View Full Version : FarCry: BOAT
Mission: the Boat, objective: shut down the jamming signal.
This has been the first real challenge for me in FarCry. After planting the C4 on the frieghter, Ive tried several locations/defences for taking out Crow in his chopper. No luck from defending aboard the freighter. My best effort has come from swimming to a near by island & taking cover behind a small palm tree . Whats unexpected is the amount of [apparent] armor Crow has. Ive nailed him w/8 direct rocket hits, hundreds of rounds of ammo & he just wont die.
This one will be satisfying when beaten!
Anyone beat this on Veteran or Realistic setting?

I played on Veteran I think. That mission gave me no real problems. I reloaded once becuase I stayed on the boat first time around and it sunk, and I was a sitting duck in the water. Next tiem around I jumped ship, swam to that little island to the south, and dodged behind the palm trees while hitting him with rockets. He went down easily enough.
The part in the game that gave me fits was the final stage with the special forces in the corridor. I couldn't get through that part at all.
Yep, the best way to beat him is to jump overboard and swim for the little island. The palm tree gives you sufficient coverage so he won't hit you unless you're careless. Then just keep firing rockets at the chopper until it takes damage and flys away.
Ah, that corridor battle at the end was tough. Just run in and start firing rockets toward the back, and any other explosives you have to thin them out. Use the pillars for cover and pick off the ones advancing towards you. When one of them lobs a grenade your way or there's a rocket incoming, run to the other side of the room quick. Took me several tries.
My experience of downing Crow has been far more challenging than yours[choosing the island path]. Why?
The 25 second timer does not allow enough time to escape the blast radius, as a result ALL armor is lost and 75% of health is GONE when freighter explodes. It has been impossible to reach the island with any viable hit points remaining after jumping overboard "post explosion". So I tried going to the front of freighter till it exploded; which indeed did leave my armor & health intact....problem with that route is its too damn far in distance to make it to the island before Crow arrives.
Perhaps somehow you guys retained your armor & health after jumping overboard? That would make a big difference. At this point, all it takes is 1-2 shots from Crow & its reload time. I'd like to confirm that all armor & majority of health is lost when you jump overboard "post explosion".[it would take but a few minutes to load this file & confirm].
Thanks
As SOON as the sequence begins, just grab the rocket launcher and jump off the back of the boat. Swim like hell, and you should reach the island with only moderate damage from the explosion - plenty enough to take out Crow, who shouldn't get many hits on you if you stay behind the palm tree. Even with low health you should be able to do it - he can't hit you if you stay covered. If you stay on the boat during the explosion, then you have to fight Crow from the boat (he'll kill you before you reach the island). Then it's harder because you have to drive off his 'copter before the boat sinks.
Thanks for that, its what Ive been doing. The results are the same though: 100% armor lost, 75% health lost.......maybe a bug for my game, who knows. The fact that Crow can survive 8 direct rocket hits [plus 4 to chopper] tells me Im experiencing something different from you guys. Other gamers have told me that the've taken Crow out with a little as 4 rockets. One things for sure, Im getting to know the map well. I'll get it done, but its not the "easily enough" thing mentioned.
I think I can do it w/o any armor but I will need at least 50% health in order to take a couple rounds from Crow. Ive stashed a second rocket launcher [already had one w/13 rounds] near island giving me a total of 27 rockets along with two 4WD's for back up firepower...that should bring him down.
Its been years since any shooter gave me fits like this.....think it was MOHAA stroming the beach of Normandy last time :D

I usually never enable "Cheats" in my games, but in farcry I have had to. I just get stuck with next to zero ammo, low health and 2-3 big trygens with rockets coming at me with no cover. Although I have only enabled cheats once or twice just to get out of tight spots and then disable them when resuming the game. The Boat scene has me stuck too, I cannot kill Crow fast enough without drowning by the boat sinking. I am going to have to try the island/palm tree tactic I guess. I doubt I'll ever need to cheat for this boss though.

I think I had it whipped, but got called back to work & with no saves, well you know [restart, lol] Try this for fun:
Load the previous save point after you blow the final [third] communications tower. Then head to the ridge via 4WD on the SouthEast side of the freighter [run over or gun down the 2 troops on road]. Hop out & snipe the three guards on freighter. This will allow you to crawl down the cliff side with the 4WD & stash it on the island below. This is where you will take cover after jumping ship. I did this with two 4WD's for extra firepower. Now return to boat & follow scripted events, except jump over south side of freighter & head to island. I had plenty of time to mount one of the 4WD guns & target Crow from a distance....the damage I did was apparent with much blood spatter for confirmation.
It may be different for you, but I had to head for cover as I had next to zero health, which I saved for dumping rockets on Crow. Otherwise if your quick & healthy, you can stay in the 4WD's & empty all 500 rounds on him. [let me know what health & armor you may have AFTER you jump ship & it explodes, you WILL loose some health/armor].
You don't actually shoot Crow down - you hit him enough and he flys off. It really doesn't take a whole lot to do it. Just use your rocket launcher until you run out, and then just target Crow himself with one of your guns. If you're good at using the palm tree for cover, Crow won't hit you once.
Ok, ok...it seems simple enough in retrospect. Better yet, I found the answer to why I was loosing so much health post ship jumping & explosion......I was getting nailed by flying debris from freighter, lol. [no damage feedback under water !]
Another mistake I made: I was taking cover behind the center palm, which Crow would circle 360 degrees.
For some reason when I positioned myself behind the first skinny palm, Crow would stay on the outer 180 degree radius making it MUCH easier to defend my position & MUCH easier to take him out. To prove this, I reloaded twice & ran him off with 4 rocket hits each time. My lesson for success on this mission is [1]WHICH palm to hide behind & [2] watch for falling debris.
Cool, now on to the Catacombs.
[Btw, I gotta say FarCry has some of the best maps a shooter could have. What pure gaming fun its been]
The best is still to come . There's a huge outdoor night mission where all hell breaks loose. I should replay it.

Ok, it took only 2 times to beat Crow, the first time I lost but I went to the small island directly behind the tanker (With the Wrecked Ship). The Second time I detonated the bomb and jumped off the right side and swam like a freak to that other little island, only 1/3 of my armour was taken from the blast. I fired 6 rockets (I think) at him and just smoked him...and he flew off.
The next level is tricky, I think the AI has ramped up a bit here!
Sounds like you had better luck than I did as I lost all my armor & majority of health.
What dissapointed me about the ending of this mission was that CryTek limited the proximity of showdown with Crow.....did anyone notice that your patrol boat [if used] would mysteriously cook after you aquired explosive pack & any & all other remaining watercraft on map would dissapear? The use of a patrol boat would have offered several alternate escape plans [I had one set up that included patrol boat>4WD>Quonset hut for cover]. I went so far as to time it out & make sure after C4 was set I had ample time to reach cover.
Regarding the next mission : CATACOMBS, my experience was AI was about on par w/previous levels, with exception to the close proximity of those contacted inside catacombs.
Also, there were just palin more of 'em to deal with, & little resources to recover on, lol.
I think Catacombs has been my least enjoyed jaunt in FarCry thus far. Im holding on for the mission AKU spoke of earlier: "There's a huge outdoor night mission where all hell breaks loose"....now that sounds like fun!

I am attempting to snipe my way along and hiding in the tall grass etc. But no matter how many soldiers I shoot down I get bullets from different directions. I don't like the fact that they can find me so easy either, even the grunts from far away will ping me off while I am hiding. Takes away from the whole experiance.

I say lure them to their death Jupiter_X.
I have stayed alive with ease & saved considerable ammo throughout first 14 levels of FarCry by exploiting the blind side of AI [and their ability to "ping me"]. It seems the AI has a much harder time targetting me, especially up close, when I am prone behind cover.
I have been able to repeatedly sneak up on groups of multiple baddies in the prone position & gun them all down taking little damage [except for Trigens]. Lying prone works very well for me, even with minimal cover [a simple tree trunk works].
A good example would be this CATACOMB mission. You may recall in the begining you approach a narrow passage that overlooks the valley below [this will be your first contact with troops below]. The passage forms a great choke point to defend from in the prone position. I simply targeted the closest troop I could find, fired one shot to get their attention & retreated to choke point going prone about 5 meters behind the tree on the right. Patiently waiting, I was able to take out the first 6 units with about 6 rounds each from an assault rifle. The "turtle" route is not for everyone, it can get boring sure enough.
Every now & then when my inventories are loaded I will do a flat out run 'n gun assault for the fun of it, but FarCry usually makes me pay for that!

Ha, I usually never play FC like this unless I get bombarded by too many soldiers...still I get smoked. Like I said before, I am not one to cheat on games but I did bump up my Sniper gun ammo to 999...so I can quietly pic off those #$%&#@...and it is still one tough game.

It took me about 15 trys before i got the hang of the rocket luncher.. but when i did i took Crow down easy enough on Realistic!!! I found cower behind the mast on the boat and launched missiles when I spotted crow's chopper on either side of the mast. (same way as u found cower behind the palm). The only problem is that u don't got much time before the ship sinks, but if i was to try now I would make it in at least 5 trys.
The only down side is that after Crows chopper goes down and the mission ends, the my computer jumps out of the game while loading for the next mission...( Because of this I have had to take crows chopper down several of times)
Anyone know what I can do to stop this Error?? Im going insane, and I am really tierd of shooting down Crows chopper!!!
Thx for any response.
I too tried the position behind ships mast, but just couldnt get it done from that location.
Re: "error", cant help, never heard of it happening.

Alternatly to all the above you can hide on the island and empty mag after mag into the helicopter! You don't even need to hit Crow!
