I'm actually considering doing this. It'd make all the games I consider a pain to play (Medievil) so much easier in comparison.

Main problems I see with that arrangement are it blocks your access to the d-pad, which is better for some games.

Other problem is that even if it's more comfortable, the underlying mechanism still slides rather than rotates on a ball, which is the main reason for me why the nub sucks, not because it's uncomfortable.

For some reason I don't really have to much trouble with the "Nub" but I have yet to play Medieval still.

How exactly do you switch it up anyway?
