the best platform? XBox, PS2, GameCube, Nintendo 64??? I'm thinking about buying a system and I primarily like the Sporting Games , i.e., Golf, Football, Baseball. Thanks!

That really depends on a number of factors. I prefer the XBOX for sports games but thats just a personal preference.
Let me break it down for ya -
XBOX - quickest load times, best framerates, strongest online multiplayer for sports games, most titles are available although the PS2 probably has a few more sports game choices.
Gamecube - great controller (wavebird), not as many sports titles as the XBOX and PS2 but has some fun, quirky titles; Mario Tennis, Mario Golf, Mario Baseball (great for easy pick up and play but best suited for the non-simulation sports gamer). Cube has no online sports titles however. Graphics aren't as good as XBOX but slightly better than the PS2.
PS2 - online titles for free (XBOX requires an extra $50 for an annual subscription to the online service), most sports titles to choose from, load times longer than both XBOX and Gamecube but not by much.
As you can see, each system has its benefits so its really up to you and what you're looking for. Do you have certain games or game types in mind? That may better help me direct you to one specific choice.
I didn't comment on the N64 since its moons behind the other three in sports game choices when considering graphics, capabilities, content, etc.... If you're looking to go the cheapest route (like N64), I'd recommend the Dreamcast before N64 although your best bet is to jump in on one of the first three.
Good luck!!

I was just going to say, "get a PS2 or Xbox, you can't go wrong", but that's because I personally, automatically, discount those Nintendo sports games (I am so effin sick of Mario!) and assumed that you were talking "Madden"... but Five is right, we're probably going to need to know what type of sports games you like to play. Arcade sports - like NFL Blitz and the aforementioned Mario Golf; or sports simulations - like the 2K5 series of games, the Winning Eleven series, Virtua Tennis... ?
I actually prefer those simpler sports games over the more simulation-type ones - generally speaking (Tecmo Bowl, Super Punch-Out, Track-n-Field, and Ice Hockey are still among my all-time favorites) - yet still find the Xbox to be the best platform for sports games. I will personally vouch for: Links 2004 (golf sim), NHL Hitz 20-02 (arcadey), Outlaw Volleyball, (arcadey), ESPN NFL 2K5 (sim), Top Spin (tennis sim), and NBA Street Vol.2 (arcadey).
I will give the PS2 credit for the Hot Shots Golf games (arcadey) tho'.
But in addition to the games, I also love the Xbox's controller (best evar!), I like the fact that it has four controller ports built-in, and I love the harddrive - which means that you don't have to buy or fuss with memory cards.

My platform of choice is the Gamecube. I pick up NBA Live each year for the new rosters and rookies and everything. But I primarily am into other types of games as well.
So for you I would recommend going with the PS2. There are more sports titles to choose from on the PS2 and you can play online with the sports games you get for free.
Check out Tiger Woods PGA golf and Madden Football for games.
