This is an interview with the bassist from Death Cab For Cutie. This thread might not go anywhere, but my idea for it is for you guys to post any pro, neg, or neutral statements by musicians about games or game systems. I've seen lots of musicians and celebrities mention things about gaming (I recall an interview with Mike Patton mentioning he preferred the Dreamcast to Ps2, but that was a long time ago. Patton, btw, is rumored to be working on Rockstar's Bully soundtrack.)
Anyway, the Death Cab gaming thing; they mostly game on Ps2 on the tour bus and though there wasn't an overt dis, of all the gaming, the only thing said about xbox or its games was that they used to have an Xbox. I wished the interviewer had followed up with why they preferred Ps2 to Xbox, though Harmer did mention playing Rez. Other gaming mentioned was Nintendogs on DS, 8-bit Zelda, PsP (no titles mentioned) and GBA.

Interesting thread!
Being a musician myself I've always liked gaming since its so similar to playing an instrument (especially guitar) since you have to coordinate button pressing using hand/eye coordination which is exactly what I do when playing guitar (except instead of pressing buttons I'm pressing strings/frets). In addition, the whole memorizing combos and moves is akin to learning scales or songs.
Plus, it keeps my hands agile and fast which again contributes to better guitar playing.
Lots of musicians play games for similar reasons. I actually read an article in a guitar mag at one point that had many musicians say pretty much the same thing.

Well, I am not really a musician, but I have always had an interest in creating music. I have used and currently use Fruity Loops and Sound forge to create Industrial/Techno, with a bit of an edge (Heavy Guitar) something like Frontline Assembly. I originally re-mixed a Metallica riff from "Through the Never and added my own breakbeats and freaky sounds to the mix...sounded pretty good. Now I am attempting to chord out my own guitar talent and see how it turns out.
I have already put out one CD, released 2 years ago this month. I am currently workin on my next 2 projects. My problem is game addiction and work...they just get in the way!!!

I used to be into music in highschool but I turned my back on it, since time was tight I had to let music go and concentrate on gaming and writing. Now, I have let writing go as well and am focusing on gaming. Gaming (and anime) just kills all other hobbies!

Music and games go together beautifully. Do you think musicians in general are more drawn to music-heavy games, or rhythm games? You guys ever play any of that type of stuff? There's a DS music game called Ouendan I've considered importing; it doesn't just have you hit buttons in rhythym like some of the games, but uses the touch interface in combination with rhythm and sound to do a number of things that sound really challenging; plus I'd just love to hear the music.
Speaking of remixing and stuff, that's what I loved so much about Amplitude; it's a rail-shooter where your shooting/targetting is done rhythmically to create live remixes. It really chaps me that I can't find Rez or Gitaroo Man.

This is how you play Rez:

I forgot about the Rez sexual stimulation attachment. That's just too awesome.

Nah, I never really cross the two hobbies. I've played Frequency, Amplitude, and MTV Music Generator and had fun with each, but I don't really look at them as music games per se.
Whenever stimulated musically by any of those titles I'd usually gravitate towards my guitar and end up putting the game down in order to play some "real" music (no offense intended towards musicians using computers to make music).

Oh great---now Death Cab is referred to as "indie heartthrobs". That damned OC!!!! Oh well, I am proud to say that I have loved their music since the beginning, and also that the new album is dark, disturbing, beautifully melodic, and really really far from teeny-bopper. As for Harmer---Plans is his best effort yet. His bass lines are totally cool on that album.
Btw---when did he say that he preferred PS2 to Xbox?

He said they mostly played a Ps2 on the tour bus and that they used to have an Xbox. He didn't say why they didn't still have an Xbox. I was mostly just fishing for a Sys Wars angle there, though I have seen musicians overtly express favor or disfavor regarding game systems.
