A lot more reviews have come in--this is one of the highest scoring games on any system that I've seen in awhile.

GamePro 11/1/2005 4.5 out of 5 90.0%
Nintendo Power 11/1/2005 9 out of 10 90.0%
Games are Fun 9/17/2005 10 out of 10 100.0%
Planet Gamecube 9/18/2005 9.5 out of 10 95.0%
Play Magazine 10/1/2005 9.5 out of 10 95.0%
MobileTechReview 9/1/2005 4.75 out of 5 95.0%

The Mobile Tech review is especially glowing: While (the three GBA games) have been enough to keep the series alive and kicking, they've never been able to reach the same level of originality or excitement of the last truly great 2D release, Symphony of the Night for the Playstation. With the release of Dawn of Sorrow, Konami has managed to not only return the Castlevania series to its rightful place atop the Platform genre, but they've also managed to include some truly original and useful new features using the DS touch screen capabilities. The end result is one of the most enjoyable Castlevania titles ever created.

I defy anyone to tell me what the inherent gameplay mechanics are in Castlevania that are fundamentally different then in any 2D Metroid game. For all intents and purposes, they are essentially the same game, except one is sci-fi and one is goth horror.

That said, based on these reviews, I'm probably going to have get this game, since I love 2D Metroid games. ;)

Well, they call it Metroidvania for a reason. I'm no castlevania expert, not even a fan, but what seems really the same is the exploration structure; it's 2-d but not side-scrolling. What seems different is atmosphere, music, look, weapons, rpg aspects, collecting souls and abilities with which to defeat bosses; and in the DS version, huge verticle bosses and the need to bind them with drawn spells.

For having a similar type of world design, they're pretty damned different.

yes they are and the main castlevania guy even admits that metroid strongly influenced the series.
