View Full Version : Peter Moore responds to Sony at TGS: "a sign of weakness"

Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima has pinned his colours firmly to Sony's mast in the next generation console battle, with a hugely impressive trailer for Metal Gear Solid 4 on PS3 being presented at the Tokyo Game Show.

In typical tongue in cheek style, the Konami development star included a number of references to other games and platforms throughout the video, which was played at a large specially-constructed PS3 cinema on Sony's stand.

Drawing most raised eyebrows, however, was a comment from Solid Snake's geeky companion Otacon, a fixture of the series, who sends a robot to find the grizzled veteran and proudly announces that the 'bot is powered by the Cell Processor.

"Is it really necessary to bring it to the battlefield?" Snake asks in the trailer. "You're looking at the key to winning the console war," responds Otacon, while clips of the Rubber Duck and Killzone demos from E3 play on screen.

While the comment is certainly not representative of Konami's overall attitude - the company has committed to developing Winning Eleven / Pro Evolution Soccer for the Xbox 360 platform, and more titles may well follow - it certainly suggests that Kojima Productions has chosen to focus on the new Sony console.

However, it can hardly be described as a major blow to Microsoft to have the Metal Gear franchise leading out on the Sony platforms - given that it's always been seen as a PlayStation franchise anyway.

Xbox VP Peter Moore certainly doesn't seem perturbed by the MGS4 video - telling GamesIndustry.biz at TGS that "Cell processor or not, when I look at the technical specs, I don't see anything that concerns me overly from a performance point of view. Quite frankly, having the ability to move first in this space, I think, provides us with the opportunity for a huge advantage."

"If we look at the capabilities of the Xbox 360 from a technical aspect, and we lay against it the capabilities from a technical aspect of the PS3, everybody that works at a technical level that I respect says... It's a wash," he continued. "It really is. Both companies have incredibly powerful machines, and it will be about what the developers can do with them."

"Gamers are a very smart bunch, and gamers who still haven't seen a PS3 or seen one played, will make the determination. The English expression is, the proof of the pudding is in the tasting. Having videos, having characters in videos... The fact that they feel the need to have Snake tell you that it's powerful, that could be seen as a sign of worry, or weakness, potentially," Moore concluded.

Whatever

This guy is a complete F-ing Retard! He knows that trailer was damn impressive.
I remember all the hype M$ was dishing out when they were getting MGS 2 ported to the Xbox....funnier still they never got MGS 3 either! What a freakin' joke.

PS3 will trounce 360...end of story!

Performance may indeed be a wash or close to a wash, and it's the developers who will make the diff.

That said, looks like the PS3 devs are making the difference, so far from launch we have real time renders like this while the 360 has.... Madden 360? and it launches in two months.

You guys are dreaming. Not that the PS3 might do well, that could easily happen. But to base that on Konami and Metal Gear is a fallacy. First of all, like the man said, Metal Gear developers have been no friend to the XBOX platform. Indeed, a superior port tanked on XBOX and was in the bargain bin before XMAS, thanks to a superior spy game Splinter Cell.

Now, I guess, Metal Gear is supposed to be the best Sony action on the system. It did relatively little, Metal Gear 3 on PS2, compared to Halo on XBOX. I don't think Metal Gear is gonna do anything for PS3, that Halo3 isn't going to do for 360. Also, Halo3 will be launching side by side the motion picture Halo.

Plus, this is a demo, big deal. Both systems are going to have great games and you would expect Metal Gear to be one of them, I mean it would be a major embarrassment if it wasn't. That is like MS producing a little marketing clip of Master Chief saying, hey look at me my game is gonna be great. Well, no shyat! It better be.

I don't see what the big deal is, Metal Gear has been weak this past generation and in truth, Konami needs PS3 to turn the franchise around. At this point, only Metal Gear fan boys are getting whipped into a frenzy about a demo. Let's see some game footage before XMAS 2006. More great Sony marketing.

Peter Moore's been drunkenly lurching from one tragedy to another ever since he took over as head of Sega's U.S division back in the day. This is the same man that brought us such delectable quotes like, 'X360 is the zen of gaming,' and the whole biking/running (I forget) analogy. So, is it any wonder that he'd bring up yet another stupid sounding excuse.

John Carmack (Doom) and Dave Jaffe (God of War) sound off on the next gen consoles in the latest Game Informer. Carmack said he actually prefers the 360 development kit, and he said MS made a better choice of processor technology. He prefers the 360 over PS3, but not by as wide a margin as he did Xbox over PS2.

Jaffe was much more forthcoming. He said, "... for Microsoft to say there's no difference is as stupid as Sony trying to say there's no difference between PS2 and Xbox. Is there any difference from a standpoint of, ultimately, it doesn't really matter? It's about who has the best games and who has the most fun experience. I still think that's going to be Sony. But, if you actually look at it from a technical standpoint, I think you're kind of smoking crack if you think that the Xbox 360 is totally equivalent to the PS3. That's just PR spin, and they know it, and your readings should know it too."

It's probably easy for Carmack to say he prefers the 360 processor, because it is a lot closer to the processor technology he's been working with for the past ten years. The Cell must seem extremely alien to him.

The 360's architecture will also be more similar to the dualcore/multicore setups which will appear on the PC in the years to come. The Cell's PPE/SPE setup will be totally out there in comparison.

I've always predicted that the Cell has more actual power and what we've seen from the tech demos/trailers pretty much confirms this. Well I'm not passing judgement yet, there's more fight left to be fought.

Uhm who to believe Carmack a vertifiable gaming god and multi platform developer. Or buy the lead of a Sony owned developer?

HMMMMM tough one any advice?

Strictly speaking, I've mentioned before that the 360 is probably more forward-thinking than the PS3 in terms of its processor. I forget in which thread I mentioned this. This is in light of tomorrow's PCs having architecture similar to how the 360's processor is set up.

I'm inclined to believe that the 360 is easier to develop for than the PS3, and that worse comes to worst devs will at least be able to use just one core the same way they've been doing games for single core machines for the past two decades or so.

The Cell is just such a new kid on the block that it's hard to set expectations for it.

Great post T Tashi. Its nice to see someone unbiased and looking at all possibilities.

By the way - Jaffe is employed by Sony's Santa Monica studios so he'd be a moron to say anything different. He wouldn't be employed there much longer if he publicly announced that the 360 is stronger/better than the PS3.

Well... I'm definitely biased. :) I just have no reason to lie or be deceptive. I could've just posted Jaffe's comments (the crack comment was funny) but I thought it was relevant to post both. Anyway, there's no way to know if Carmack's comment is completely unbiased.

How do you like Evil Dead? Reviewers crapped all over the last Evil Dead game, but I liked it, especially when Ash gets the Confederate and Union armies to team up. That was just classic. So I was wondering how this one compared to the last.

I'm only slightly into it but are really enjoying ED up to this point. Bruce did all the voice work along w/Ted Raimi and its top notch!! Funny stuff.

The gameplay is a little weak but much, much better than the last one IMO. I'd only recommend it to fans of the series but to those who love ED - this is a must buy.

Nice avatar BTW

Cool! I'll definitely get it 'cause I'm a big fan of the movies, mainly the first one. On the dvd you can see the square where they pasted the moon in. I'm gonna go ahead and get Indigo Prophecy when it hits in the next day or so also. I've read too many good things about it.

Nice avatar BTW
Thanks!

Anyway, there's no way to know if Carmack's comment is completely unbiased.

I see no reason for Carmack to be biased. I think he honestly thinks the 360 is better.

I still have old Dreamcast magazines with many interviews with Moore when he was with Sega. He didn't used to spew off at other developers, and he certainly didn't show the sarcasm that he shows now. So, you have to wonder. Is this just MS yanking his strings? Choreographing the puppet show, perhaps?
