And down at the bottom, below the Hot News about the PS3, was the header "PSP: WTF?" which turned out to be the lead story.
They were not kind with their criticisms of the PSP, but for many of us who own one, they did, sadly, tell it like it is.
In fact, they slammed Sony pretty hard. To be truthful, mine has gotten very little use lately, and I cannot even eBay the thing, since they are selling so cheap there and my wife would kill me...
But man, look at all the movies you can get!!!

I went to gamespot today to pick up Medievil and yeah I was shocked at the amount and kinds of movies. At least Hollywood is on the UMD bandwagon.
And that's why I like PSM. Not because I agree with him, but because they seem like gamers and they have an honest assessment that's devoid of politics. And unlike reviews in EGM, that have been outright wrong or lies, I can always look at PSM's reviews and say, "yeah I can see that" even when I disagree with it.

Yeah, the majority of those came out in the first month, but so... who in the world has the ducketts to buy every game they want in one fell swoop - let alone have the time to play them all all-at-once?! Heck, 5 games a month is better than the GameCube does even.
Oh yeah, you wanna know how many games are available for the NDS - as of today? 34*.
Yep, 34; just one more than the PSP. Even tho' the NDS came out five-months before the PSP.

33 titles you listed; how many of those would you actually pay $50 for? Even the four or five I paid full price for, all but Mercury are well worn titles.
Compare that to the refreshing originality of Kirby and Meteos and Nintendogs. . . titles that also happened to only cost $29.
I'm not trying to join a Ds vs PsP thing, but seriously, the PsP. . . quantity aside, has a LONG ways to go still in the originality and quality department. It will. . .there's stuff on the way that looks cool, and some revivals of old RPG's.
I think the Movie thing is terrible; if the UMD's were $14 I might actually buy a few, but I'm seeing them run $24-$29 for movies you can get on DvD with tons of extra features and watch on big screen. . .that sell for $16-$19. I could see paying a premium above DvD for HD-DvD or Blue-Ray, but for a dinky stripped down UMD I can only watch on my little PsP? BLECH.

The gist of the criticism was not about a lack of games. Specifically, it was short battery life, long load times for many games, stuck pixels on the display, and way too delicate hardware for a handheld machine. As far as games go, their main complaint was that with so many PS1 titles that could be ported, Sony should get rocking and give developers incentive to port them. They even cited the fact that the GBA has done great with ports, and for that reason alone Sony should get a clue.
But the biggest criticism is that Sony has pimped the machine as a multimedia wonderbox, yet it's hard as hell to get your own video and music into the thing. They said that if it is indeed a multimedia device, then it should come with software similar to iTunes or Winamp, and be able to trump the hell out of other hardware, given the power and display capability of the machine.
They also said that using Sony media that is way more expensive than Secure Digital or Compact Flash formats, and only supplying a 32 meg card with the machine that is all but useless, sucks big time. Plus the strap and headphones are the wrong color, and the case is garbage.
And finally, they really slammed Sony tech support, citing terrible customer service.
And not only do UMDs need to be priced significantly less than a DVD of the same movie, the console itself is overpriced.
Don't blame me, I'm just the messenger...

The article has some valid points and some crap ones. For instance, complaining about the color of the wrist strap. I mean wtf is that? You have to be a hardcore fanboy or a hardcore hater to complain about that. And I actually like the softcase. But the valid points of the 8 they mentioned are:
multimedia use: The 2.0 update addresses some of these issues, but getting non-UMD movies on the psp requires jumping through a lot of hoops and the mp3 players could use more functionality.
UMD price: Considering you can't connect the psp to a video ins on a TV I feel that anything above $15 is just too much. Paying $20-$30 is a legitimate gripe.
The other complaints, price point, the delicacy of the screen, stuck pixels, lack of good games etc... I can see where they are coming from, but I thought they were whining a bit too much.
My SPECIFIC complaint is just that there is a lack of the kinds of games I like, namely the rpgs, and action adventure stuff. Let's look at racers
NFS
Midnight Club
Ridge Racer
Wipeout
Burnout
ATV
All good to great games. In fact it's a hell of a list for arcade racers. But that 6 racers in 6 months to one rpg. Fortunately Legend of Heroes and Popolocrois are dropping in Oct., and I'll be picking both of them up. I just picked up Medievil which is surprisingly good, considering the reviews that slam it.
Oh! one other thing the article mentioned. I've read that Sony does have kind of an unofficial policy about ports. I say bring 'em on. There's a ton of PS1 ports I would gladly pay for to play again in portable form.

like Suikoden 1 & 2 (http://psp.ign.com/articles/651/651407p1.html) on one UMD?
It might be a port, but they're 2 hard to find games in one easy to handle portable package.

Yeppers!! I saw that on magicbox and that's what I'm talking about. A friend of mine will absolutely lose his mind and it guarantees he'll buy a psp. Suikoden is his most favorite rpg series.

Star Ocean: The Second Story would be sweet. Both disks would fit on one UMD, and the original game doesn't even use the sticks. And, the strat guide would possible become available again, which would be nice since the original is pulling more than $50 on eBay.
