I have always heard that search engines penalize for incoming links from

unrelated websites. While I agree that you should create as many links to

your site from related websites, but what is the harm if you receive links

from unrelated websites?

Thanks

I think the penalization, if there is any, would be negligable. The most important aspect to search engine optimization is, and always has been, what readable content your website contains and how closely it matches the kind of search you would want your site to show up on in a search engine.

I.E. if you have a site about peanut butter, and you want your website to show up in the top 10 searches when people type in "peanut butter", well then you have to have a lot of peanut butter related readable txt in the index page of your site, but no spam. If you spam the text "peanut butter", without any relevant peanut butter content on your site, then you will surely be penalized and possibly blacklisted from the search engines. Which is bad.
