Okay, I *finally* got my hands on this but lo and behold, when I try to play it I find that there is no way for me to set the resolution to 1280x1024! Does anyone have a fix for this? The highest it goes is 1150-something. This was the same issue I had with FEAR, which is funny because on Radeons I had the option to go to 1280x960 at least; on NVidia it only went as far as 11xx. I am thinking I have the same issue here with Silent Storm.

From the quick tips I could find, only S^3 offers better resolutions. Anyways, the game is decent regardless.

Aw man, that sucks. I already pored through the configuration files to see if I could manually set it but no dice. At least I managed to change the camera angles, the default angle limits were too restrictive. Anyway I *really* needed a game like this to break up the monotony of FPS games I've been going through.

It's not quite UFO and not quite Jagged Alliance (there are some missing qualities) but the core tactical engine gameplay is great, if the camera view is somewhat lacking.

It's a turn-based tactical strategy game set in the second world war. You control a team of special ops soldiers with different skills and abilities, chosen from an RPG-like skill tree, and go on various missions either as Allies or Axis.

Like Mochan says, the core gameplay is most similar to something like Jagged Alliance 2 (which was itself a bit like the first X-COM/UFO). Each turn your guys get a number of action points (based on their stats and skills) with which to move, fire, heal a buddy, operate equipment, plant explosives, etc. You can also save some of these APs up to let off a reaction fire shot in the enemy round which can be a lifesaver.

It's well worth a look, especially since you can count on the fingers of, er, one finger the number of games like this made in the last few years.

By the way, there's one thing I haven't quite figured out. How do you use the Snipe firing setting? If you put it in Snipe Mode, does it automatically carry over the AP to the next turn and this is used automatically when you do Careful Shot next round?

I also found that if I left people in the roster instead of adding them to my party, they auto-level on their own and their stats are much better. Putting them in your party means their stats only increase if you use them and usually it isn't quite as much as when they auto-level. What's up with that?

Don't know, really never cared. I found a group I was comfortable with, and stuck with it. I suppose if you play on insane difficulty with headshots and whatnot (and they happen quite often), you're gonna want replacements, fast, and not some newbie either. They may auto-level quickly, but they'll most likely have a skill set you can't use that will fit your playstyle. That's a huge drawback if you ask me.

Re: Sniping, yup that's what you do, to carry across the AP to the next round, however, it doesn't do it automatically (you need to select the carry-over command). I found it didn't really become effective until you hit the higher levels (12+) though, especially for non-sniper vocations.

You should also use the two Mods that increase spotting and firing range, as well as forcing the AI to use grenades. You get a MUCH better play experience, overall.

Yeah, it's a pretty big bug which, as far as I'm aware, was never fixed.

Ok, firing and spotting range should be longer, I'm definitely using that. Grenades should be used, I get a kick whenever I kill an enemy and a ton of grenades go splashing all over the map. They should put them to good use.

The auto-level thing isn't really an issue, I just found it funny (and a bit miffing) that the peeps in the roster were tougher than my characters.

Say SBS, could you help me out with the mods? I cant' seem to find a good place to get S2 mods. I can't find the two mods you were referring to.

I may have to send them to you.... I snagged them ages ago. I need to head out of the house right now, but I'll post links and look for those mods when I get back.

Ah, that would be sweet. I'll just twiddle my thumbs here for a while. Thanks!

Okay, here's a link to Silent Storm HQ (http://www.strategycore.co.uk/s2hq/index.php?lng=en), while the mods can be found here: http://www.strategycore.co.uk/s2hq/download.php?lng=en However, there's no longer a link to the extended range mod. I have it though, so if you can't find something similar, just let me know and I'll email it to you.
