I base this on the fact that Sony's PsP is getting its ass handed to it by the DS in Japan. A far superior device getting whipped by inferior tech ( comparitivly speaking ) with a new control interface. Kinda sounds like the Ps3 and the Revolution, doesn't it? Japanese gamers have shown with their wallets their ready for new innovative ways to play games.
The PsP just introduced a white version of the handheld along with the launch of a portable Winning Eleven Soccer, which is freaking huge over there. The DS still managed to outsell the PsP in weekly figures.
Also, the GBA micro launched selling almost 150,000 unites in a week. So can you tell me being able to download the entire Nintendo catolog on the Revolution won't be HUGE! If Japanese players will buy three different version of the GBA, do you really believe they wont be loving downloading old Nintendo games they probably owned at one time in thier life? Add that to the innovative control scheme ( ala DS ), Animal Crossing on-line, and Super Smash Bro's. online... I really think Nintendo has a chance to topple Sony in Japan. And I didn't even mention a possible Mario game at launch demostrating the controller like Mario 64 did.
To be fair, the PsP libary is pretty weak, and the Ps3 already has some big guns in the wings with MGS4 and DMC 4. We have no idea the power capabilities of the REVolution, or price structures. Also, it's hard, if not immposible, to forcast the Japanese market. I'm just saying, it's going to get very nasty after next years E3 and TGS.
