, ain't war fun!!!" vibe in the story mode is kinda creepy and disconcerting when you get right down to it.
