I just downloaded Classic Doom 3, will try it later along with the Parallax Mapping mod. Has anyone tried it out yet?

Whoa whoa whoa!!! The guys who did this are real maniacs! They did a real labour of love here. The game plays EXACTLY like Doom did all those years ago! Well, minus the automap and the fact that you have a mouse to aim in three dimensions now. But you know what? It plays better than Doom 3. O_o
This is the kind of fast-paced adrenaline-filled gameplay that made Doom great in the first place (not-that-whack-a-monster-in-the-closet-fest Doom 3 was). And playing it again like this, only serves to reaffirm my belief that Painkiller is the REAL spiritual successor of Doom, not Doom 3 or Quake 4. The tackiness of the rock music, the fast paced monster whack fest, the feel of the physics (which weren't there before but are there in Doom 3), Painkiller has the same feel Classic Doom 3 has. Painkiller of course is above it in many ways although there's something about hte raw formula Doom 1 managed to do that Classic Doom recaptures.

This is THE reason I'll now be buying this game. Sweet.
Downloaded it but yet to try it out..

Hehhe, I also have a ton of games on my hardisk. Hmm....
I have 17 games installed. O_o
I still have a ton of space left over though, about 70GB. Getting dangerously filled though, I try to keep half my harddisk empty but I'm running 2/3s full now.
It's only Knee Deep in the Dead, though. No Shores of Hell, Inferno or Thy Flesh Consumed. The cool thing is the music, which they remastered but kept true to the original, it's still the same blood-pumping frenzy. They did a number on the chaingun, though, and it was something awful. The accuracy and firing rate are really bad. It's not very useful. You also have to see the opening cutscene, it's hilarious in many ways although it's supposed to be dead serious. =_=

holy crap!! i couldnt even fit 34 games on my HD lol
Oh..and to add to this sickness I have SW battlefront 2, CoD 2 and GTA SA for xmas too add to my over stuffed HD !!!!!!!!!!!!! Madnesss......
Ya,
I do have some I could remove I guess. Some I haven't been back to in years...IWD2,Alien VS Pred 2, etc. I dunno why I never go back and finish em ..well I guess I do. I get something new and it holds my interest for a bit till I get bored or finish it. Most of them I get bored with to be honest....
I have 2 80 gig hds and one is primary full of my games and it is closing on being full. I guess I should get rid of the old....flush em out. I am not a pack rat around my house but I am with my games !

Man, and people think I spend too much time in front of the monitor!
I only have 120 gigs, with about 18 left, and about 80 of it is games. I'm going to have to start pulling stuff off. It's when I got DSL and started downloading more mods, especially Morrowind stuff, that it got out of control.

Downloaded the mod and i notice they got co-op which could be pretty dang fun to although i havent found a doom 3 server yet that doesnt lag
Well to be honest most of these have been on here a long time. I always think I am gonna come back and complete them but do not find the time to do so with most. I work full time, take care of a house and have a wife and 2 kids so my gaming time I make time for is only a hour or three stole at the end of my day anymore.
Not to mention since joining GW and WoW most my gametime is put into those this last year.

yup..I have a few older games that take just a few hundred megs.....Insane, Freespace2....and yet these games still rock. Funny how bloated things have became over the years

Well, my games I got are going to be Indigo Prophecy, Civ IV, and Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory. Those should keep me busy for a few nights to come.
I hear IP is suppose to be pretty darn good in day where there are very few adventure games ! I still must complete Pandora Tomorrow before moving on....
Suicides-by-Steve
12-26-2005, 10:23 AM
Pandora Tomorrow is the redeeming quality in the Splinter Cell franchise. I wasn't too keen on the first one, but the second (Pandora) is better by LEAPS and BOUNDS over the original. I'm presuming Chaos Theory should be just a good. If you ever want to try running through it co-op, let me know, we'll set up a date... heh. Couldn't get my hands on IP today, but saved 50 bucks buying Civ IV and SC:CT in Boxing Day sales...

Now i remembered why i hate the Splinter Cell series.Even with Pandora Tommorow it feels way to awkward.Playing in 3rd person is to awkward for this type game.Even Zooming in can be a pain.I tried the Demo and maybe i could get use to the 3rd person perspective but to me it just doesnt feel right for a tactical shooter.Ill stick with Ravenshield,SWAT 4 and GR as Pandora feels like a huge leap backwards compared to those games.
Mochan
12-26-2005, 01:22 PM
Yeah, I hate the 3rd Person view. It's the only real complaint I had about Sniper Elite. Pandora Tomorrow singleplayer wasn't really much better than the original Splinter Cell. I heard the only really good point about it was the Spies vs. Mercs. Chaos Theory is supposed to be better but it has Star Force, so I have no intention of ever getting it.
Suicides-by-Steve
12-27-2005, 04:06 PM
Wow!! Chaos Theory is EXCELLENT! Best stealth game I have played since Thief 2. 3rd person or not, the game is WAY better now, with multiple objectives, pathways, and weapon loadouts. Co-op and multiplay round out the excellent package. Can't wait for SCIV.
Mochan
12-27-2005, 04:43 PM
Yeah,I heard the biggest improvement of Chaos Theory was the non-linearity, which after all was our biggest complaint about Splinter Cell in the first place. Pandora Tomorrow didn't really fix the linearity problem but I heard Chaos Theory did.
I do want to get CT but Star Force is stopping me cold. I just refuse to get it. Steve, is Starforce treating you well? I stopped playing Beyond Divinity partly because of that.

I've heard tons of complaints regarding it, but I think it's a European/Asian problem. I don't *think* it's implemented in our Western published discs, but I could be wrong. Now there IS a long disc verification boot-up process, so it may be included. What's Starforce do exactly? What's the issues with it precisely?
Anyway, yeah, Chaos Theory is an EXCELLENT progression in the series, and if they keep it up, it'll soon be one of the definitive stealth games out there, far surpassing Thief in many ways. Being able to interrogate and then throw a guy off a moving vehicle is just WAY too much fun... LOL I'd keep gushing about it, but my initial post regarding SC (#29) should be enough! Heh. Can't wait for the fourth game in the Spring. Splinter Cell: Double Agent if I'm not mistaken. Way to go Ubisoft Montreal for making yet another original, stellar game. Gotta love that developer...
PS- Do you still need that mod for S^2? I never heard back from you in the original thread...

Starforce is an antipirating program although my understanding of it is it disables you from being able to burn backups of any games. And the kicker is you have to download an uninstaller to get rid of it.If your into burning CD'S and im talking even legit Backups of your games and Music it will disable you from doing so until you download the uninstaller to get it off your Harddrive.Alot of people were pissed about it when Beyond Divinity came out.

This kind of crap will only stop when someone (there must be some greedy lawyer out there who knows a little something about computers) finally files a class action suit against a company for putting software on your computer that disrupts the functionality of your pc/other software for anything that has nothing to do with their software. It should be made illegal, but consumer protection laws regarding software are notoriously lacking.

I personally haven't run into the more debilitating effects of Star Force, like your CD/DVD Drives disappearing altogether, but they've been known to happen. I did have Star Force installed on my system befire (with Beyond Divinity) but I didn't suffer any real ill effects. I was still able to burn stuff if I recall correctly, I don't know why but I was able to. So it wasn't all that bad other than having some weird background processes running... but let me tell you that is one of my MAJOR pet peeves.
If I have a system process that I know isn't supposed to be there, and I don't want it there, and worse I don't know what it's doing, I'm getting rid of it.
As for the S^2 mods, yes I still want them though it's no biggie if I don't get them right away. I've already finished the axis campagin and am playing through allies now. S^2 has a great game going in it but it suffers from some rather serious issues. All in all the core tactical gameplay engine is better than UFO or Jagged Alliance... no surprise as it melds the best of both worlds. It has UFO's complete destructibility and multi-levelled engine combined with the tactical options of Jagged Alliance.
Not everything made it through but the resulting engine, plus its own 3D Physics and effects (gotta love the ragdolls and how enemy bodies just go wild when you kill them!) is overall better than both JA2 and UFO.
What I don't like though is the camera view, which can be rather cumbersome, and I attribute some of this to the bad map design. Most maps are PUNY especially compared to Terror from the Deep, and many of them just don't have good views. Especially annoying is how high walls are in really small rooms, you can barely see anything unless you go top down.
The other major concern is turn length. The enemy takes forever to move and in the later maps with lots of enemies it can take forever to finish a turn.
There are other smaller concerns, nothing really breaking the game although I have to say this game has some of the most pathetic story-telling I've ever seen. On that note though the voice acting is so corny, it's fun! Reminds me of Star Ocean 2 with such bad voice acting that you could actually laugh at it, and in a good way.
Anyway, if you can post the mods somewhere just link me to it. We have trouble catching each other online so it may be tough to transfer it via IRC or what not.

The older versions of StarForce were benign, but the newer ones seem to be much more intrusive in to users' systems. I really hope this policy of throwing in secret copy-protection ware comes to a dead halt.

The funny thing about Star Force is, I am perfectly willing to buy an original copy of Chaos Theory -- in the same way I just picked up SWAT 4 and Rainbow Six ; both games I already have "previously acquired" -- but having Star Force onboard is completely deterring me from buying the game. I have no intention of supporting these software companies that deign to use such crap.

Yeah, I haven't been devoting a huge load of time to the game, but from the first two levels I have played, some of the stealth kills/surprises I have received remind me of the first days of ever laying my eyes on Thief.
There was this time (on the boat) where I thought all was quiet, turning the corner I startled and was startled by a gunman- holy CRAP!! Next thing I knew, I was planting a survival knife into his gut, and trying to stifle his death cries.
Oh, yeah, and then there was this time when I was in a squat, watching this guy approach me, in the pitch black and I really had no clue what I was gonna do. As he got closer, I hit my fire button (expecting a knock-out). Next thing I knew, I was hilt deep with my blade in his sternum, lifting him from the ground.
This is better than Thief, and probably one of the more violent games I have played. Simply violent because of what you can do to all your victims. Walk them up to a cliff after interrogating them? Yup. Throw them off and hear them scream all the way down? Damn straight! LOL
Holy crap I hope there's an SDK for this game. I'm gonna go check now. I certainly know the online community it hot.

Well, there IS an SDK available, but I'm still yet uncertain whether or not it's robust enough to make single player AND multiplayer maps. I suspect just MP ATM.

Actually i believe it does have blood but its a smokey type red mist.Plus i can forgive that when the terraine is unbelievably expansive.Maybe i was to harsh i will continue playing it but it would have been alot cooler with special gore effects.I wish i could figure out how to just throw someone off a cliff though without having to stab him first.I want to hear them scream to there death plunge would make up for not having the blood lol.

LOL Well, geysers of blood issuing forth from a sawed neck is hardly condusive to game sales to say the least, especially considering the realistic nature of the game. However, I would be interested in a mod now that you mention it. It would be nice to have pools of blood to be concerned about after offing an enemy. It would make you think twice about where you "capped" someone first and foremost. Hmmm, should I shoot someone here, Air Ring them there, take them hostage into a dark corner, and then choke them out, or maybe instead slit their throat?
Seriously, grabbing someone in a strangle-hold, using them as a human shield, while shooting their friend in the head (unbeknownst to either of them- and it'll happen in a split second with practice), is seriously Mature, any way you slice it. Blood or no. To further the maturity, you'll have the option to interrogate the hostage with threats of death, which is like, wow, a nice touch. You don't see that too often in gaming. Blood and gore is rampant, but serious moral decisions, are few and far between.
Again though, I'm sure the devs thought about this; they still have an "M" rated game, I'm sure they don't want to drop it into "AO"... I'm satisfied with a Mature rating. Any wilder, you risk ostracizing the franchise into oblivion. Don't forget, this game received its' rating due to morality, not language issues, big difference if you ask me. It never even really crossed my mind that there was any LACK of blood, until you mentioned it funny enough. Not a huge deal, though. Maybe in SCIV we'll see some progression along this avenue. As is, the franchise has reached perfection in my opinion, and surpasses Thief in every way.
To find out how to perform the throws, watch the Training Vids- "Cool Moves" section. Damn, watch them all to see advanced moves in general.

Tenchu did just fine! :)
Anyway with SbS ranting about Splinter cell now I can no longer rightly argue on the SyS Wars board that only console players love Splinter Cell over Thief. :)
I am one of the few that always enjoyed Sam more. I dunno why but I must be the only pc gamer that never got sucked into the Thief world. I am sorry to say I also never got into System Shock 2....I know I am now banned from here forever !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, until you play Chaos Theory, you'll never rightly know, now will you? Oh yeah, Starforce... Go figure, an ethical pirate... LOL Up until Chaos Theory, Garret wasn't dethroned. Chaos Theory easily dislodges Thief any day. I have found no instances of Starforce on my computer BTW.
