Are the original Final Fantasy games good? I tried playing through 3, which some said was really part 6, and it couldn't hold my interest. Maybe it was because I was also first playing through Chrono Trigger and Tales of Phantasia, which seemed like much better games.

6 is quite possibly at least in my opinion the best in the series, but I did start off the series playing on 4 though back in the snes days.

Many people hold 6 or 7 as the best in the series and IMO it's simply because these were the first or among the first JRPGs they played, though I would say FF7 at least has more clout in being the best of them. It was a fresh new experience and it held a special place in their hearts. I didn't get to play ToP -- I just downloaded the English patch on emulator a few years back, and I didn't really get into it; but that is probably since it's a little too dated for today's standards. Still the Tales series is always fun; my first Tales game was Destiny and it was a blast.

Personally, even not considering the very dated graphics, I didn't find FF6 special at all. You're right... the problem is that Chrono Trigger outshadows it in terms of goodness. At least this was the case with me. I played CT first then I went on to FF6, and I found it was vastly inferior.

FF6 has its problems; the story is all over the place and hopping from character to character a little too much, and there seemed to be a lot of "funny" scenes which were a little too bizzare to swallow (like Ultros) considering the story seemed a bit sophisticated.

CT on the other hand was genuinely fun and inventive; the story per se wasn't all that but the time travelling mechanic was great, and the game took advantage of it pretty good like how you had to leave the robot to help farm in the past then you could pick him back up in the future later on. The characters weren't bad either and were very well-developed and never seemed overly dramatic or psychotic cases like they were in FF6. Not to say gimmicks was all it had going for it; it felt really grand and nostalgic as well at times, especially the ending which is still one of the best endings I've ever seen for an RPG.
