I picked it up because I was dying for a basketball game, and because I had a gift card that was burning a hole in my pocket. Also, I read the reviews and it seemed like the only two real knocks on the game were the price compared to the other versions and the fact that they did not improve on how the crowd and cheerleaders looked as compared to the other versions. Those are really crappy reasons to knock a game imo so I gave it a shot, and boy am I happy that I did.
If you are a hoops fan and own a 360 you owe it to yourself to get this game. The gameplay is just absolutely the best in a basketball game ever. I especially love how they handled all of the little things in this game---the variable ways that the ball can bounce around on the rim, the incredible amount of animations(I don't think that I have seen the same one twice), the hot/cold streaks that teams get on during a course of a game. All of those things add to the most realistic basketball sim that I have ever seen. I have already started a franchise with the Sixers, and it is unreal how true to life AI plays. He will brick like 8 shots in a row, but then come back in the second half with steals and fast break buckets and finish 12-26 for 35 points. Just amazing! Oh and btw the graphics overall are flat-out stunning too just because of the detail of the players and arenas. I can't say enough about how great this game is. If you are thinking about buying this game and are balking because the reviews are not in the 90's just stop right there and go pick it up.

Yes, I have it and I agree with your high opinion of it. I am not a big single player guy with any of the sim sports games but I play my cousin online often and are really enjoying 2K6. I'm an ex-NBA Live guy having converted after being hugely disappointed by Live 360 game. My cousin did the same (converted after being a hard-core NBA Live guy; he couldn't stand the 360 version either).
I'm hoping he'll now be a devoted 2K guy because I'm liking this much better than anything EA did with hoops and are hoping to play an even better version in 2K7. Once they get the other graphics to look next gen (currently it's only the players that are next-gen while the audience, cheerleaders, coaches, etc.. are still last gen looking) this game will be that much better!!

I have not even attempted to play any multiplayer on 2K6 yet, so all of my opinions are based on the single player stuff and it is just that good. The Association mode kicks serious ass, and I am only in the preseason mode so far. The 24-7 mode is entertaining as well, and I am only in the first venue. I guess the point is that the single player mode will keep me busy as hell before even considering the multiplayer. When I finally get on Live I will definately play you.
Btw---I do agree with you on the graphics. I guess that they wanted to get the game out more quickly so they cheesed out on the fans, cheerleaders, and coaches. The player models make up for it though, but you are probably right. Next years version will, most likely, be basketball perfection.

For this version of NBA 2k6, does the game have the right analog stick for shots, while using the left stick for the Iso-motion/freestyle controls?
I played the PS2 version, and I honestly didn't like the new controls. The R-stick for shooting was nice, but not having separate controls for player movement and the dribble moves really hurt the fun factor for me.

Yes, the game does use the "shot stick" and I am really liking it, but I must admit that there is a learning curve with it. You can't really use it very well with the medium or long range jump shots, but it really shines with dunks and layups. You feel like you have control of it like never before.
The dribble moves also take some getting used to. The thing is that the effectiveness of the dribble moves seems to have a whole lot to do with the ball handling rating of the player that you are controlling. That is why I love the game so much---it is a total sim.

Of course you also use the shot stick when taking free throws which also has a slight learning curve (albeit very slight - doesn't take long to get the hang of free throw shooting in 2K6).

I wish there was some way 2k6 could have kept both the shot stick and the Iso-moves on the R-stick, though that would have been almost impossible. I had a lot of fun on fast breaks on 2k6, hitting the open "J" when I couldn't get to the basket.
