View Full Version : Project Gotham 3 vs Test Drive Unlimited

I have to say after playing the PGR3 demo I came away highly impressed. I watched the demo on the 360 before, but the playable demo is much better. The visuals in the game are awesome and i'm not really even talking about the car models. The cities and the lighting is just fantastic. Plus the feel of the cars is great definitely not as sloppy and loose as the previous incarnations. The interior cockpit racing view is just a godsend to the series, it makes all the difference in the world in accurately seeing the apex of the corners like you can from first person camera view, but also maintaining or increasing the sense of immersion which you lose from "riding the camera." The cars are smokin and the sense of speed is really good.

I did pick-up on the long loading times though. The AI at least on the demo was not aggressive at all. I'm sure that will change typically in the latter categories the AI starts going bonkers.

But to me it looks like Test Drive Unlimited is going to be the first truly "different" nextgen racer. The devs have modeled a small scale version of Honolulu and the entire game is based around this little city. No lobbies no categories no divisions no real separation between online or offline. If you are online the city is the lobby system. If you have a private game and your friends join, then they drive around your city with you, if you have a global game anyone from live can pop in. You can just drive around, there is traffic and cops in the game too. On top of that you can somehow create markers to make up a track or point to point race. You have to buy homes to store your cars as your collection grows as you can only keep so many cars in one garage. You can buy clothes apparently your character will be visible. The best news is that the developer is making it a technical racer so the cars will behave hopefully with the kind of physics we see in Forza or better.

The game is listed to release on 1/31, if so that be great. This is Test Drive though so I'd really have to read some reviews before I believe the series could pull of such dramatic changes. For now I guess I have to test drive the PGR3 demo over and over.

Thank you.

Still, the game sounds frickin' sweet, doesn't it?! I'm encouraged to hear that others - like yourself - are interested in it too. Let's cross our fingers, eh.

I haven't played PGR3 yet, but it sounds pretty "next-gen" to me. The Live aspects just sound too cool. It is definitely a must-have game, as far as I'm concerned.

The thing is, must-have and gotta-have-right-this-minute don't mean the same thing with me. See, I can't play two racing games at once... and I'm still frickin' addicted to NFS:MW (damn this game: I love it; and I hate it!). Then, in just a couple of weeks time, TOCA 3 comes out. That's a g.h.r.t.m. game. So I don't know when I'm going to get PGR3. :(

Hey thanks!

You aren't going to see me on Live for awhile tho'. Just as you probably haven't seen me on it for a long while now. I'm having problems with my internet connection at home. Very frustrating. Hopefully will be resolved soon.

Yowza - I just read my previous post: boy did I butcher the editing. (Sorry, TMG.) It's hard to concentrate here at work; I try to get some posts in over lunch, but there's a lot of distractions. It's all I can do tho' - what with the 'net situation at home. :(

Hmmm. You know I respect your opinions, Prince - of all the VGR members, I think you've got the second best tastes in videogames (after me). But I'm going to have to pass on CoD2 and DOA4. I'd take CoD2 if someone gave it to me, but I know I wouldn't get $50 worth out of it. DOA4... well, I don't know... maybe someday...

Wow Glock. I gotta go with Prince on this dude. First Terri Hatcher I'm not feeling her at ALL, ditto for Eva Longoria or whatever, but I tend to like women with a little bit more meat on their bones, think J-Lo or Selma Hayek. And on COD2, WHOAH! You can't get your money's worth? Glock, i can't even finish the game. This is like the longest game in the world, even though I know it isn't. First let me explain, buy the game and put it on Veteran mode, you'll get your money's worth easily. Its hard, but its not the kind of hard where its unfair. It just takes so long to take a building or take a position from the enemy. Every second they are throwing grenades at you, you gotta crawl then back up from a grenade, shoot a guy, crawl again, another grenade, kill a few more guys, then you take a position and your guys yell, "here comes the counter-attack!" so you gotta get into defensive position and hold back the german counter-attack, then a tank rolls in. The reason why the game is taking me so long to finish, is after I do a battle, i'm exhausted and don't want to start another campaign until the next day. But the game is great, it is unlike any other way game on the XBOX, nothing is like it.

One game you guys might want to look at is Kameo, my gosh this game is GREAT. I can't believe I'm enjoying this kiddie title, but in all honesty I am having a great time playing this game. It is beautiful the graphics are so nice and the gameplay is fun. I had this game or my daughter had it, and I just completely ignored it, big mistake. This is without a doubt Rare's best work for Microsoft, if you are thinking about getting PD0 don't even think about it, get this game, even though they are completely different, this game blows PD0 away.

Are you guys getting the Ultimate Avengers or Ultimates DVD coming out next week, or am I the only Marvel geek who knows about this?

Re: CoD2

Sorry, TMG, the game just doesn't appeal to me much. I think it would be one of those games that I'd stop playing after I died one time. I'm sure it's intense, and I'm sure it can be difficult... but to tell you the truth, I'm not really looking for those things right now. Perhaps if I were caught up... But that's what I mean when I say that I don't think I'd get $50 worth out of it - I just wouldn't spend a whole lot of time with it. I'm sure the game is deep, grand, has amazing production values, is enriching, and is deserving of my time... but I've made my decision(s) months ago as to what games I'm going to spend time with and what games I have to skip; just or unjust, they're my decisions - and I've got to live with them.

-

On that note... I just picked up my first two 360 games. Some of you are probably going to shake your head when you read which ones, but... well, I'm sure we'll find enough common ground in the months and years to come: I picked up the two Rare games.

I came this close to picking up PGR3 as well, but in a rare display of self-discipline I didn't. Like I said (or tried to say) before, I'm still dealing with NFS:MW.

But I did splurge and pick up: the play-n-charge kit (a must-have, as far as I'm concerned), the remote, a second wireless controller (hey, why just show my friends my 360 when I can have them play it with me, right?), and the wireless net adapter.

Also, I'm back on Live (and back on the net)! It took a new modem, new ethernet cable, and a new router, but all of my problems have been fixed! :D

Hey I'm the guy who wont play Grand Theft Auto so i cant rag on you about COD2.

Still not feelin' Terri Hatcher man, that 2nd pic made it worse. Gime another hottie so i cn see if its one off or we just dont see things the same.

I think you got a good game with Kameo, PD:0 well u have to form our own opinion there. But there were definitely some good missions in the game, just not enough for me, and some were super frustrating. You might like the online action, I never tried it, after I finished the game i just wanted to get rid of it.

Wait so are you saying you don't the New Avengers or the Ultimates or both. The DVD is about the Ultimates, but I think they are calling it Ultimate Avengers, I think for marketing. The Ultimates are cool, I just hate that they made Thor incredibly dumb and weak, and his hammer is just stupid looking, Hulk and Cap are about the same, they weakened Iron Man, but that may be because it is early in their time frame and he will probably get more powerful as he keeps improving his designs.

Far as the New Avengers I'm lukewarm, they really haven't showcased the team yet, hopefully this new story arc will put them in action against some heavies, some dude from outerspace came to Canada and wiped out Alpha Flight, so shield reluctantly called in the New Avengers(don't know if AF is dead or not, the way they were portrayed they looked dead, but they never kill a whole super team in one shot).

Avatars, I don't know I guess I just really never cared or bothered. Lazy.

Well, to be perfectly honest - as hot is she is - I don't know if she's even in my top 10. You want another one? I'll give you a bunch (just off the top of my head): Kate Beckinsale; Emmanuelle Vaugier; Alyssa Milanno; Monica Belucci; Eva Mendez; Mia Kirshner; and Famke Janssen. But my main crushes are (still) on Jennifer Connelly and Sandra Bullock.

Don't know if you already saw, but both Best Buy and Circuit City advertise the DVD to be priced at $12.99 - and both are giving away a little something-something (BB = trading card; CC = candy) with purchase.

Welcome to the world of PC racing. We've had what you're describing for literally years. Makes me chuckle hearing you talk about something like this like it's new or something. ;) Have fun. Driving from a cockpit view is the only way to play a racer, and basically one of the reasons why I don't play them on a console. They tend to be highly unrealistic affairs, to be sure.

PS- I'd hit that brunette chick in the Smallville series. Rrrwwwrrr!

yeah you are right, believe me i'm sure i was PC gaming before or as long as you. So I know what you mean. But a lot of these things are only new to PGR3, console racers such as Forza, and Toca and Motogp have been right behind or equal to the PC in many aspects. The one thing the PC loses on is match-making in online racing. The ease of setting up leagues and standardized voice chat and gamertags. But yeah I would still say PC racing might have the edge, but you don't choose to game on a PC or console based on that, you choose the style of gaming overall. If I still wanted to game on my PC, like you nothing happening on the consoles could make me switch, and right now nothing that's happening on the PC can change me from a console gamer back to a PC gamer.

You know what PC racing game I am really impressed with? GTR. And I finally have a PC that can run it at a good framerate. Also, I can play it with my Xbox 360 controller ... yes, the wired 360 controller can be plugged into a PC and used for gaming, provided that you buy the version that comes with the driver software.

Why would you want to play it with a 360 controller, I would think if you are gonna bother racing on the PC you'd want to get a good FF wheel? I can definitely see using the 360 controller for some PC games even some FPS, but a PC racer i'm gettin a wheel. Of course a good PC wheel is not cheap, so if that is the reason its understandable, but in your case I know the expense of a good wheel wouldn't deter you. So what do you like about the controller over a wheel in this case?

Remember that I bought my wired controller specifically for the 360 since I thought it would help improve headset communications. It's just incidental that i can plug it into the PC.

I'm kinda over racing wheels, since I have to have it in just the right position to enjoy using it. The controller still gives you excellent control.

One thing that console racers have over ALL pc racers is the vibration on the controller. I know it may seem like a little thing, but it's something you can physically feel and really adds to the experience in that aspect.

Many PC games have vibration support, as long as the controller also supports it and they are compatible with each other. Likewise, many PC games support force feedback wheels.

I finally got around to picking this up and watched it last night. I actually tried to get it the day before but it was surprisingly sold out at a local Target. It is based on the Ultimates Avengers vol. I. It was a great movie they really did a good job. The action was excellent and reached a boiling point toward the end. They really leave no doubt as to who the baddest guy in Marvel comics is, the Hulk was kickin' mucho azz. If they somehow could have made this into a movie, it would probably be the best comic movie ever. But to do so would probably cost $200 million easy no studio is gonna cough up that much loot for the Avengers.

How much face time does each Avenger get? Are they the same, does Cap and Hulk get more, and is there a lot of action featuring Iron Man? How long is it?

If I wasn't being a tight wad with $$ while waiting for a non pre-ordered 360 at EBGames, I would go and get this.

I can tell that judging by the questions you are asking and that picture of Omega Red, this is definitely something you will want to go get. Of course Cap get's the most time, after that I would say its pretty balanced. Cap is pretty tough, but his weaknesses are definitely exposed, as well as all the individual avenger's weaknesses(though they kinda create some false weaknesses for Iron Man). None of the other Avengers bow down to Cap and one of themes of the movie is that Cap has to earn the respect to lead this team. You will definitely dig how they portray Tony Stark and Iron Man, though there are a few inconsistencies that showed up in the movie. But I can forgive the nitpicks, it was cool watching Iron Man fight Hulk even when he was getting trashed. The best was watching Thor and Hulk fight whoah! You get two main storylines in one kinda, the fight against the Chitauri and then the fight against the Hulk.

By the way if u like Iron Man, u will want to go buy the Extremis series, if u don't already have it. The great thing is they book 5 of 6 is already out, so you can grab all 5 and the last one should be out this or next month.

This sounds like something I will enjoy, especially if there's some fighting within the group. I'll have to keep my eyes out for any sales later on.

I'll have to read up on the Extremis. I've been out of the loop with comic books for a while.

And oh yeah, you were right about PDZ. I knew I should have gotten PGR3 instead! I don't care if it is more of the same. Which to me it probably wouldn't be - or play like it, I mean - because I always used a from-behind view in the other two PGR games; the cockpit view would make it seem pretty new I think.

And the other thing to remember is that Darwin is on his 4th PGR game. We're only on our third. I think by my fourth I might be getting tired of it too. Either that or looking for drastic changes.

Back to PDZ, I'm all done with it already. No, I haven't beaten it - I'm just all done playing it. I only got thru the tutorial stage and some of the first mission, but I've had enough. I don't like it. In fact, I'm hoping to trade it in tonite. (I'm going to take a hit on that one; boy did I eff up!)

Leah? i don't even know who dat is? Must be RBH's girl. I'm feelin u on Eva Mendez though.

Wow I'm surprised u are returning it so soon! If you stopped on the first mission, I assume you mean the Club Mission and not the first training mission. That mission was a pain in the azz, but I would definitely try and complete it. There are probably 5 good to great missions in the game that should be played. The game is just unbalanced it seems like they developed some of the missions without regard to the others. If you are just stuck I can probably help you get through it.

I got PGR3 the other day, I traded in Condemned. I loved Condemned but no reason to replay the game. I got killed on the trade in, $26 bucks!! Anyway I disagree with Darwin. Undoubtedly the core aspects of the game are the same, but they have definitely made the physics better, they have put in all great cars and no junk cars, so this is just exciting immediately. The AI is not as combative, not NEARLY as combative, but this could get worse later, it did in PGR3. But that was when the cars got faster, these cars are the FASTEST all of 'em, and the AI has given me NO problems. It seems like they are using a derivative of the Forza AI, but some people thought Forza's AI was combative, I didn't. The tracks are beautiful. They are still mostly city based, there is one test track which reminds me of real race course, only I don't know which one. It is great just like a Motogp or Forza track, no guard rails or right-angle turns! So I don't know how many of these tracks they have thrown in, but I hope at least a few more. You can also create your own tracks this is completely customizable so there is an unlimited amount of custom tracks that can be built.

And the coup de grace, this is the real reason I bought the game. It just feels so good racing inside the car, and I have been begging a console developer to do this. On all the cars the dials and guages work, but on most of them its too hard to see to use, but on some of them, like the Concept Mustang GT-R, the guages are big enough to actually use instead of the HUD. From inside the car the camera shakes and bobs like crazy creating a sensation I haven't really felt in other console racing games. I'm sure that I will get bored eventually with all the kudos races, well actually maybe not. The only kudos event I hate is the cone challenges. I love the speed camera and car overtake and hot lap challenges. I hate the cones simply because I don't like artificially having to slide or do tricks. This game is rated like 89% or something, let me tell you if PGR2 was 93%, this game is 100% cause this game is better in every way and detail than PGR2, down to the soundtracks, I haven't been online with it yet so i have yet to see how it is. Its definitely a good game, I have no qualms recommending PGR3, Kameo, COD2, and Condemned. I would definitely say stay away from PDZ, sorry u had to learn that the hard way. Of the other launch games, I'm really interested now in Quake 4. I'm realizing that these games are getting pinged for no good reason. I'm sure Q4 has some chop, but is it really significant? I doubt it, just something a reviewer can look wise ragging on. But PGR3 and finishing Kameo should hold me down till GR3, and that should get me to Oblivion, well actually GR3 will probably give me a good 6 mos of replay value.

Boy, I don't know, TMG. I think you give Hunter too much credit. I mean, Leah Remini?!

I never even heard of her before. But then I checked her out - at your behest, Hunter - and, well... let's just say that, I don't see it. She's all you.

I'll take her. She's become hotter over the seasons of the show (she was even hot with baby-fat).

Where are you going to trade in PD0? I wouldn't be surprised if you walked out the store with $30+ in credit, though it seems they are slacking as of late. New games, they may still give great credit. For the older games, it doesn't seem like the 1/2 of the used price policy is working anymore.

Leah? i don't even know who dat is? Must be RBH's girl. I'm feelin u on Eva Mendez though.

Eva Mendez is hot too. She had a good role in Hitch. I had no idea that was her in Training Day until last year.
